Boundless Family Upgrades For The Deadbeat Lord

The first caravan arrived shortly after sunrise, carrying thirty-seven people who had no intention of leaving Althoff once they entered.

By noon, another twenty-three had appeared along the southern road, followed by a family of nine traveling in two battered wagons. None belonged to a merchant company, and none carried enough goods to justify calling their journey a trading expedition.

They had come looking for somewhere to live. At the southern gate, Watchmen directed the newcomers toward a temporary registration station, where clerks recorded their names, places of origin, occupations, family members, and reasons for settling.

The process had become familiar enough that nobody considered it particularly remarkable anymore. What concerned Oren Vale was the number of people arriving.

Three weeks earlier, the Registry had processed a handful of new households every few days. Now entire groups appeared almost daily, and the benches outside his Department were rarely empty.

Raymond discovered the scale of the situation when Alaric presented the latest population figures during their morning briefing.

The Chief Administrator placed two reports beside each other and explained, ”Our last confirmed population was five thousand, one hundred and forty-three. Since then, we’ve registered substantial numbers of new residents, including families arriving through the southern road and smaller groups entering from the western settlements. Some registrations are still being verified, but the current recognized population stands at six thousand, two hundred and eighty-one.”

Raymond stared at the figure. ”We’ve gained more than a thousand people?”

Alaric nodded. ”Over the intervening weeks, my Lord. Not overnight. And we have another seventy-four applicants awaiting completion of registration.”

Raymond leaned back in his chair. ”Apparently Althoff has become fashionable.”

Alaric adjusted his spectacles. ”Fashionable places usually have fewer complaints about accommodation.”

That was certainly true. The Residential District had expanded beyond its original hundred plots, with additional housing blocks appearing along newly completed streets.

Mara’s construction crews were building faster than they had during winter, aided by the sawmill, quarry, standardized designs, and a growing workforce.

Unfortunately, the new workforce also needed somewhere to sleep. Temporary lodging houses were filling, rental prices had begun climbing in desirable areas, and several families had started sharing accommodations while waiting for permanent arrangements.

The Administration refused to promise every newcomer a house, but that distinction was difficult to explain to people who had traveled for days after hearing that Althoff offered shelter and employment.

Raymond listened to the complaints and asked Alaric, ”How many of them actually have work?”

Alaric consulted another page. ”Most employable adults have either found employment, submitted applications, or begun arranging independent trades. Our difficulty is matching them with vacancies quickly enough.”

Raymond decided to visit the southern registration station himself. This time, unlike his previous walk through the city, he brought Oren and Corvin because he wanted to understand what the newcomers were bringing with them.

The queue stretched beneath a temporary awning beside the gate, where families waited with bundles, carts, livestock, and possessions that looked painfully inadequate for starting new lives.

A man carrying masonry tools stood beside a woman with three children. Two hunters argued quietly about whether they needed separate permits.

An elderly couple sat on their luggage while a younger relative filled out their forms. Nearby, a former soldier with a damaged knee was explaining that he could still train recruits even if marching long distances had become difficult.

Raymond approached the mason first. The man introduced himself as Garron and nearly dropped his tools when he recognized the Baron.

Raymond waved away the formalities and asked, ”Why Althoff? There are closer towns than this one.”

Garron scratched his beard before answering, ”A Golden Road driver told me you were building streets faster than you could finish houses, my Lord. Said masons could find work before their boots dried. I thought he was exaggerating until I saw the road outside.”

Raymond glanced at the man’s worn tools and asked whether he had family accompanying him.

Garron nodded toward the woman and children. ”My wife and little ones. We sold what we couldn’t carry. There’s no work left in our village unless you enjoy repairing the same three walls every spring.”

Raymond smiled. ”You’ll find plenty of walls here. Unfortunately, most haven’t been built yet.”

Farther along the queue, a farmer named Sellen explained that his cousin had survived the winter in Althoff and written home describing fertile fields, paid labor, and opportunities to apply for cultivation rights.

Sellen had brought his wife, two brothers, and enough seed to begin working immediately. Another family had heard about Althoff from relatives already living in the Residential District.

A carpenter had followed reports of the expanding Artisan District. Three young men wanted construction jobs. A merchant’s widow hoped to reopen her husband’s small textile business.

Their reasons differed, but Raymond noticed something connecting them. Every newcomer had heard about Althoff through someone else. Letters, caravan drivers, traveling merchants, relatives, craftsmen, and hunters had carried the news outward.

The realization stayed with him as he returned toward the castle.

During winter, Althoff had been a place desperate people stumbled into because they had nowhere else to go. Now people were making deliberate decisions to come.

Some were escaping hardship, certainly, but others were abandoning ordinary lives because they believed better opportunities existed here. Raymond remembered a reward he had barely examined since House Althoff’s first evolution. That evening, alone in his study, he summoned the System and opened the Family Traits section.

[ Family Trait: Beacon of Refuge ]

[ As the recognized territory of House Althoff develops stability, prosperity, security, and favorable reputation, information concerning its opportunities becomes increasingly likely to reach suitable prospective settlers. ]

[ Potential migrants retain independent judgment and freedom of choice. ]

[ Effectiveness increases with territorial development, established travel routes, commercial activity, and public reputation. ]

[ This trait does not create resources, compel migration, or guarantee successful settlement. ]

Raymond read the description twice before laughing quietly. ”So that’s what you’ve been doing.”

The System had not dragged anyone across Zulor or planted irresistible commands inside their minds.

It had amplified something Althoff was already producing: a reputation worth talking about. The better the territory became, the farther that reputation traveled.

Merchants carried stories. Families sent letters. Workers shared opportunities. Those stories reached people who might otherwise never have considered traveling to a forgotten barony.

Raymond leaned back, studying the panel. ”Wonderful. My territory has acquired word-of-mouth advertising.”

Then his smile faded. Advertising, he remembered, was considerably less useful when the business couldn’t handle its customers.

The following morning, Raymond brought the Department heads together with a different question than usual. Instead of asking how many people Althoff could attract, he asked how many it could support.

Harlan wanted additional agricultural workers, but warned that assigning cultivation rights faster than irrigation and tools could be provided would leave families holding promises instead of harvests.

Mara needed builders, yet every new housing block consumed timber, stone, transport capacity, and labor that other projects also required.

Selene reported increasing pressure on medical services.

Darric needed additional Watchmen to patrol growing neighborhoods, while Oren requested more registry clerks to prevent applications from accumulating unanswered.

Ysabel, meanwhile, pointed out that merchants were delighted. More residents meant more customers, more workers, and greater demand for everything from bread to boots.

Raymond listened before giving his instructions. Housing expansion would continue, but permanent allocations had to follow available infrastructure rather than optimistic drawings.

Newcomers with useful skills would be matched to employers through the appropriate Departments, while agricultural applicants would receive clear information about when land, irrigation, and equipment could actually be supplied.

Temporary lodging would be monitored for overcrowding and exploitation. Corvin would track staple inventories against population growth, and Selene would identify where additional medical personnel were needed.

Raymond looked around the table and said, ”I want people coming here because life is better, not because we advertise a better life and leave them sleeping in mud.”

Alaric nodded and began recording the decisions.

Over the next several days, the effects appeared across the city.

A second registration counter opened near the southern approach. Carpenters raised frames along the newest residential street while masons laid drainage beneath the road ahead of them.

Harlan’s assistants interviewed prospective farmers instead of simply handing out cultivation plots.

Workshops posted notices seeking apprentices, and several newcomers found employment before their families finished registering.

Problems remained. Lodging houses were crowded, complaints about rents continued, and food deliveries required closer attention. But each arriving family also brought hands, skills, ideas, and money that Althoff had not possessed before.

Late one evening, Raymond reviewed the updated registry alone. The latest confirmed count had reached six thousand, three hundred and forty-six, with further applications pending.

Beyond his window, lights burned along streets that had been empty fields only weeks earlier. He opened the System again, and a quiet notification appeared.

[ House Althoff — Territorial Development Update ]

[ Recognized Population: 6,346 ]

[ Population Growth: Increasing ]

[ Commercial Activity: Increasing ]

[ Family Trait: Beacon of Refuge — Active ]

Raymond studied the figures, then closed the panel. Every new resident represented another person to feed, house, protect, and govern.

But each also represented another person capable of helping Althoff become something greater.

The difference between prosperity and disaster would depend on whether the city could keep building fast enough to welcome them.
