Boundless Family Upgrades For The Deadbeat Lord

By the time the first row of houses received doors, Althoff had acquired three new bakeries, eleven food stalls, two temporary inns, and enough arguments over market space to keep Ysabel irritated from sunrise until supper.

Construction had poured wages into hands that months earlier had possessed almost nothing, and those coins refused to sit still. Laborers leaving the residential district stopped for meat skewers, bread, stew, or watered ale before walking home.

Quarrymen bought replacement boots. Foresters paid tailors to patch heavy work clothes. Carpenters ordered better tools after receiving steady contracts.

Teamsters spent money at stables, taverns, and repair yards. Every morning, new tables appeared along the roads leading toward active worksites, their owners selling cooked eggs, flatbread, vegetables, smoked meat, cheap gloves, rope, needles, lamp oil, and whatever else someone believed a worker with fresh wages might buy.

Raymond noticed the change because the streets had become louder. Old Althoff had once gone quiet after food distribution ended.

Now hammering from construction mixed with merchants shouting prices, wagon drivers cursing traffic, smithies ringing almost continuously, and bakers dragging trays from ovens before dawn.

One former refugee family had converted the front room of its temporary residence into a bakery after discovering that road crews would buy nearly anything warm before starting work.

Another woman sold lunches from a handcart near the sawmill and had hired two assistants within a week. Near the quarry route, somebody erected a rough timber building, put six beds inside, called it an inn, and began charging visiting merchants who preferred not to sleep beside their wagons.

Raymond stared at the crooked sign for several seconds before telling Lily, ”Capitalism has discovered lumber.”

Lily informed him the innkeeper was already asking permission to add another floor.

The blacksmiths were suffering from success. Roderic’s production contracts had filled every forge with orders for nails, brackets, hinges, chisels, picks, shovel heads, wagon fittings, wheel rims, clamps, and replacement tools. Private customers had not disappeared simply because Public Works needed iron.

Farmers wanted plow repairs.

Teamsters needed fittings. Carpenters wanted specialized tools. New workshops wanted hardware. Several smiths had begun hiring apprentices, while Roderic shifted simpler repetitive work toward younger craftsmen under supervision so experienced smiths could handle difficult pieces.

Carpenters were doing the same. Torren had taken on four apprentices and complained that two had never held a proper saw before arriving. Three weeks later, one was producing standard window frames without supervision. Skills were spreading because demand made teaching people profitable.

Transportation became its own business. Government wagons still handled strategic materials and scheduled public deliveries, but private teamsters quickly filled everything around them. Merchants paid carts to move goods from incoming caravans.

Workshop owners hired haulers for timber and charcoal. Bakers paid for flour deliveries. Construction subcontractors rented wagons when government allocations could not cover convenience.

Men who owned a sturdy wagon and two healthy animals suddenly discovered that everyone needed something moved somewhere.

Stable yards expanded. Wheelwrights received more work. Harness makers sold faster than they could stitch. Even manure acquired value because farmers near the city wanted it hauled to fields instead of left accumulating around animal yards.

Raymond watched one cart carrying manure pass another loaded with polished furniture and decided that this was probably what economic development looked like when nobody cleaned it up for a report.

The future Central Commercial District attracted attention before its permanent market buildings existed.

The new avenue gave it access, survey stakes showed where streets and public squares would rise, and every merchant capable of reading a map understood what would happen once residential neighborhoods filled around it.

Temporary stalls began clustering near the edge of the designated market square until Ysabel ordered them into marked rows. That solved nothing.

Two merchants nearly came to blows over a corner position facing the avenue. A baker insisted he had been promised a stall beside the future fountain.

Three cloth sellers submitted applications for the same frontage. One enterprising man attempted to reserve six spaces using the names of relatives who apparently had no idea they had become merchants.

Ysabel caught him.

Raymond learned about the dispute when he passed the temporary Trade counter and heard her say, with terrifying calm, ”Your grandmother is registered as seventy-three years old, lives in the northern core, and according to the Civil Registry has been bedridden since winter. Would you like to explain why she has applied to operate a leather stall?”

The man opened his mouth.

Ysabel raised one finger. ”Choose the next sentence carefully.”

Raymond kept walking before laughter betrayed him. By afternoon, the Department of Trade had tightened stall allocation rules. Active businesses received priority according to category, demonstrated need, compliance history, and available space. Nobody could purchase permanent ownership of prime commercial land merely by arriving first. Temporary permits remained temporary, and future leases would be issued under proper rules once the district developed.

Those permits were producing money. Not spectacular amounts, but real revenue. Market stalls paid rents. Merchants paid licensing fees. Workshops operating on government property paid leases.

Commercial forestry and quarry extraction generated resource charges where private operators used designated public resources. Incoming caravans paid established trade and service fees rather than arbitrary gate demands. Government warehouses charged for certain commercial storage.

None of the charges were designed to crush activity; Ysabel and Alaric kept them modest because attracting merchants mattered more than squeezing every copper from them. Yet thousands of small transactions accumulated.

The report reached Raymond on a clear morning while he was eating breakfast in his study.

Alaric placed a ledger beside his plate and said, ”The Territorial Treasury has completed its first consolidated revenue statement.”

Raymond lowered his bread. ”Actual revenue?”

”Unless you have secretly taught ledgers to hallucinate.” Lily leaned over Raymond’s shoulder until he pushed her forehead gently away.

The report separated market rents, licenses, workshop leases, resource fees, trade charges, warehouse income, and several smaller categories. Expenditures remained far larger because House Althoff was financing roads, construction, wages, equipment, and expansion.

But the revenue column was no longer decorative.

The total for the reporting period was 3,842 Gold Coins.

Raymond read it twice.

Compared with the 171,200 Gold Coins available through his Family Funds, 3,842 was not extraordinary.

The city could consume that amount frighteningly quickly. Public Works alone could probably murder it before lunch. Yet Raymond felt more satisfaction looking at those figures than he had expected. These coins had not appeared because the System rewarded a mission.

They had moved through markets, workshops, merchants, workers, leases, wagons, and resources before a portion entered the Territorial Treasury. Althoff had generated them.

Then a familiar notification appeared privately before his eyes.

[ Territorial Revenue Recognized ]

[ 3,842 Gold Coins Generated Through Recognized Family Territory ]

[ Financial Synchronization Activated ]

[ System Points Gained: +3,842 SP ]

[ Current System Points: 369,842 SP ]

Raymond froze with the ledger still open. He had known Financial Synchronization linked territorial wealth and System growth, but seeing the developing economy feed the System directly made the implication far more significant.

The exchange was equivalent: one Gold Coin of recognized territorial revenue generated one System Point without consuming the original coin.

The Treasury kept its 3,842 Gold Coins. Raymond gained 3,842 SP. Growth was beginning to reinforce growth.

He leaned back slowly. If Althoff eventually earned ten thousand Gold Coins through genuine economic activity, the System would gain ten thousand SP. If it earned one hundred thousand, the same principle applied. Roads increased trade.

Trade generated revenue. Revenue generated System Points. System Points could purchase bottleneck-breaking infrastructure, which increased production, which created more trade and revenue.

Raymond could see the loop forming, but he also understood the danger. Taxing people brutally just to farm System Points would cripple the economy producing those points.

The best source of System growth was not extraction. It was making Althoff richer.

Alaric mistook his silence for concern. ”The amount is modest compared with current expenditure, but that is expected. We are still financing expansion heavily.”

Raymond closed the ledger. ”Modest? This might be my favorite money in the territory.”

Alaric stared at him.

”It earned itself,” Raymond explained.

Later that afternoon, he walked through the future Commercial District without guards crowding him. Temporary stalls lined marked sections of the avenue. A baker handed bread to quarry workers.

A tailor measured a carpenter for a coat while arguing about price. Teamsters negotiated deliveries beside loaded wagons. A smith’s apprentice carried crates of hinges toward the residential district.

Two merchants complained to a Trade clerk about stall placement while another unloaded cooking pots from a caravan. Coins changed hands everywhere. Children carried baskets between stalls while musicians discovered that workers occasionally paid for songs.

Beyond them, hammers continued striking.

The market had followed the hammer exactly as Raymond hoped.

And for the first time, Althoff was beginning to pay for its own future.
