Weaves of Ashes

Chapter 334: Chapter 329: Three Degrees

Location:Obsidian Academy → Lower Realm Settlement (Ashfall Village)

Date/Time:Early Emberwane, 9939 AZI

Realm:Lower Realm

The merchant’s son was showing his hand to anyone who’d look.

Jayde heard him before she saw him — the particular pitch of a sixteen-year-old boy performing injury for an audience, loud enough to carry across the Academy’s eastern corridor, where students filtered between morning lectures and the training yards. She was walking with Eden toward the clinic, Takara’s small weight warm on her shoulder, his large blue eyes tracking the corridor with the patient attention of a kitten who was not a kitten.

”—and the WHOLE thing cracked, right down the middle, and the flame came out sideways instead of up, and LOOK—”

The boy held up his right hand. Bandaged. Poorly — the wrapping was loose, the edges fraying, the work of someone who had learned first aid from watching rather than doing. Beneath the bandage, visible at the edges: reddened skin. A burn. Second degree, from the blistering pattern.

The students around him leaned in with the comfortable horror of people examining an injury that wasn’t theirs.

”Temple-Blessed Hearthstone Cooker,” the boy said. The capital letters were audible. ”My da bought it from the Temple supplier in Millhaven. ’Divinely Approved,’ the man said. ’Superior to those Academy contraptions.’ Lasted three days before it blew.”

[His wrapping is going to get infected.]

Reiko’s observation through the bond — dry, clinical, the assessment of a beast who had spent enough time around Eden’s healing work to develop opinions about wound care.

(I know.)

Eden had already changed direction. Not obviously — she didn’t break stride, didn’t draw attention. Just adjusted her path so that when the cluster of students shifted, she was beside the boy, and her hands were reaching for his bandage with the matter-of-fact authority of someone who treated injuries the way other people tied shoes.

”May I?”

The boy blinked. Looked at the small, dark-haired girl with blue eyes who had appeared at his elbow. ”You a healer?”

”I read a lot. Hold still.”

She unwrapped the bandage. The burn was worse than the wrapping suggested — blistered across the palm, the skin tight and shining where the formation containment had cracked and vented superheated essence directly onto flesh. Eden cleaned it with supplies from her belt pouch — always stocked, always ready, the habits of someone whose preparation exceeded her cover story — and rewrapped it in clean cloth with the kind of precise, layered technique that turned a bandage from a covering into treatment.

”Keep it dry. Change the wrapping tonight. The Academy clinic has burn salve — ask for the green-lidded jar. No cost.”

The boy stared at his hand. At the bandage that was suddenly professional. ”Thanks. You’re... really good at this.”

”I read a lot,” Eden said again. The same words. The same tone. Nothing remarkable about a talented village healer who happened to know exactly how to treat a thermal-essence burn.

Thermal-essence containment failure. The discharge pattern on that burn is consistent with a lateral formation breach — the containment geometry collapsed asymmetrically, venting through the weakest structural point rather than through the designed exhaust channels.

(Which means the containment geometry was wrong.)

Correct. The resonance architecture was improperly replicated. Predictable failure mode.

Jayde looked at the boy’s hand. At the burn that a sixteen-year-old was showing off like a war wound because he didn’t understand that the device his father had bought in good faith from a Temple supplier had been designed by someone who had copied the shape of a Hearthstone Cooker without understanding what made it work.

On her shoulder, Takara’s ears rotated forward. His gaze tracked Eden’s hands, then the cluster of students, then settled on a point above the corridor — the roofline where, if Jayde glanced up, she would see nothing. But Takara saw. The protect detail saw everything.

***

The reports came in clusters after that.

Three patients in the Academy clinic that week — all burned, all from Temple-manufactured devices purchased in Lower Realm settlements. A woman with blisters across both forearms from a healing salve dispenser that had released an uncontrolled essence burst when she’d opened the lid. A farmer with flash-burns on his face from a formation light that had detonated instead of dimming. The merchant’s son.

Eden treated them with the same quiet competence she brought to everything. No drama. No commentary on the devices that had caused the injuries. Just clean work, proper technique, the green-lidded burn salve that she’d formulated in the Pavilion workshop from a recipe that combined Doha herb-craft with principles that predated this world by a civilisation nobody here knew existed.

(Three in one week. And those are just the ones who made it to the Academy.)

The reported cases represent a fraction of the actual incidence. Most Lower Realm families cannot travel to the Academy for treatment. The true injury rate is likely an order of magnitude higher.

”How many did the Temple distribute?” Jayde asked Eden that evening. Clinic closed. The patients gone. The burn salve jar noticeably lower than it had been at the start of the week.

”I asked.” Eden was scrubbing instruments — the methodical, thorough cleaning that she performed after every patient, every time, with a consistency that went beyond habit into something that looked like ritual. ”The Temple supplier in Millhaven moved forty units of the cooker alone. Ashfall Village received thirty. The settlements along the Southern Trade Road — another sixty to seventy, spread across five or six communities.”

A hundred and forty cookers. At minimum. Each one carrying the same flawed containment geometry. Each one a formation array with rune angles three degrees off true — and in formation engineering, three degrees was the distance between a stable resonance structure and a pressure vessel with no exhaust port.

”We need to see them,” Jayde said. ”The ones that failed. The ones that haven’t failed yet.”

***

Ashfall Village sat two hours east of Obsidian City, in the kind of terrain that the Lower Realm produced the way weather produced rain — dry, rocky, scrubbed clean by winds that carried grit and the particular smell of soil that had given up trying to grow things.

Jayde and Eden walked. Reiko padded beside them — lion-sized, silver eyes scanning the road, mercury rune hidden beneath dark salve. Registered as a shadowbeast companion. Nothing unusual about an Academy student traveling with a contracted beast, especially on the frontier roads where the beast tides had been pushing wildlife into unpredictable patterns.

Takara rode Jayde’s shoulder. Three ribbons — pink on the left ear, blue on the right, gold around the neck — catching the Emberwane light. His white fur was warm against her neck, his attention on the road ahead carrying the particular weight of an intelligence that a casual observer would mistake for feline curiosity.

[Kazren says the road quality is an insult to the concept of infrastructure.]

(Kazren can take it up with the Lower Realm’s municipal budget.)

The soul-bonded sword’s displeasure radiated from the weapon space with the dry irritation of an ancient intelligence forced to experience bad roads through someone else’s feet. Jayde ignored it. Kazren would complain about road quality during an apocalypse.

Ashfall Village was small. Forty houses. A communal well. A temple shrine — white stone, gold-leafed, maintained with the careful attention that communities gave to the institution that controlled their children’s futures. Chickens in the dirt. A dog sleeping in a doorway. The particular quiet of a settlement that existed at the edge of the world’s attention and had learned to expect nothing from the centre except demands.

The woman’s name was Heshi. She met them at her door — calloused hands, patched clothing, the deep lines around her eyes that the Lower Realm carved into people who worked outdoors in bad soil under harsh sun. Her forearm was bandaged. Better than the merchant’s son — someone in the village had proper wrapping technique. But the burn beneath was worse.

”Come in,” Heshi said. Not warmly. Not coldly. With the particular neutrality of a woman who had already told her story to Temple administrators and had not enjoyed the experience.

The kitchen was small. Clean. The cooking surface held the blackened ruin of what had once been a Hearthstone Cooker — the Temple version, bearing the golden Temple seal stamped into the base casing. The seal was cracked where the containment failure had split it. The formation runes along the rim were visible — copied, Jayde could see immediately, from the Academy design. The SHAPE was right. The angles were not.

”Three days,” Heshi said. She stood at the counter with her arms crossed, the bandaged forearm held against her body. ”Worked fine for three days. Then I was making dinner for my children, and the whole thing — the flame came out sideways. Not from the top where it’s supposed to. From the SIDE. Hit my arm.”

Eden was already beside her. ”May I see?”

Heshi extended her arm. The burn was second-degree — deep blistering, the skin tight and shining, the edges angry with the early signs of infection that came from three days without proper treatment. Eden unwrapped, cleaned, applied the salve with hands that moved through the process the way water moved downhill.

”The Temple man said it was my fault,” Heshi said. Watching Eden work. ”Said I used too much flame-crystal. I used what the instructions said. Exactly what they said.”

”It wasn’t your fault,” Jayde said.

She was at the cooking surface. The ruined cooker in her hands — turning it, examining the formation array with the kind of focused attention that looked, from the outside, like a student studying an unfamiliar device. From the inside: the Federation tactical voice running failure analysis with the clinical precision of an engineering mind that had designed systems for a civilisation three technological epochs ahead of this one.

Formation failure analysis: surface rune geometry replicated at approximately ninety-seven percent accuracy. The three percent deviation concentrates in the containment ring’s harmonic junctions — the points where resonance stress is highest. The original design distributes load across seventeen micro-arrays in a graduated spiral pattern. This copy uses a uniform distribution. Under thermal load, the uniform pattern creates stress concentration at the junction points. Failure is inevitable. The only variable is time.

(Three degrees. Three degrees of error in the junction angles, and a woman nearly lost her arm making dinner for her children.)

”The containment formation is flawed,” Jayde said. She set the ruined cooker down. ”The design was copied from the Academy version, but the internal geometry is wrong. It’s not operator error. The device was built incorrectly.”

Heshi stared at her. ”The Temple man said—”

”The Temple man was wrong.”

Eden finished the bandage. Clean. Professional. The kind of work that would have the burn healing in days instead of weeks. ”Change it every evening. The salve needs replacing daily — I’ll leave you enough for a week. If the redness spreads past the bandage edge, come to the Academy clinic. No cost.”

”No cost,” Heshi repeated. The words sat in her kitchen like something foreign.

***

Outside, the village was gathered.

Not formally — the way frontier communities gathered, which was to say that people who happened to be near the well when the strangers arrived happened to stay near the well, and people who happened to be tending gardens along the main path happened to tend them more slowly, and by the time Jayde and Eden emerged from Heshi’s house, thirty people were coincidentally standing within earshot.

A man with weathered hands and a carpenter’s squint approached. ”You from the Academy?”

”We are.”

”My neighbor’s cooker cracked yesterday. Didn’t explode — just stopped working. Formation went dead. Three days, same as Heshi’s. He’s got four children. That cooker was going to save him two silver a week in fuel costs.”

Behind him, a woman: ”The salve dispenser I bought gave my daughter a rash when she opened it. Essence burst. Small one — nothing like Heshi’s burn. But my daughter is SEVEN.”

Another: ”My formation light lasted two days. TWO DAYS. The Academy ones in the marketplace last for months.”

The complaints accumulated. Quiet. Measured. The particular tone of people who had learned that anger was a luxury they couldn’t afford, so they expressed grievance in the careful, factual language of citizens who knew they wouldn’t be believed but wanted the record to show they’d tried.

Then Jayde heard it.

Two women at the well, voices low but not low enough to escape ears that had been trained to capture intelligence across battlefields in another life.

”Did you hear about Millhaven? Temple came for the Kindling Day selections last month. Six families hid their children in the old mine shafts.”

”Six families?”

”Six. And nobody told. The Temple assessors went door to door and every family said the same thing — children visiting relatives. Sick. Away. The assessors knew they were lying. Everyone knew they were lying. Nobody broke.”

A pause. The sound of water being drawn from the well.

”My sister’s girl is eight next Emberrise. Assessment age.”

”I know.”

”There are mine shafts south of here, too.”

Jayde’s hands didn’t tighten. Her expression didn’t change. On her shoulder, Takara’s ears had gone perfectly still — angled toward the well, toward the two women, toward the sound of a civilisation’s foundations cracking at the level where the poor lived, and the powerful didn’t look.

[The water smells like iron,] Reiko observed through the bond. He was lying beside the well, silver eyes half-closed, projecting the indolent disinterest of a beast companion napping in a village square. [And something else. The children’s fear is in the groundwater. They’ve been afraid for a long time here.]

***

The Temple administrators arrived an hour later.

Not healers. Not engineers. Administrators — two men in clean white robes with golden thread, carrying ledgers and replacement devices, and the particular expression of institutional representatives performing a function that they understood as service and that everyone else in the village understood as something else entirely.

Jayde watched from the edge of the village square. Eden beside her. Takara on her shoulder. Reiko at her feet. Four beings observing an institution interact with the people it was supposed to serve.

The lead administrator addressed the gathering with the practiced warmth of someone who had delivered this speech in dozens of settlements. ”The Temple of Light provides these sacred tools at great cost for the betterment of the Lower Realm. We understand that some users have experienced difficulties with the blessed instruments. The Temple takes these reports seriously and has provided replacement units at no additional charge.”

He held up a new cooker. Same golden seal. Same copied formation array. Same three-degree error in the junction angles that Jayde could see from fifteen feet away.

”However,” the administrator continued, ”the Temple’s assessment indicates that the reported malfunctions were caused by improper usage — specifically, the application of flame-crystal in excess of the recommended quantities. The Temple’s quality assurance process is rigorous and comprehensive. These instruments are blessed and certified.”

The replacement unit contains the identical structural flaw. The failure mode is unchanged. Distributing replacements with the same defect guarantees repeat injuries.

(They’re handing out the same bomb with a new fuse.)

”In order to receive a replacement unit, the Temple asks that affected families complete a brief acknowledgment form.” The administrator’s assistant began distributing papers. ”The form confirms that the original malfunction was the result of operator error, and that the family accepts the replacement unit with the understanding that proper usage guidelines will be followed.”

Jayde read the form over a villager’s shoulder. The language was clean. Professional. The legal architecture of a document designed to accomplish one thing: transfer responsibility from the institution that built a defective device to the family that got burned by it. Sign here, and the Temple owes you nothing. Don’t sign, and the replacement goes back in the box.

Heshi was holding the form. Looking at it. Her bandaged arm held against her body. Her children behind her — three of them, the oldest maybe ten, watching their mother hold a piece of paper that asked her to say the burn was her fault.

She signed.

Because her children needed to eat. And the cooker — even the defective one, even the one that might crack in three days or thirty — was still cheaper than fuel wood. And the Temple man was standing there with his clean robes and his ledger and his replacement unit, and saying no meant saying no to the only cooking technology her family could afford.

She signed, and the administrator smiled, and the replacement cooker was placed on her counter beside the blackened ruin of the first one.

Jayde watched. Inside, the three voices that shared her mind were in rare agreement.

(That woman just signed away her right to be angry about getting burned. For a cooker that’s going to burn her again.)

Institutional liability deflection. Standard across multiple civilisational models. The pattern is consistent: distribute defective product, blame the user, require waiver as a condition of replacement, repeat.

[This would be an excellent time to bite someone,] Reiko offered.

(Not yet.)

[The offer stands.]

On Jayde’s shoulder, Takara watched the administrator smile at Heshi. Watched the woman clutch the replacement cooker to her chest with her burned arm. Watched the children behind her — three small faces, the oldest already learning the expression that frontier children wore when the powerful came to visit. The expression that said: be small, be quiet, don’t attract attention.

Takara had served queens and kings across five thousand years. Had watched empires rise on the strength of institutions that served their people, and had watched those same empires rot when the institutions began serving themselves instead. The pattern was always the same. The language changed — divine mandate, sacred duty, blessed instruments, spiritual readiness — but the architecture beneath the language was identical. Power flowing upward. Blame flowing downward. And in between: people like Heshi, signing forms with burned hands because the alternative was worse.

The Temple was dying. Not from an external attack. Not from political opposition. From the particular kind of institutional decay that occurred when an organisation confused its own survival with the survival of the people it claimed to serve. The magitech failures were a symptom. The waiver forms were a symptom. The ”hide the children” whisper spreading through Lower Realm settlements like groundwater through stone — that was the diagnosis.

His charge didn’t need to destroy the Temple. She just needed to keep building. The comparison would do the rest.

He tucked his nose against Jayde’s neck. Warm. Patient. The posture of a sleeping kitten, which was useful, because no one ever suspected a sleeping kitten of conducting strategic analysis.

***

The walk back was quiet.

Emberwane’s light had shifted — the amber of late afternoon bleeding into the copper of early evening, the Lower Realm’s sky doing the thing it did when the season turned and the air carried the particular dry sweetness of the last warm days before Frostforge arrived.

Eden walked beside Jayde. Her blue eyes were steady. Her hands — the hands that had treated Heshi’s burn, that had wrapped a seven-year-old’s rash, that had cleaned and salved and bandaged the consequences of three degrees of formation error — were still.

”In the Federation,” Eden said, ”that would be a class-action product liability suit, a mandatory recall, and criminal charges for the executives who signed off on distribution. The injured families would own the Temple by the time the courts were done.”

”We don’t have courts,” Jayde said. ”We have something better.”

”Better?”

”We have better products.”

***

The workshop. Evening. The Pavilion’s ambient light warm around them — the particular quality of a space that responded to the people inside it, adjusting temperature and illumination with the quiet attentiveness of architecture that had been doing this for longer than the concept of architecture had existed.

Green had left tea. Of course, Green had left tea — she always did, the small ceramic pot on the workbench warming itself through a formation that Jayde had built specifically because Green’s tea deserved better than cooling while its intended recipients were out fixing the world’s problems.

Jayde’s hands were on the workbench. Tools. Formation crystals. The skeleton of a new cooker design — not the standard Academy model, but a simplified version. Fewer components. Lower material cost. The same safety architecture, scaled down to a price point that frontier families could reach without Temple financing.

”We increase production,” Jayde said. ”Lower the price. Make the Academy cookers so available and so reliable that nobody needs to buy the Temple version.”

”And the injured families?”

”Free healing through the Academy clinic. Anyone with a Temple product injury, treated at no cost.”

She fitted a formation crystal into the simplified housing. The resonance locked — clean, precise, the seventeen micro-arrays in their graduated spiral distributing load across the containment ring the way the design demanded. No shortcuts. No three-degree errors. No compromise between function and understanding.

”We don’t fight the Temple with speeches or politics. We fight them with THIS.” She held up the simplified cooker. Small. Practical. The formation runes correct to a fraction of a degree. ”A cooker that works. A salve dispenser that doesn’t explode. A formation light that lasts for months instead of days. We make the comparison so obvious that even the Temple’s own customers start asking questions.”

On the workbench, Takara sat beside the ceramic teapot. He watched Jayde’s hands as they worked — the formation crystals, the resonance locks, the small, precise movements of someone who built things the way other people breathed. His three ribbons caught the Pavilion’s ambient light. Pink. Blue. Gold.

His ears were forward. His assessment of the Temple’s strategic position, compiled from the protect detail’s observation network across Lower Realm settlements: declining. The attempt to control magitech through replication had accelerated credibility loss faster than a decade of political pressure could have achieved. Anti-Temple sentiment in frontier communities was approaching a threshold that would be difficult to reverse.

And in the mine shafts south of Ashfall Village, the spaces were being measured. The children’s hiding places prepared. Not by anyone Takara’s network could identify — by parents. By mothers and fathers who had heard what happened in Millhaven and had started making plans of their own.

Hide the children.

The whisper was growing.

Jayde’s hands worked. The simplified cooker took shape — clean lines, correct geometry, a device that would cook food and not explode, and cost less than the Temple version, and carry no golden seal because it didn’t need one. Function was its own blessing.

The Temple copies the shape, Jayde thought. We build the substance.

Outside the Pavilion, in the Academy’s courtyards, the evening bells marked the eighth hour. Students retreating to their quarters. Instructors closing their lecture halls. The ordinary rhythms of an institution that existed to teach, that was learning — slowly, through the actions of one veiled girl with a workbench and a kitten — to do more than teach.

To build.

To heal.

To make things that worked.
