Boundless Family Upgrades For The Deadbeat Lord

The morning after Althoff Elementary Academy officially opened, Raymond discovered that becoming a Count involved considerably more paperwork than he had anticipated.

His study desk had disappeared beneath a mountain of correspondence, most of it bearing the elaborate seals of noble houses scattered throughout Zulor and the surrounding regions.

Raymond stared at the collection with an expression of disbelief.

”Alaric, please tell me these aren’t all addressed to me,” he remarked, lifting a particularly thick envelope decorated with golden wax.

Alaric, who had accompanied the servants delivering the correspondence, offered him an apologetic smile.

”Unfortunately, they are, Your Excellency,” the Chief Administrator replied. ”Your elevation to Count has attracted considerable attention. Some letters arrived several days ago, but the latest deliveries have nearly doubled our correspondence.”

Raymond dropped the envelope onto the desk.

”Wonderful. I finally finish building a school, and the nobles decide I need additional reading lessons.”

Alaric chuckled before arranging the letters into several smaller piles. ”These matters are important, my Lord. As a Baron, you could conduct most of your affairs without attracting significant interest from the greater noble houses. Your new title changes that considerably.”

Raymond understood the distinction.

A Count possessed greater authority, responsibilities, and political standing than an ordinary Baron. His decisions could influence neighboring territories, commercial relationships, military arrangements, and regional administration.

Unfortunately, greater importance also meant attracting people who wanted something.

”All right,” Raymond conceded, settling into his chair. ”Let’s discover how many of these people actually want to congratulate me.”

Alaric selected the first envelope.

”This letter comes from Baron Ulric Fenwick,” he explained. ”He offers formal congratulations and expresses hope that our territories will maintain peaceful relations.”

Raymond examined the carefully worded message.

”That sounds harmless enough,” he observed.

”On the surface, certainly,” Alaric agreed. ”However, notice his request concerning future military movements near our shared commercial routes.”

Raymond reread the relevant passage.

The Baron had politely suggested establishing a system of advance notifications whenever Althoff deployed substantial military forces near neighboring territory.

”He’s worried about our Knights,” Raymond concluded.

”Most likely, Your Excellency,” Alaric answered. ”Reports concerning your Gold Knights have circulated widely. Neighboring nobles naturally want reassurance that Althoff’s growing military strength won’t threaten their interests.”

Raymond considered the request.

He had no intention of invading anyone, but agreeing to notify another noble whenever his soldiers moved could create unnecessary restrictions.

”We can assure him that Althoff respects neighboring territories,” Raymond decided. ”But don’t promise advance notification of every deployment. Our military arrangements remain our responsibility.”

Alaric nodded approvingly and recorded the instruction.

The next letter came from Baron Oswald Varnholt.

Unlike Fenwick’s restrained message, Varnholt’s correspondence contained an elaborate expression of goodwill followed by several questions concerning Althoff’s recent economic expansion.

Raymond read the letter twice before raising an eyebrow.

”He wants information about our workshops, commercial revenues, population growth, and military expenditure,” he remarked. ”Should I send him the keys to our Treasury while I’m at it?”

Alaric suppressed a smile. ”His inquiries are presented as an effort to identify opportunities for regional cooperation, my Lord.”

”Of course they are,” Raymond replied dryly. ”And I’m sure he’d appreciate knowing exactly how much money we have available.”

The Chief Administrator explained that neighboring nobles frequently exchanged general economic information, particularly when discussing trade agreements or infrastructure cooperation.

However, detailed financial records were another matter entirely.

Raymond instructed Alaric to prepare a courteous response highlighting Althoff’s growing markets and willingness to maintain friendly commercial relations without disclosing confidential figures.

They continued examining the correspondence.

Several minor noble houses offered congratulations without requesting anything substantial. Others proposed exchanges of representatives, commercial discussions, or future visits.

A letter from Lord Edric Halden of Greymoor proved more complicated.

Raymond frowned while reading it.

”He’s complaining that workers are leaving his territory and relocating to Althoff,” he observed.

Alaric nodded. ”Greymoor has experienced some departures recently, Your Excellency. Our construction wages and employment opportunities have attracted laborers from several neighboring territories.”

Raymond leaned back thoughtfully.

The migration was hardly surprising. Althoff’s expanding industries required workers, and people naturally sought better opportunities when they became available.

Nevertheless, he understood why neighboring lords might resent losing productive residents.

”Does he actually accuse us of recruiting his people illegally?” Raymond asked.

”Not directly, my Lord,” Alaric replied. ”He suggests that our employment advertisements are encouraging unnecessary population movements and requests that we exercise greater restraint.”

Raymond sighed. ”So he wants us to stop offering jobs because his workers might prefer them.”

”That appears to be the underlying concern,” Alaric acknowledged.

Raymond considered the matter before answering. ”We won’t interfere with another lord’s legal authority, but we’re not going to reject honest workers simply because they come from somewhere else. Reply respectfully and emphasize that our recruitment follows proper procedures.”

Alaric recorded the decision.

By midday, the two had reviewed enough correspondence for Raymond to appreciate how carefully noble letters were written.

Almost every request was concealed beneath layers of courtesy.

A proposal for cooperation might involve preferential trading rights. An invitation to discuss security could become an attempt to influence military decisions. Even a seemingly generous offer of assistance might create expectations of future repayment.

Raymond rubbed his temples.

”I’m beginning to understand why nobles spend so much time attending banquets,” he complained. ”Apparently, they need several hours of polite conversation before admitting what they actually want.”

Alaric smiled knowingly. ”Political relationships are rarely straightforward, Your Excellency. A favor accepted today may become an obligation remembered years later.”

That observation stayed with Raymond as they examined the remaining letters.

One correspondence, however, immediately captured his attention.

It bore the seal of House Marwick.

Raymond recognized the crest from the commercial proposal delivered several days earlier.

”Countess Eveline Marwick,” he remarked, opening the letter. ”Now here’s someone who might actually have something useful to discuss.”

The Countess’s message was elegant and direct.

She congratulated Raymond upon his elevation and expressed interest in establishing stronger commercial ties between their territories. House Marwick possessed established trading connections and merchants who might benefit from Althoff’s expanding production.

Unlike several other nobles, she did not request confidential financial information or propose restrictive military arrangements.

Instead, she suggested preliminary discussions concerning transportation, merchant access, and mutually beneficial commercial agreements.

Raymond handed the letter to Alaric. ”What do you think?”

The Chief Administrator studied the contents carefully.

”This proposal appears considerably more practical than most we’ve received, Your Excellency,” he replied. ”Countess Marwick is offering discussions rather than demanding immediate commitments. Nevertheless, any agreement should be examined by the Trade and Commerce Department.”

Raymond nodded. ”Then ask Ysabel to review it. I want to know what advantages such cooperation might offer and whether there are any conditions we should avoid.”

Alaric made another note.

Raymond returned his attention to the Countess’s signature.

He knew relatively little about Eveline Marwick beyond her position and the reputation of her territory’s commercial connections.

Still, the letter suggested she possessed a more practical understanding of trade than some of her fellow nobles.

”At least one of them understands that cooperation should benefit both sides,” Raymond remarked.

Alaric smiled. ”That is generally the foundation of a successful agreement, my Lord.”

The afternoon passed with further correspondence, draft responses, and discussions concerning diplomatic etiquette.

Raymond eventually approved several letters offering congratulations in return, accepting preliminary commercial discussions, and politely declining requests that might compromise Althoff’s independence.

Throughout the process, he became increasingly aware that his promotion had fundamentally changed his position.

He was no longer merely a young lord rebuilding an impoverished territory.

He was Count Raymond von Althoff, a noble whose expanding economy, growing population, and unusual military strength had attracted attention across the region.

Every decision now carried consequences beyond his own borders.

As evening approached, Raymond finally set aside his pen.

”That’s enough diplomacy for one day,” he declared. ”If another noble wants to congratulate me, tell them I’m deeply grateful and currently suffering from excessive correspondence.”

Alaric laughed. ”I’ll attempt to phrase that more appropriately, Your Excellency.”

Before Raymond could respond, a knock sounded at the study door.

A household attendant entered carrying a sealed document.

”Your Excellency, an official courier has arrived from the Royal Chancellery,” the attendant announced. ”He requested that this correspondence be delivered directly into your hands.”

Raymond immediately straightened.

The document bore the unmistakable royal seal of Solaria.

Alaric’s expression became serious as Raymond broke the seal and unfolded the parchment.

The contents were brief but unmistakably authoritative.

Raymond von Althoff was formally instructed to appear before the designated royal authorities in the Royal Capital to complete the proceedings associated with his elevation to Count.

The instructions also referenced territorial registration, military obligations, and the confirmation of his County’s administrative responsibilities.

Raymond finished reading before slowly lowering the document.

”Well, Alaric,” he remarked, looking toward his Chief Administrator, ”it appears the King has finally decided it’s time for us to talk.”

Alaric bowed his head. ”Then we must begin preparing for your journey to the Royal Capital, Your Excellency.”

Raymond looked once more at the royal seal.

For months, his attention had remained fixed upon Althoff’s development.

Now the affairs of the Kingdom of Solaria were calling him beyond his borders.
