Boundless Family Upgrades For The Deadbeat Lord

Three days after the Central Market officially opened, Raymond discovered that breakfast had become more expensive.

Not dramatically, and certainly not enough to threaten House Althoff’s finances, but Lily mentioned that the baker supplying several castle kitchens had raised the price of fresh bread because flour demand had increased throughout the city.

Raymond’s first instinct was irritation.

His second was curiosity. By midmorning, instead of sitting behind another ledger, he was walking through Althoff with Lily trailing beside him, watching hundreds of construction workers gather near a Public Works pay station.

Clerks sat behind wooden tables with wage records while foremen confirmed attendance, completed shifts, skilled labor rates, and additional work. Workers stepped forward, received their wages, counted them, signed or marked the ledger, then immediately scattered toward the surrounding streets.

Raymond watched one mason pocket most of his pay before taking several coins and crossing directly toward the Central Market.

”There goes my money,” Raymond muttered.

Lily glanced up at him. ”You paid him.”

”That’s why I’m watching where he takes it.”

The mason stopped at a bakery occupying one of the new permanent shopfronts and purchased two loaves, a small meat pie, and something sweet wrapped in paper. He was hardly alone.

Laborers crowded the counter while an apprentice carried fresh trays from ovens in the rear. The baker accepted coins almost as quickly as his wife could record larger purchases, but Raymond noticed sacks of flour stacked beside the preparation area disappearing equally quickly.

A delivery cart arrived while he watched, carrying more sacks from a mill outside the busiest residential streets.

The baker paid the driver, who handed over a receipt, unloaded the flour with an assistant, and immediately left for another delivery.

The money Raymond had paid a mason that morning was already moving again before the mason had finished eating his pie.

Raymond followed the chain because he had nothing more dignified planned for the next hour. The mill receiving grain was busier than he remembered.

Farmers and government agricultural teams delivered stored grain while mill workers processed flour for bakeries, communal kitchens, inns, and private households.

The miller complained that demand had risen faster than his grinding capacity and had already hired two additional workers. One farmer delivering grain collected payment, argued briefly over the measured weight, then left with coins tucked inside his coat.

Raymond encountered the same farmer an hour later outside a blacksmith’s workshop, paying for a repaired plowshare and ordering two replacement fittings before returning toward the agricultural road.

The blacksmith barely looked up because three other customers were waiting, sparks jumping from the forge while two apprentices worked nearby.

The smith’s money traveled in more directions. A charcoal supplier arrived with a cart and received payment for fuel. An iron merchant collected payment for stock brought from outside Althoff.

A carpenter entered seeking brackets for roof frames. A farmer needed a hoe repaired. A teamster wanted a damaged wheel rim replaced before evening.

The charcoal burner who had just been paid walked across the market and entered a cobbler’s shop because one of his boots had split at the sole.

Raymond watched through the open doorway as the cobbler inspected the damage, shook his head, and apparently convinced the man that repairing those boots again would constitute an insult to leather.

The charcoal burner emerged several minutes later wearing new boots and carrying the old pair over one shoulder.

Lily stared at Raymond. ”Are we following everyone’s money today?”

”Apparently.” Raymond nodded with a smile.

Lily looked at him with a strange expression and said.”That sounds strange.”

Raymond shot her a glance and said. ”It is educational.”

”It still sounds strange.” Lily shrugged her shoulders.

Raymond ignored her and entered the cobbler’s shop. The owner recognized him immediately and nearly dropped the leather he was cutting, but Raymond waved him back to work and asked how business was going.

The cobbler explained that winter had nearly destroyed him because starving people did not buy shoes unless their old ones had completely disintegrated. Construction changed that. Quarrymen destroyed boots.

Foresters destroyed boots. Road workers destroyed boots. Farmers needed durable footwear. New residents who finally possessed wages replaced clothing they had patched through winter.

The cobbler had taken two apprentices and was considering a third. At the end of every week, however, part of what he earned went toward the lease on his permanent market shop.

That lease payment entered the Territorial Treasury.

Raymond stepped back into the market and finally saw the pattern everywhere.

A construction worker bought lunch from a food seller. The food seller purchased meat from a butcher. The butcher paid livestock suppliers and hired another assistant because demand had increased.

Tailors received orders for work clothes and ordinary clothing from families who could finally replace winter rags. Leatherworkers bought hides and produced belts, gloves, harnesses, boots, and protective work equipment.

Wheelwrights repaired the growing number of wagons moving through Althoff.

Carpenters who had once waited days for private commissions now turned away work because residential construction, furniture orders, shop fittings, doors, carts, and government contracts consumed every available hour.

Several had taken apprentices simply because skilled hands had become more valuable than the wages required to train inexperienced ones.

Businesses multiplied wherever demand appeared.

Two additional bakeries had opened near the residential streets. A butcher had leased a proper shop beside the approved food section.

Brewers who previously produced mostly for local taverns were increasing output because construction workers had developed the apparently universal belief that hard labor justified drinking afterward.

Temporary inns became permanent businesses as merchants, craftsmen, teamsters, and travelers began staying overnight. Wagon services advertised transport between the market, construction districts, agricultural zones, and surrounding settlements.

One former refugee from Marden had purchased two carts using savings from months of construction wages and now earned more transporting other people’s materials than he had earned swinging a shovel.

Another refugee family operated a food stall that employed four relatives and one unrelated assistant.

Raymond recognized faces from winter everywhere. That affected him more than the shops themselves. People who had once stood in food lines carrying ration tokens were now standing on the opposite side of counters accepting payment.

Others remained laborers, but they were customers as well as workers. A man could spend the morning laying drainage stone, receive wages, purchase bread, pay a tailor, order a stool from a carpenter, and still carry money home.

His spending became someone else’s income. That person spent again. Coins moved through Althoff repeatedly instead of entering a warehouse and remaining there until the government distributed them.

The transformation was visible in apprentices most of all. Established craftsmen simply could not satisfy demand alone.

Blacksmiths trained teenagers to handle simpler forge work. Carpenters taught refugees how to prepare standard joints, frames, shutters, and furniture. Bakers hired assistants.

Wheelwrights trained boys and girls who had previously possessed no specialized trade. Tailors expanded workshops.

Leatherworkers divided basic tasks among learners while masters handled difficult pieces. The city was not merely producing goods. It was producing people capable of producing goods, which Raymond suspected might eventually be more valuable.

By afternoon, he reached the Trade counter beside the Central Market and found Ysabel reviewing permits. Daily stalls paid their rents. Longer-term shop owners paid shop leases according to schedule.

Workshops on government property paid separate leases. Visiting traders purchased permits and caravan spaces. Commercial users of designated resources paid established fees. None of those payments represented enormous wealth individually, but they arrived constantly.

A potter renewed a stall permit. A carpenter submitted workshop rent. A food seller paid for a covered market position. Each payment removed only a small portion from commercial activity before sending it into the Territorial Treasury.

Raymond leaned against the counter while Ysabel finished stamping a permit. ”Do you know what I just spent half the day doing?”

”Judging by your reputation, avoiding paperwork.” Ysabel said.

”Following my own money.” Raymond rolled his eyes at him and said.

Ysabel looked at Lily.

Lily nodded solemnly. ”It was strange.”

Raymond explained what he had noticed. House Althoff paid construction wages. Workers spent those wages at businesses. Businesses paid suppliers. Suppliers paid craftsmen, laborers, transporters, farmers, and merchants.

Those people spent their earnings again. Eventually portions returned to Althoff through market rents, leases, permits, resource fees, warehouse charges, and trade activity. The same gold could support transaction after transaction before any fraction reached the Treasury.

That evening, Raymond asked Alaric for expenditure and revenue ledgers covering the construction period. The numbers confirmed what the streets had shown him. House Althoff remained the largest source of investment by an enormous margin.

Roads, housing, warehouses, wages, tools, defenses, and infrastructure were expensive. Yet the money was not simply vanishing. Much of it remained inside Althoff’s growing economy, changing hands repeatedly while creating goods, services, jobs, businesses, and eventually public revenue.

Raymond remembered winter, when distributing food had been necessary because people had nothing. He would do it again without hesitation if survival demanded it. But welfare kept people alive. It did not automatically create an economy.

This was different.

He had paid a man to build a road. That man had bought bread. The baker bought flour. The miller bought grain. The farmer repaired his plow. The blacksmith bought charcoal. The charcoal burner bought boots.

The cobbler paid his shop lease. Somewhere along that chain, part of Raymond’s original expenditure had returned to the Territorial Treasury after supporting half a dozen livelihoods.

And tomorrow, the coins would move again.

Raymond closed the ledger with a smile.

Althoff was learning how to make money circulate.
