Boundless Family Upgrades For The Deadbeat Lord

Raymond had barely finished breakfast when he received another reminder that noble politics involved considerably more than exchanging congratulations and attending expensive receptions.

Three letters awaited him on the dining table, each concerning a different matter. One proposed preferential commercial privileges, another requested discussions about military cooperation, while the third invited him to consider a marriage alliance with a family he had never met.

Raymond examined the final letter before looking toward Cassian.

”Apparently, I’ve become such an interesting person that strangers are offering me their daughters,” he remarked, shaking his head. ”Should I be flattered or concerned?”

Cassian maintained a remarkably serious expression. ”Marriage alliances are common among noble houses, Your Excellency. They can strengthen political relationships and establish obligations between families.”

Raymond returned the letter to its envelope.

”Then I’ll politely decline for now. I have enough obligations without acquiring relatives through correspondence.”

Cassian smiled as Raymond reached for the commercial proposal.

The document requested preferential access to Althoff’s markets in exchange for assistance securing additional merchant connections.

At first glance, the arrangement appeared beneficial. However, several clauses would grant the proposing house considerable influence over future trading privileges.

Raymond frowned.

”They want favorable market access, but they also expect us to restrict competing merchants,” he observed. ”That’s hardly a generous offer.”

”Commercial privileges often carry political consequences, my Lord,” Cassian replied. ”A noble house controlling important trading arrangements can exercise influence without deploying a single soldier.”

Raymond nodded thoughtfully.

He had already encountered similar concerns while negotiating Althoff’s growing commercial relationships. Ysabel Merrow had repeatedly warned him against agreements that allowed individual merchants or noble families to dominate essential markets.

The same principle evidently applied throughout the Kingdom.

A territory’s wealth could become a source of political strength, but poorly negotiated agreements might surrender that strength to someone else.

Later that morning, Raymond attended a private discussion with representatives connected to House Marwick.

The meeting took place inside a respectable merchant residence near the Royal Capital’s commercial quarter.

Two representatives awaited him: Lord Adrian Marwick, a younger relative of Countess Eveline Marwick, and Mistress Cecilia Brandt, an experienced commercial adviser serving the Countess.

Both greeted Raymond with appropriate courtesy.

”Count Althoff, thank you for accepting our invitation,” Adrian said, offering a respectful bow. ”My cousin has followed reports concerning your territory’s development with considerable interest.”

Raymond returned the greeting. ”The pleasure is mine, Lord Adrian. Countess Marwick’s correspondence was among the more practical proposals I’ve received since arriving in the capital.”

Cecilia smiled appreciatively.

”Her Ladyship believes that prosperous neighboring territories can benefit one another through carefully arranged commerce,” she explained. ”House Marwick possesses established merchant connections, while Althoff appears to be developing considerable agricultural and industrial potential.”

Raymond took his seat. ”That sounds promising. What arrangements does the Countess have in mind?”

Cecilia opened a prepared document containing several preliminary proposals.

House Marwick wished to explore regular exchanges involving agricultural products, processed materials, manufactured goods, and transportation services.

Its merchant partners could potentially supply specialized tools, textiles, and construction materials that Althoff currently obtained through smaller independent agreements.

In return, Marwick’s commercial networks might provide additional markets for Althoff’s agricultural surplus and processed Beast materials.

Raymond examined the proposals carefully.

”These arrangements could be useful,” he acknowledged. ”However, I wouldn’t want either territory becoming dependent upon a single commercial partner.”

Adrian nodded. ”Her Ladyship shares that concern, Count Althoff. The intention is to establish reliable trade, not exclusive control over your markets.”

”Then we’re beginning from a reasonable position,” Raymond replied.

Cecilia explained that House Marwick preferred negotiated transportation schedules, clearly defined commercial responsibilities, and agreements that allowed both parties to adjust quantities according to demand.

Raymond appreciated the practical approach.

Nevertheless, he avoided making commitments beyond preliminary discussions.

”Our Mistress of Trade, Ysabel Merrow, will need to examine the details,” he explained. ”She oversees our commercial agreements and understands our current production capacity better than anyone.”

Cecilia appeared pleased. ”An excellent arrangement, Your Excellency. We can prepare a formal proposal for her consideration.”

Their conversation continued for another hour, covering transportation costs, merchant security, and the difficulties created by inconsistent road conditions between territories.

Raymond mentioned his observations during the journey to the capital.

”Some roads are excellent, while others become almost unusable after heavy rain,” he remarked. ”Reliable trade requires dependable transportation, not merely favorable prices.”

Adrian agreed. ”Precisely. House Marwick has invested considerably in maintaining its principal commercial routes. Unfortunately, goods must sometimes cross territories whose lords have different priorities.”

Raymond smiled. ”Then perhaps we should begin by identifying routes that already function properly before discussing anything more ambitious.”

By the time the meeting concluded, both sides had agreed to exchange preliminary commercial documents through their respective representatives.

Raymond departed satisfied that the discussion had produced something more valuable than another collection of elaborate compliments.

However, his afternoon proved considerably less pleasant.

While returning toward his residence, Raymond encountered Baron Leopold Hartmann outside a government building near the administrative quarter.

The older noble greeted him warmly before asking whether he had time for a brief conversation.

”Count Althoff, I hear you’ve been speaking with House Marwick,” Leopold remarked as they walked beneath a covered arcade. ”That’s an influential family to cultivate.”

Raymond glanced toward him.

”Countess Marwick appears interested in commercial cooperation,” he answered. ”We’re examining whether our territories might benefit from regular trade.”

Leopold nodded, although his expression became more serious. ”Then allow me to offer some advice. Commercial relationships are rarely separate from politics. A Countess who helps your merchants today may expect your support during a dispute tomorrow.”

Raymond considered the warning.

”I understand that favors can create expectations,” he replied. ”That’s why I prefer agreements with clearly defined obligations.”

”A sensible approach,” Leopold acknowledged. ”Particularly considering the attention your territory has attracted recently.”

Raymond raised an eyebrow.

”What sort of attention?”

Leopold hesitated before answering. ”Some neighboring lords are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with Althoff’s growth. Your construction projects have attracted craftsmen, laborers, and entire families from territories that cannot offer comparable wages.”

Raymond’s expression remained calm.

He had already received complaints from Lord Edric Halden concerning workers relocating from Greymoor.

”People generally move when they believe they’ll find better opportunities,” Raymond observed. ”Althoff isn’t forcing anyone to leave their homes.”

”Perhaps not,” Leopold replied. ”But losing productive residents affects agricultural output, local taxation, and the ability to maintain essential services. Some lords consider your recruitment efforts an indirect challenge to their authority.”

Raymond frowned thoughtfully.

The complaint was not entirely unreasonable.

A territory losing experienced workers could face genuine economic difficulties, particularly if its remaining population struggled to maintain production.

However, he could hardly justify denying people employment simply because neighboring nobles disliked competition.

”Then those lords should consider why their residents are leaving,” Raymond answered. ”I have no intention of interfering with their legal authority, but I won’t refuse honest workers who voluntarily seek employment in Althoff.”

Leopold studied him for a moment before nodding.

”That position is understandable, Count Althoff. Just remember that reasonable arguments don’t always prevent political resentment.”

Raymond thanked him for the warning before returning to his residence.

That evening, he reviewed the notes collected during his first days in the Royal Capital.

The political landscape was becoming clearer.

Gold provided resources, but wealth alone did not guarantee influence. Land determined jurisdiction and taxation rights, yet territorial claims required proper recognition. Military strength could discourage threats while simultaneously alarming neighboring nobles.

Even commercial agreements and marriage alliances could alter the balance of relationships between powerful families.

Raymond leaned back in his chair.

”So that’s how the game works,” he murmured. ”Everyone wants something, and nobody wants anyone else becoming too powerful.”

Cassian, who had been reviewing the following day’s arrangements, looked toward him.

”Is something troubling you, Your Excellency?”

”Not exactly,” Raymond replied. ”I’m beginning to understand why the Royal Chancellery takes territorial matters so seriously. A single Count’s decisions can affect several neighboring territories.”

Cassian nodded.

”That is why recognition by royal authority matters, my Lord. It establishes responsibilities and helps prevent disputes between noble houses.”

Raymond considered the upcoming proceedings.

His County’s registration, territorial boundaries, and military obligations would soon be examined by royal officials.

He needed to approach those discussions carefully.

Unknown to him, however, several neighboring nobles had already begun preparing their own arguments.

Inside a chamber belonging to the Royal Chancellery, Baron Oswald Varnholt sat alongside Lord Edric Halden and another regional representative.

Before them stood a royal official responsible for receiving territorial petitions.

”Your concerns have been recorded,” the official stated, examining their submitted documents. ”However, allegations concerning another noble house must be supported by appropriate evidence.”

Varnholt inclined his head respectfully.

”Naturally. We merely believe that Count Althoff’s extraordinary expansion deserves closer examination before his territorial privileges are formally confirmed.”

Halden leaned forward.

”His recruitment efforts are affecting neighboring settlements,” he added. ”And reports concerning his military strength raise further questions.”

The official studied the documents in silence.

Finally, he placed them beside a growing collection of reports concerning House Althoff.

”These matters will be brought to the attention of the appropriate royal authorities,” he declared.

And with that, the concerns surrounding Althoff’s expanding influence reached the Royal Chancellery.
