This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Du Heng’s words, coupled with the shifting gazes of the surrounding crowd, caused the girl on the stage’s expression to change abruptly.

Seeing the eyes already fixed on them, she decisively said, ”Hmph! What right do you have to stop us from leaving? You even incited the ordinary people to join you! Are you aware that your actions have violated the law and are infringing on our personal freedom? We can sue you for illegal detention!”

The girl spoke with such self-righteousness that Du Heng was quite impressed. She remained calm under pressure, offered a logical rebuttal, and even managed to intimidate these law-ignorant ordinary people.

After finishing her speech, the girl jumped off the stage. ”Let’s go,” she declared.

Du Heng’s gaze turned cold. Watching the elderly people who already clutched the medicine in their hands, an uncontrollable surge of anger welled up inside him. ”Doctor Shi, call the police! Call Director Gong! There are people selling fake medicine here!”

”Okay.” The Pharmacy Doctor, also furious, glared at the girl, immediately pulling out his mobile phone to call Gong Daoyang.

When the girl who had jumped off the stage saw the Pharmacy Doctor actually calling the police, she couldn’t help but quicken her pace, trying to push through the crowd. Her companions did the same, all trying to squeeze their way out.

”Fellow villagers! They are a group of swindlers! There’s no such thing as a medicine that can eradicate hypertension! I am a doctor, the Dean of the Health Clinic. I wouldn’t deceive you! If they get away, your hard-earned money, the money your children earn working tirelessly away from home, the money for your children’s education—it will all be stolen by them!”

The moment Du Heng finished shouting, several of the young people quickened their attempts to push through the crowd.

However, these individuals had underestimated what several thousand yuan meant to these farmers.

For the sake of their health, if their family’s finances could somehow manage it, they would grit their teeth and spend the money.

They invested in their health not only because they cherished life, but more so because they wanted to work a few more years to help their children. Whether it was working the fields or taking care of grandchildren at home, they tried their best to be less of a burden on their offspring.

Now, hearing Du Heng declare it was fake medicine, every one of them glared viciously at these young people.

Don’t be fooled by their youth; these young men and women were no match for the surrounding crowd of fifty and sixty-year-olds. The sheer physical strength of the villagers alone was enough to easily overpower them.

Watching the flustered girl, Du Heng jumped off the stage and approached her, once again carefully sizing up this girl who had surprised him so much.

”If I’m not mistaken, your name is Wu Zhouzhou, isn’t it?” Du Heng asked softly.

Hearing Du Heng’s words, the girl’s eyes flickered almost imperceptibly, but then she immediately grew flustered again, her gaze darting around as she searched for an escape route.

”Not going to talk?” A stiff smile touched the corners of Du Heng’s mouth. ”Three months ago, when we busted your recruitment scam in Mubangou, you were timid, cowardly, and utterly helpless. But seeing you again three months later, you’ve become so polished. You deeply understand the psychology of the elderly, accurately exploiting their weakness for ’good deals.’”

Du Heng looked at Wu Zhouzhou, his eyes holding a mixture of admiration and regret.

He admired how this fledgling, fresh from the nest, had transformed into a seasoned ’elite’ in just three short months. To achieve such a status, besides the necessary training, her own aptitude and hard work were undoubtedly crucial. What a pity that such an ’elite,’ such a talented individual adept at learning and adapting, had chosen the path of a con artist. Moreover, witnessing Wu Zhouzhou’s performance on stage today, it was clear she no longer felt the initial moral restraints. In other words, she had completely abandoned her conscience.

Wu Zhouzhou’s expression suddenly turned aggrieved. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she adopted a pitiful, damsel-in-distress demeanor. ”Doctor Du, I was wrong! Please, let me go! I promise I’ll turn over a new leaf. And I’ll refund all the money to the villagers right now, every last cent. How about that?”

As she spoke, Wu Zhouzhou’s hand naturally found Du Heng’s, her touch soft and delicate.

Witnessing Wu Zhouzhou’s abrupt shift in demeanor and her tearful, pleading expression, Du Heng mentally upgraded his assessment of the girl by another two levels.

A truly brilliant performance! This girl is definitely a talent! What a waste!

Du Heng wasn’t the type of man to be easily swayed by a woman. Besides, if one were to purely compare looks and figure, Wu Zhouzhou was a notch or two below Wang Shuqiu.

From the warmth and the damp, slick feeling of Wu Zhouzhou’s palm, Du Heng knew the girl was genuinely panicked.

He gently withdrew his hand and wiped it on the brown T-shirt of the nearby Pharmacy Doctor.

”Dean, what are you doing?”

”I’m wearing a white shirt; it’s not convenient!”

The Pharmacy Doctor shot Du Heng a speechless look and slowly edged away. Once he had put some distance between himself and Du Heng, he resumed explaining the situation to Gong Daoyang.

Nothing more needed to be said. From Du Heng’s simple action of wiping his hand, Wu Zhouzhou understood his decision.

Instantly, she dropped the act. Her eyes darted, and she lunged, trying to push past a relatively frail-looking older woman.

I have to escape! If I’m caught, I know exactly what I’m in for. Last time, at least we had the cover of offering physical examinations. But this time, we were genuinely selling fake medicine. Although our ’medicine’ wouldn’t cause any physical harm, with a price tag of several thousand yuan each, the sheer number of people involved, and the amount already sold, a fraud charge was unavoidable.

I’m only 23, a recent college graduate! My life has just begun! I can’t just give up and wait to be caught!

At Wu Zhouzhou’s sudden move, her companions also sprang into action, preparing to gamble on an escape.

However, they had underestimated these people who had spent a lifetime doing farm work. Though these villagers looked lean, they possessed immense strength and surprisingly tough bones.

The only things that could truly bring these villagers down were debilitating illness or the crushing weight of poverty.

These young people had also overestimated themselves, looking down on these folks over fifty simply because of their own youth.

But for individuals who had been studying since the age of three, were completely detached from manual labor, and might drop dead from running a thousand meters, their frail physiques were, in the eyes of these uncles and aunts, no different from absolute weaklings.

Subduing them was even simpler than corralling a pig or catching a chicken.

The moment they made their move, cries of ”OOF! OUCH!” immediately rang out.

It was as if they had all run into an iron wall. These villagers, who appeared to be showing their age, couldn’t be budged, let alone pushed aside.

Seeing that escape was hopeless, Wu Zhouzhou suddenly dropped to her knees with a THUD in front of Du Heng. ”Doctor Du! President Du! Please, let me go! I’ll definitely be a good person! I’ll never cheat anyone again! If I get arrested, I’ll have a criminal record! My life will be over!”

Du Heng let out a long sigh. Considering Wu Zhouzhou’s current act, just how many people must she have defrauded to reach this level of skill? A moment’s thought told him the number couldn’t be small. And that, in turn, meant the total sum of money involved was likely to be enormous.
