Boundless Family Upgrades For The Deadbeat Lord

The shortage of construction materials had become the latest headache threatening Raymond’s ambitious plans for Althoff City.

By the following morning, the problem had grown serious enough that Corvin Rusk was already waiting outside the Administrative Hall when Raymond arrived.

The logistics officer carried three ledgers beneath one arm, while Kael Ormond, the County’s Geological Surveyor, stood beside him with a leather case containing maps and geological samples.

”Your Excellency, we’ve completed a preliminary assessment of our available resources,” Corvin announced after greeting him. ”Master Kael believes we can increase local production considerably, although doing so will require additional workers, equipment, and transportation arrangements.”

Raymond glanced toward the bulging leather case. ”Judging by the amount of paperwork you’ve brought, I assume this isn’t going to be a simple matter.”

Kael smiled faintly. ”Natural resources rarely arrange themselves according to our construction schedules, my Lord. Unfortunately, we must work with whatever the land provides.”

Inside the meeting chamber, Alaric had already prepared a large territorial map. Mara Kest and Roderic Vann joined them shortly afterward, followed by representatives from the Logistics and Natural Resources Departments.

Ormond began by marking the locations of Althoff’s existing material sources. The western quarry lay approximately twelve kilometers from the city, while the managed northern forests supplied most of the timber used by local carpenters and construction teams.

Several clay deposits had also been identified during earlier surveys, although none had yet been developed for commercial production.

”Our immediate difficulty isn’t the complete absence of materials,” Ormond explained, placing a stone sample upon the table. ”It’s the rate at which we can extract, prepare, and transport them. The quarry contains substantial workable stone, but its current operations were established to satisfy much smaller construction requirements.”

Mara leaned forward to examine the marked quarry roads. ”Can production increase without opening another excavation site?”

”Yes, Mistress Mara,” Ormond answered. ”There are additional workable sections within the existing quarry. However, expanding extraction will require experienced stonecutters, improved loading arrangements, and more equipment. We must also reinforce certain working areas before increasing activity.”

Raymond considered the explanation. The quarry had already become one of Althoff’s most important assets, supplying foundations, drainage channels, and public buildings. Expanding its output seemed considerably more practical than purchasing every additional stone block from distant merchants.

”Prepare a controlled expansion proposal,” Raymond instructed. ”I want higher production, but not at the expense of worker safety. Include the cost of additional tools, supervisors, and transport equipment.”

Corvin opened his ledger immediately. ”Transportation will be particularly important, Your Excellency. Even if the quarry doubles its output, those additional stones won’t reach the city without enough wagons and drivers.”

”Then coordinate with the quarry supervisors before purchasing anything,” Raymond replied. ”There’s no point increasing extraction if the finished stone spends weeks waiting beside the road.”

Their attention shifted toward the northern forests, where timber production faced a different set of limitations. Unlike stone, trees could not simply be extracted indefinitely without damaging the territory’s future resources.

Ormond explained that the managed forest contained several suitable harvesting areas, but expanding operations would require careful selection of mature trees and protection of younger growth.

The sawmill could process additional timber, although its workforce and transport arrangements would need strengthening.

”We should establish annual harvesting limits based on proper surveys,” Kael recommended. ”If we cut indiscriminately to satisfy immediate construction demand, we’ll eventually destroy the very resource we’re trying to develop.”

Raymond nodded firmly. ”Agreed. I don’t intend to turn our forests into empty fields just because we’re building a city. Increase harvesting where it’s sustainable, and establish replanting arrangements alongside the expansion.”

Alaric recorded the instruction while Corvin calculated the likely requirements for moving logs from the forest to the sawmill. Mara also requested priority allocations of seasoned timber for structural work, explaining that freshly cut wood could not always replace properly prepared materials.

”Some projects can use newly processed timber,” Mara explained, ”but important structural components require suitable quality and preparation. If we rush everything, we’ll create buildings that begin developing problems before their occupants have finished moving in.”

Raymond sighed. ”Apparently, every material has its own personality.”

”Wood is considerably less troublesome than certain administrators, Your Excellency,” Mara replied, glancing toward Corvin.

The logistics officer looked offended. ”I would appreciate it if Construction stopped requesting materials that haven’t arrived yet.”

”Then Logistics should stop promising deliveries before confirming the wagons exist,” Mara countered, although the amusement in her expression softened the complaint.

Raymond allowed their exchange to continue briefly before redirecting the discussion toward the remaining resources.

Ormond opened another map, revealing several marked locations southeast of the city. ”These are the clay deposits identified during our earlier surveys, my Lord. Initial examination suggests that some contain material suitable for ordinary pottery and potentially construction bricks. However, we haven’t yet established which deposits will produce the strongest finished products.”

Raymond studied the markings with renewed interest. Stone was durable, but properly manufactured bricks could provide a practical alternative for many buildings, walls, drainage structures, and other construction projects.

”How much clay is available?” he asked.

”We haven’t completed a comprehensive estimate,” Ormond admitted. ”The deposits appear promising, but I would rather provide reliable measurements after additional excavation than offer an impressive figure that proves incorrect.”

”Good,” Raymond replied approvingly. ”I’d prefer an inconvenient truth over a convenient fantasy. What would we need to begin evaluating brick production?”

Roderic who had been examining the samples, answered before Kael could respond. ”Controlled firing trials, Your Excellency. We need to prepare clay mixtures, shape test pieces, dry them properly, and fire them under different conditions. The results will tell us whether the material can produce durable bricks and roofing tiles.”

Raymond turned toward him. ”Can your workshops handle the experiments?”

”Small trials, certainly,” Roderic replied. ”Commercial production would require dedicated facilities and workers familiar with firing clay. I can supervise the initial evaluation with assistance from experienced potters, but we shouldn’t construct large kilns until we know which clay mixtures perform reliably.”

That sounded reasonable. Raymond authorized a modest testing budget and instructed Kael to arrange sample deliveries from the most promising deposits.

If the trials succeeded, the Administration could begin planning a local brickmaking industry rather than continuing to depend entirely upon stone and imported construction materials.

Their final subject was considerably less certain.

Roderic placed several dark, irregular stones upon the table. These were samples collected from an area where Kael’s surveyors had identified unusual rock formations containing possible iron-bearing material.

”These samples show indications of iron,” Roderic explained, turning one beneath the morning light. ”However, that doesn’t mean we’ve discovered a commercially useful deposit. We need to determine how much recoverable metal the rock contains and whether extracting it would justify the expense.”

Raymond examined the samples with interest. A reliable local iron supply could eventually benefit blacksmiths, toolmakers, construction teams, and the military. Unfortunately, excitement would not transform an uncertain deposit into a functioning mine.

”What do you recommend?” he asked.

”Further sampling and small-scale evaluation,” Roderic answered. ”If the material proves promising, we can investigate extraction requirements. Until then, I advise against committing substantial funds or announcing that Althoff possesses an iron mine.”

”Agreed,” Raymond replied. ”We’ll investigate properly. In the meantime, continue purchasing the iron our workshops need through established merchants.”

By midday, the meeting had produced several new directives.

The quarry would receive a controlled expansion plan, the northern forests would operate under revised harvesting arrangements, and Logistics would establish dedicated transport schedules for major material sources.

Clay evaluation would proceed immediately, while the iron-bearing rock remained under investigation.

Raymond also ordered the Departments to prepare long-term supply agreements between local producers and public construction teams.

His intention was to create dependable material supply chains rather than forcing every foreman to compete for whatever happened to arrive at the market.

”Althoff cannot become a proper city if every construction project depends entirely upon merchants arriving from somewhere else,”

Raymond told the assembled officials. ”Trade will remain important, but we should produce as much of our essential building material locally as our resources reasonably allow.”

Alaric closed his ledger and nodded. ”That will require considerable coordination, Your Excellency, but it should strengthen the County’s economy while reducing future supply disruptions.”

The first clay samples reached Roderic’s workshop later that afternoon. Working alongside two experienced potters, his assistants prepared several small test pieces, carefully recording their mixtures before placing them into a furnace adapted for preliminary firing.

Raymond visited briefly but left the craftsmen to their work after Roderic explained that meaningful results would require patience.

By evening, the first fired samples had cooled enough for inspection.

Roderic examined one of the hardened pieces, tapped its surface, and studied the result with growing interest. It was far from a finished construction brick, but the material had survived firing without crumbling.

He turned toward his assistants with a satisfied expression.

”Prepare another batch,” Roderic instructed. ”This time, we’ll test larger pieces and adjust the mixture. I believe we may have something worth developing.”

For the first time since the material shortages began, Althoff possessed a promising answer to one of its greatest construction problems.

The County might soon be making its own bricks.
