Boundless Family Upgrades For The Deadbeat Lord

The improvements to Althoff’s roads had barely begun producing results when another consequence of the County’s accelerated development became apparent.

Merchants were arriving faster than the Administration could process their applications.

By midmorning, the Central Market was crowded with traders unloading merchandise, negotiating storage arrangements, and inspecting available commercial premises.

Some had traveled to Althoff before, while others were visiting for the first time after hearing about the enormous construction program undertaken by the newly elevated Count Raymond von Althoff.

For merchants, a growing city represented something far more interesting than an impressive collection of buildings.

It represented customers.

Raymond discovered the extent of their interest when Ysabel Merrow arrived at his study carrying a thick bundle of commercial applications.

”Your Excellency, I believe our construction program has attracted more attention than we anticipated,” Ysabel announced, placing the documents upon his desk. ”We’ve received applications from timber suppliers, tool merchants, food wholesalers, transport contractors, and several trading companies interested in establishing permanent operations.”

Raymond examined the stack with an amused expression. ”Apparently, spending money is an excellent way to make new friends.”

”Particularly when those friends intend to earn some of it,” Ysabel replied with a knowing smile. ”However, their interest could prove extremely beneficial if we negotiate carefully.”

She explained that Althoff’s demand for construction materials had created opportunities for merchants who previously considered the territory too small to justify regular visits. Timber dealers offered seasoned lumber, blacksmiths proposed bulk supplies of tools and fittings, and food merchants wanted contracts supplying the expanding workforce.

Meanwhile, smaller traders were discovering opportunities in manufactured goods, household supplies, clothing, and other products needed by the growing population.

”That’s encouraging,” Raymond observed. ”But I assume there’s a problem hidden somewhere in those applications.”

Ysabel nodded. ”Several, my Lord. Some merchants are offering reasonable terms, while others appear convinced that our construction program has made us desperate enough to accept almost any price. A few have even requested exclusive supply privileges.”

Raymond’s expression cooled slightly. ”Exclusive privileges? For what?”

”Timber, iron fittings, and certain imported construction materials,” Ysabel answered. ”One merchant proposed supplying all our metal fasteners for the next three years, provided we agreed not to purchase them elsewhere.”

Raymond shook his head immediately. ”Absolutely not. We’re trying to strengthen our supply chains, not place the entire city’s construction schedule in one merchant’s hands.”

”That was my assessment as well, Your Excellency,” Ysabel replied. ”I rejected the proposed exclusivity but requested revised offers. Competition should help us obtain better prices.”

Raymond leaned back thoughtfully. The merchants’ arrival demonstrated how rapidly Althoff’s economy was changing. Only months earlier, the territory had struggled to convince traders that its markets were worth visiting. Now merchants were competing for access to its growing commercial opportunities.

The difference was remarkable.

Nevertheless, he understood that attracting merchants was only the beginning. Maintaining reliable trade required fair regulations, dependable transportation, secure storage, and contracts that both sides considered worthwhile.

”Arrange a meeting with the most promising suppliers,” Raymond instructed. ”I want to hear what they can provide, how consistently they can deliver, and what they’re expecting in return.”

Ysabel inclined her head. ”I’ve already invited several representatives to the Commercial Hall this afternoon, my Lord. Edmund Vale from the Golden Road Merchant Association will also attend.”

Raymond smiled. ”Excellent. It’s reassuring to know you’re several steps ahead of me.”

”Someone has to be, Your Excellency,” Ysabel answered politely, although the amusement in her eyes betrayed her satisfaction.

That afternoon, the Commercial Hall hosted one of its largest merchant gatherings since the establishment of Althoff’s new administrative departments.

Edmund Vale, manager of the Golden Road Merchant Association’s Valmere branch, occupied a prominent seat among the visitors. Beside him sat several independent merchants representing timber, ironware, textiles, preserved foods, and transport services.

Raymond entered accompanied by Ysabel and Alaric, exchanging greetings before taking his seat.

”Count Raymond, congratulations once again on your elevation,” Edmund said warmly. ”The Golden Road Merchant Association has followed Althoff’s development with considerable interest. I must admit, even our most optimistic projections underestimated how quickly your territory would expand.”

Raymond returned his smile. ”Then I hope your association is prepared to keep pace with us, Master Edmund. We’ve developed an unfortunate habit of needing more supplies than we originally planned.”

Edmund chuckled. ”A profitable habit from a merchant’s perspective, Your Excellency. We’ve already increased the frequency of our caravans and allocated additional warehouse space for goods destined for Althoff.”

The discussion began with the County’s immediate requirements. Ysabel presented carefully organized estimates covering construction tools, metal fittings, seasoned timber, food supplies, and specialized equipment unavailable through local production.

Rather than requesting everything from a single association, she divided the requirements into categories and invited merchants to submit proposals based upon their capabilities.

A timber merchant named Conrad Weiss spoke first. ”Your Excellency, my company can supply seasoned beams and boards from workshops farther west. However, the quantity you’re requesting would require advance arrangements with our producers.”

”How much advance notice?” Raymond asked, examining the merchant’s preliminary offer.

”Several weeks for ordinary orders, my Lord,” Conrad replied. ”Larger deliveries may require longer, depending upon the timber specifications.”

Raymond nodded. ”Then we’ll need scheduled deliveries rather than waiting until our construction teams exhaust their supplies. Mistress Ysabel will coordinate the quantities with our Logistics Department.”

Another merchant, a blacksmith supplier named Garran Feld, proposed regular shipments of nails, hinges, brackets, and other metal fittings.

Roderic Vann had previously identified those items as persistent bottlenecks for local construction, particularly because Althoff’s own smithies were already occupied producing tools and equipment.

”Your Excellency, I can arrange deliveries every fortnight if the quantities remain reasonably consistent,” Garran explained. ”But iron prices fluctuate, and I cannot guarantee a fixed price indefinitely.”

Raymond considered the offer. ”Then propose a pricing arrangement with reasonable adjustment provisions. I’m willing to pay fairly for dependable supplies, but I won’t authorize unexplained increases every time a caravan arrives.”

Garran nodded respectfully. ”That would be acceptable, my Lord. I’ll prepare the details for Mistress Ysabel.”

As negotiations continued, Raymond noticed that the smaller merchants were particularly interested in Althoff’s expanding population.

A preserved-food supplier wanted to establish regular deliveries for construction workers and traveling merchants. A cloth trader requested permission to rent a permanent market stall, while another merchant proposed opening a workshop producing inexpensive household goods.

These proposals were less dramatic than the enormous construction contracts, but Raymond recognized their importance.

A city could not thrive upon stone and timber alone.

Its residents needed food, clothing, household necessities, and businesses capable of providing ordinary services. Every new workshop or merchant establishment strengthened the commercial network supporting Althoff’s population.

”Provided you follow our commercial regulations and pay the established fees, you’re welcome to conduct business here,” Raymond told the assembled traders. ”Althoff intends to become a place where honest merchants can prosper. What I won’t tolerate is fraud, deliberate shortages, or attempts to exploit our residents.”

Edmund smiled approvingly. ”A sensible policy, Your Excellency. Predictable regulations are often more valuable to merchants than temporary privileges.”

By the meeting’s conclusion, Ysabel had secured several promising preliminary agreements. The Golden Road Merchant Association would increase scheduled shipments of specialized goods, while independent merchants would compete for selected supply contracts.

Alaric ensured that no agreement bypassed the Treasury’s approval procedures, and Corvin would review delivery arrangements before final quantities were confirmed.

Raymond also authorized additional commercial storage allocations, provided they did not interfere with the ongoing Warehouse District expansion.

The results pleased him considerably.

Althoff was beginning to attract commerce not merely because Raymond was spending money, but because merchants believed the territory possessed a profitable future.

That distinction mattered.

Later that evening, Ysabel returned to the manor with a summary of the negotiations.

”Your Excellency, several merchants have already submitted revised proposals,” she reported. ”The Golden Road Association is particularly interested in establishing a longer-term commercial relationship. Edmund believes Althoff could eventually become an important distribution center for this part of Zulor.”

Raymond examined the documents thoughtfully. ”That’s precisely the direction I want us moving. Our roads, warehouses, and industries should support trade beyond our own immediate needs.”

Ysabel nodded. ”There’s another matter worth considering, my Lord. Our growing commercial activity is attracting attention from neighboring territories. Some nobles may view Althoff as a valuable trading partner.”

”And others will probably decide we’re stealing their merchants,” Raymond remarked.

”Quite possibly, Your Excellency,” Ysabel admitted with a small smile. ”Although cooperation would be considerably more profitable than resentment.”

Before Raymond could respond, a servant entered carrying a sealed letter.

Alaric, who had been reviewing correspondence nearby, accepted the envelope and examined its crest. His expression changed immediately.

”Your Excellency, this has arrived through an official courier,” Alaric announced. ”The seal belongs to House Marwick.”

Raymond raised an eyebrow. ”House Marwick?”

”Countess Eveline Marwick, my Lord,” Alaric explained. ”She governs one of the neighboring Counties.”

Raymond accepted the letter and broke the seal.

The message was formal, courteous, and surprisingly direct. Countess Eveline congratulated him upon his elevation and expressed considerable interest in Althoff’s expanding economy.

More importantly, she proposed opening discussions concerning commercial cooperation between their territories.

Raymond finished reading before looking toward Ysabel.

”Well,” he remarked with a growing smile, ”it appears our merchants aren’t the only ones who have noticed Althoff’s opportunities.”

And with that single letter, the County’s expanding commercial ambitions had begun attracting the attention of its noble neighbors.
