Hogwarts: Even Voldemort Can't Stop Me From Studying

Chapter 561: Chapter 178: Favor of Fate (Part 2)

”Of course,” Madam Pomfrey said with a smile, ”After staying at the school for so long, one can learn a bit of every secret.”

”What’s going on?” Vid asked, his smokey grey eyes full of curiosity.

A storied elder like Madam Pomfrey, filled with true histories, could hardly resist the expression of ”wanting to hear a story” from the juniors. As she treated the wound, she said:

”Many years ago, two werewolves mated in their wolf form during a full moon. They gave birth to a litter of true wolf pups, who were very intelligent and beautiful. Although they had the appearance of wolves, they possessed the heart of a human. With Dumbledore’s permission, they were secretly placed in the Forbidden Forest to live.”

”Two werewolves?” Vid asked in confusion, ”But the child only said his father was a werewolf.”

”That was many years ago. This little one should be the third generation; his mother found another werewolf.” Madam Pomfrey sighed sympathetically, ”I must say, such actions are quite unwise... poor child.”

”Poor?” Vid repeated.

”That she-wolf should have mated with a regular wolf,” Madam Pomfrey said. ”The more human bloodline there is in their descendants, the smarter they become... but cursed by such a body, the smarter they are, the more they suffer...”

Vid fell into silence.

Madam Pomfrey didn’t take long to treat the wound. She said to Vid, ”Nobeta’s claws and teeth contain toxins, so this little one needs to stay here overnight. Tomorrow morning, take it back to the Forbidden Forest.”

”Understood, Ma’am.” Vid glanced at the sleeping wolf pup and said, ”I’ll come back tomorrow morning.”

...

The Eagle-Shaped Door Ring uttered a melodious and gentle voice, ”I never speak, yet I answer all questions; I never move, yet I can take you anywhere; I never think, yet I can give you wisdom. What am I?”

”A book,” Vid said.

”Correct answer.” The door opened.

Vid entered the Ravenclaw Common Room and immediately saw Michael and a few students who had been to the Forbidden Forest being surrounded by the others. Everyone eagerly listened to their evening ”adventure” stories and repeatedly asked questions.

”Was she really sixty feet tall?” a girl asked curiously yet fearfully.

”Even more, I think,” Michael said seriously, ”I was looking up from the ground, you know, estimating like that is very inaccurate.”

”Weren’t you scared? Such a giant creature, if it were me, I would probably be scared to death,” a younger student with glasses timidly asked.

”Actually, at first, I was pretty scared,” Michael admitted honestly. ”But when Nobeta lowered her head so I could touch her neck, I felt inexplicably moved. Can you imagine that feeling?”

Sighs of envy echoed around the fireplace.

”I also want to touch a fire dragon with my own hands... It’s a pity I’m not one of Professor Hagrid’s favored students,” someone said regretfully.

”Actually, when we were leaving, Professor Hagrid gave us an assignment.”

Michael put on a face as if sharing a secret and lowered his voice, ”If anyone volunteers to write a paper, showing the Professor their love for fire dragons, maybe next time they go to the Forbidden Forest, they’ll bring you along...”

Vid shook his head and walked around the crowd, heading upstairs.

He knew Michael wasn’t trying to trick others into doing his homework; it was just pure reluctance to be the only one suffering the burden of studying.

Before Michael could finish speaking, many students had already scoffed and dispersed. But a few still decided to take up the extra paper assignment challenge.

...

Vid returned to his dorm, tidied up a bit, and stayed in the wardrobe space for a while.

The preliminary transformation of the space was complete. The white functional rooms were connected in a series, with a bathroom, bedroom, dining room, Alchemy Room, Magic Potion Room, warehouse... Various rooms were arranged neatly, almost meeting all Vid’s needs.

Because of this, he rarely went to the Room of Requirement now. That room wasn’t as convenient as his wardrobe space, was farther away, but was close to Dumbledore’s office tower, with a portrait always watching.

Although Vid had no grievances with Dumbledore or Barnabas now, he preferred the feeling of having a completely private space.

When Vid emerged from the wardrobe space, it was already late, but the Communication Pea on the desk was glowing with a faint light.

Vid pressed the Communication Pea into his ear, gently pressing down.

”Hi, Vid?” his father Ferdinand’s voice came through the Communication Pea, ”Not asleep yet so late?”

”You too,” Vid couldn’t help but smile, ”Still going through documents this late?”

”...Just one more to go, I’ll finish soon,” Ferdinand said, ”Vid, the person you’re looking for has been found.”

Vid paused, ”...Huh?”

”Huh?” Ferdinand echoed his tone in surprise, asking, ”You haven’t forgotten what you entrusted me with before, have you? The werewolf transformation disease, the scientist, do you remember?”

Vid was silent for a moment before he recalled the distant request.

A werewolf named Claire had provided Vid with her blood sample, hoping he could help solve the werewolf transformation disease. Vid had anonymously sent the sample to a university lab, entrusting them to conduct tests.

Unfortunately, the tests yielded no results. Then other matters occurred, making Vid realize that entrusting strangers with tests was quite risky, as there were many in the Muggle world knowledgeable about the Magic World.

So Vid didn’t purchase more samples from Claire, and during leisure times, he mentioned to Ferdinand that he hoped to find specialized talent and establish a private lab to research the werewolf transformation disease.

But at the time, he mentioned it casually, without much hope, more like making a Christmas wish.

Because establishing a private lab required significant funding, not to mention the fact that talented and trustworthy scientists weren’t like cabbages growing in the field, ready to be picked at will.

Vid then envied a certain shrunken detective—next door to him lived a versatile grandfather with a magical pocket, capable of realizing various fantastic ideas; later, another top student girl joined, capable of creating Rejuvenation potions.

He didn’t expect Ferdinand to actually search for such a person, and after so long, actually found him.

His father’s warm voice reached his ears, ”As you said, that person has deep research in genomics, evolutionary biology, and bioinformatics. I’m not familiar with academic matters, but I asked around, and everyone I asked praised him highly. He used to be a top scientist in the field.”

”...Sounds like you’ve been scammed,” Vid frowned. ”How could we possibly stumble upon such talent?”

”Because he’s sick, Vid.”

Ferdinand patiently explained, ”A stroke, very severe. I went to see him; he’s in a muddled state, limbs paralyzed, unable to speak. He lives in a nursing home, hasn’t had visitors in over three months, supposedly has little time left, even his children have given up.”

”So you brought him back and need to cure him first,” Vid said as he lay in bed and sighed. ”But Dad, I don’t know if someone on the verge of death can be healed by magic.”

”We can try. If it doesn’t work, so be it,” Ferdinand said. ”Vid, strong, intelligent, loyal, and knowledgeable individuals usually don’t possess all these traits simultaneously; even if such a person exists, they can’t be easily used by you.”

”I understand, Dad,” Vid smiled, ”Finding him must have been a lot of work for you... Thank you.”

”It’s good if it can help you,” Ferdinand replied with a smile, ”It’s also our good fortune.”

”Fortune indeed...”

Vid instinctively turned his head to look.

On the desk was a small Cthulhu fish tank he had made himself, with magically created fish swimming tirelessly inside.

He smiled and said, ”...Indeed.”
