Boundless Family Upgrades For The Deadbeat Lord

The negotiation began after breakfast and survived long enough for Lily to replace the tea twice. Raymond sat at the head of the receiving-room table with Ysabel and Alaric beside him, while Edmund Vale faced them with Seraphine Dorr and Adrian Pell.

Between the two groups lay inventory sheets, inspection reports, proposed prices, warehouse rates, caravan schedules, and samples from the Beast Tide stockpiles.

Edmund rested one hand over a list of Silver Rank materials and began without ceremony. ”Golden Road will purchase every lot marked here at Seraphine’s assessed price, provided our appraisers inspect the final goods before loading. We would also like first purchasing rights on any government-owned Magic Beast materials Althoff releases for the next three years.”

Raymond read the final clause again, placed the parchment down, and said, ”The purchases are acceptable in principle. The first purchasing rights are not.”

Edmund’s expression barely changed. ”We are proposing to commit wagons, guards, personnel, warehouse capacity, and a permanent branch to a route most companies still consider unproven. Preferential access compensates us for entering early.”

Raymond nodded. ”Preferential treatment and control are different things. If Golden Road gets first rights to every government Beast material, another merchant company knows it only sees what you refuse. That gives them very little reason to establish themselves here.”

Edmund tapped the table once. ”A stable partner can be more valuable than ten unreliable ones.”

Raymond agreed with that, but he shook his head. ”Absolutely, which is why I want Golden Road here. I simply don’t want Althoff dependent on Golden Road.”

Seraphine’s mouth twitched slightly at that, while Adrian’s pen paused over his notes.

Edmund finally smiled. ”You have a suspicious view of merchants.”

Raymond returned it. ”No. I think merchants are intelligent. I would be an idiot to give intelligent people unnecessary leverage over me.”

”Then let’s narrow it,” Edmund said. ”Golden Road receives advance notice of major government auctions.”

Ysabel leaned forward before Raymond answered. ”How much advance notice?”

Edmund proposed three days, but she immediately shook her head. ”Three days allows your purchasing agents to position themselves before competitors even know what quantities are entering the market.”

Edmund turned toward her. ”Mistress Merrow, we are discussing benefits for a company willing to invest here permanently. Surely you don’t expect us to receive the same terms as a trader who appears tomorrow with two carts.”

Ysabel’s answer came calmly. ”You won’t. You can receive reduced introductory caravan fees, guaranteed access to leased warehouse capacity, and priority scheduling for unloading. Public sale information remains public.”

Edmund looked back at Raymond. ”You’ve hired your trade administrator to be difficult.”

Raymond glanced at Ysabel and smiled. ”I hired her because she was difficult.”

Ysabel stared at him. ”A glowing recommendation, my Lord.”

Seraphine pushed a valuation sheet forward. ”Then we should discuss what you are actually willing to sell. Bronze materials are straightforward. The Silver Rank hides, fangs, horns, bones, and cores listed here are commercially useful, and your preservation quality is better than I expected. But your restrictions remove several of the most valuable components.”

Raymond examined the sheet before answering, ”Because our craftsmen need them.”

Seraphine pointed toward another section. ”And the Blackstone Ursar?”

Raymond did not hesitate. ”Not for sale.”

She studied him. ”Not even selected components?”

Raymond shook his head. ”No.”

Seraphine folded her hands. ”Lord Althoff, I can give you a professional valuation range after a complete inspection. Golden Road can also locate specialist buyers capable of paying considerably more than ordinary regional merchants.”

Raymond nodded. ”I want the appraisal. I don’t want the sale.”

Edmund asked whether that position would change if Golden Road secured an exceptional offer.

Raymond answered, ”If somebody offers me a fortune before I understand what I own, my first question is why they’re so eager to pay it.”

Edmund laughed quietly. ”Fair enough. What does Althoff want besides gold?”

That was the question Raymond had been waiting for.

He pulled another document from beside Alaric and slid it across the table. ”Iron. Salt. Medicines. Glass. Paper. Textiles. Precision tools. Specialized construction equipment. Workshop equipment and skilled manufactured goods we cannot produce efficiently yet. Your wagons came here carrying merchandise and planning to leave with ours. I want that to become normal.”

Edmund scanned the list before saying, ”You want Golden Road functioning as your procurement network.”

Raymond corrected him immediately. ”One procurement network.”

Edmund looked up. ”Still protecting yourself from dependence?”

Raymond nodded. ”Still protecting Althoff from stupidity. If your company gives me the best price and service, you’ll get plenty of business. I don’t need to guarantee that by preventing anyone else from competing with you.”

Adrian spoke for the first time since negotiations began. ”If we establish regular service, what volume can Althoff guarantee for return cargo? Beast Tide stockpiles will eventually decline.”

Raymond looked toward him, pleased by the question. ”Today? I won’t guarantee what we cannot deliver. In the future, timber products, agricultural surpluses, wool, flax, processed Beast materials, crafted goods, and whatever else our workshops become competitive at producing. You’ll receive access to purchase those goods. You will not receive ownership of them before they exist.”

Adrian nodded and wrote that down. Edmund added, ”Monthly caravans during passable seasons would require enough business in both directions.”

Ysabel replied, ”Then begin monthly and adjust according to demand. We can coordinate arrival windows so thirty wagons don’t discover another thirty occupying the same unloading yard. If trade volume grows, we increase frequency rather than pretending today’s numbers will remain permanent.”

They moved to property next. Edmund wanted Golden Road to purchase a prime building facing the Central Market square.

Raymond refused before Ysabel finished reading the proposal. ”Commercial property in the planned market remains Althoff-owned.”

Edmund sighed. ”You reject ownership quickly too.”

Raymond leaned back. ”Land values are climbing while we’re still laying roads. Selling prime property now would be generous to you and stupid for me.”

Edmund considered that before changing his offer. ”A long lease, then. Ten years, renewable, with permission to modify the interior for company operations.”

Raymond looked toward Ysabel, who answered, ”Acceptable subject to structural restrictions and inspection. Alterations cannot interfere with neighboring properties, drainage, roads, or public infrastructure.”

Edmund nodded. ”Dedicated warehouse space in the Logistics District?”

Alaric responded, ”Lease, not ownership. Additional capacity can be requested as your trade volume grows.”

Edmund tapped his pen against the table. ”Reduced caravan fees for the first year?”

Raymond replied, ”Twenty percent if you maintain the agreed schedule.”

Edmund countered, ”Thirty.”

Raymond shook his head. ”Twenty.”

Edmund smiled. ”Twenty-five.”

Raymond stared at him for a moment before saying, ”Twenty-five, and you stop negotiating over five percent like you’re buying onions.”

Edmund extended his hand slightly. ”Agreed.”

The hardest discussion returned to exclusivity when Edmund proposed preferred-buyer status for future agricultural exports.

Raymond shook his head. ”No monopoly on grain, wool, flax, livestock products, herbs, or anything else.”

Edmund replied, ”Then give us first opportunity on export lots our caravans are already scheduled to carry. Transportation capacity has value, Lord Althoff.”

Ysabel intervened. ”You can receive notice of registered export availability when that information becomes available to approved merchants and negotiate like everyone else. Your advantage is that your wagons will already be here regularly, your branch will know local producers, and your company will have warehouse capacity waiting.”

Edmund considered her answer before nodding. ”That is an advantage.”

Raymond leaned forward. ”Golden Road can be the first major merchant company to establish itself in Althoff. I want you profitable enough to stay. I do not want you powerful enough to decide whether Althoff trades.”

Edmund studied him, then asked, ”That arrangement means you expect competitors.”

Raymond smiled. ”I’m building a city. I’d be disappointed if they never came.”

By late afternoon, the agreement covered selected Bronze and Silver Rank Beast materials, a permanent Golden Road branch, a long-term shop lease, warehouse space, scheduled caravans, reduced introductory fees, priority imports, and access to future exports without exclusivity.

Seraphine retained appraisal access to the Blackstone Ursar, but every component remained Althoff property unless Raymond later approved a separate sale.

Edmund read the completed contract, signed it, and pushed it across the table. ”You realize our next negotiation will be less friendly once you have three companies competing for this route.”

Raymond signed beneath him and answered, ”Good. Then I’ll know the route is worth competing over.”

The first settlement reached the Territorial Treasury that evening. Beast-material sales, leases, permits, storage charges, and associated commercial revenue produced 28,460 Gold Coins in qualifying external income. Alone in his study, Raymond had barely finished reading the figure when translucent letters appeared.

[ Territorial Revenue Recognized ]

[ 28,460 Gold Coins Generated Through Recognized Family Territory ]

[ Financial Synchronization Activated ]

[ System Points Generated: +28,460 SP ]

[ Current System Points: 398,302 SP ]

Raymond stared at the panel, then at the Treasury statement beneath it. Once, the System had given him wealth and he had poured that wealth into keeping Althoff alive.

Now Althoff had earned wealth itself, and the System had grown stronger because of it. Farms, workshops, markets, merchants, exports, and trade could strengthen the real territory while simultaneously generating the System Points Raymond needed to remove future bottlenecks.

Near sunset, he stood beside Golden Road’s caravan yard and watched iron, salt, medicines, textiles, glass, paper, and tools being unloaded. Across the yard, Althoff workers filled southbound wagons with inspected Beast materials.

Clerks checked manifests while merchants negotiated future orders and teamsters secured cargo.

Once, the road to Althoff had carried necessities inward and desperate gold outward. Now goods traveled both ways, and both sides expected to return.

For the first time, the road was not a lifeline. It was a trade route.
