This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Chapter 231: 231 It’s hard to fathom people’s minds

Others might not know what happened to Xiao Ying, but Du Heng knew very well.

Du Heng glanced back at the few people behind him. ”So you agreed to compensate because of this?”

They all nodded in unison, and Zhou Yixian said softly, ”We had no choice. They came with the Death Certificate. If we didn’t agree to their demands, once they sued, you and Xiao Hu, as well as the hospital, would all have to take responsibility. Even your and Xiao Hu’s practice qualifications might be revoked. We did it for your sake.”

”Didn’t you request an autopsy?”

Zhou Yixian shook his head helplessly. ”They’ve already cremated the body.”

Du Heng sneered at Xiao Ying’s weeping mother. What a calculating move, cremating the body, leaving no way to verify the facts.

It seems I misunderstood Zhou Yixian and the section chief of their Medical Affairs Department.

”I remember that in cases of unnatural death, the Police Bureau opens an investigation. Didn’t you go to the Police station to ask? Do you just believe whatever they say?”

”Well, the person is gone now, and the body has been cremated. Of course, we have to believe whatever they say. Besides, if this whole thing blows up, the impact on the hospital will be too great.”

Du Heng was speechless. Scared of the impact, so you push the main responsibility onto us? In your dreams!

Turning his head to look at Xiao Ying’s still weeping, heartbroken mother, Du Heng felt disgusted.

”Ma’am, do you know why I was at the entrance of the college entrance examination that day?”

Xiao Ying’s mother looked up at Du Heng but said nothing.

The male lawyer beside her interrupted, ”My client doesn’t want to talk to you. You only need to say whether you accept mediation or not. If not, we’ll leave immediately.”

Du Heng glanced at the man. ”This is none of your business. Just shut up and listen.” He then continued, looking at Xiao Ying’s mother, ”My niece, Du Xuejing, was also taking the exam at that venue that day. Do you know why I went to save your daughter?”

The woman looked confused.

”Because my niece and your daughter were classmates, Hao Pengyou. She was the one who asked me to save your daughter.”

The woman still didn’t understand what Du Heng was trying to say, staring blankly at him.

Du Heng paused for a moment and looked deeply at Xiao Ying’s mother. ”Your daughter committed suicide by jumping off a building. As for the reason, there’s evidence in her classmates’ group chat—both witness testimony and physical evidence. Do I need to show it to you? Also, I believe there must be detailed records at the Police station. Shall we go there to verify it?”

As soon as Du Heng said this, everyone present was stunned.

Xiao Hu looked as if he’d seen a lifeline. Zhou Yixian and the section chief of the Medical Affairs Department stared, their eyes wide. ”Doctor Du, are you saying that the patient from the emergency rescue that day committed suicide by jumping off a building?”

Du Heng merely glanced at them without answering.

Actually, if they had been willing to trust their doctors, take responsibility for this matter, and stand up for them, the truth would surely have come out. But they didn’t. Instead, they pushed most of the blame onto me and the Emergency Doctor. For Municipal First Hospital, 100,000 yuan isn’t a large sum. They were only afraid that if the incident escalated, it would damage the hospital’s reputation. This, however, gave these people an opportunity to fish in troubled waters. Xiao Ying’s mother and her companions were banking on the fact that the hospital hadn’t followed proper procedures and that now, with no evidence to refute their claims, they could dare to demand an exorbitant 1.2 million yuan.

The woman had never expected that one of the people involved in the rescue that day would turn out to be her daughter’s classmate’s parent, someone who actually knew the true situation. This was completely unexpected.

She turned a pleading gaze to the man beside her.

This man, being her lawyer, must have known the full story from the start. He had intended to use their position to intimidate and take advantage of the chaos, but he hadn’t counted on running into someone who knew the truth.

As his thoughts raced, the man abruptly stood up. ”Everyone, we need to talk. Could you please step out for a moment?”

Du Heng, however, remained unmoved. He looked at the woman and said, ”I saved your daughter out of kindness, yet you intend to sue me. That’s truly disheartening.”

”Please step out first. I have matters to discuss with my client.”

Du Heng chuckled. ”No need to rush. You’ll have plenty of time to talk. Regardless of what you discuss, I’m calling the police now.”

The others looked at Du Heng in renewed shock, unable to comprehend his intentions.

”1.2 million yuan, ha! I certainly won’t accept mediation. Of course, you can go ahead and sue; I don’t care. But I am definitely calling the police right now. For 1.2 million yuan, charging you with extortion and getting you sentenced to ten or eight years shouldn’t be an issue. When the Police arrive, we’ll step out, and you’ll have plenty of time to talk, however you wish.”

With that, Du Heng actually took out his mobile phone, preparing to dial.

The woman opposite him grew frightened. She knew better than anyone else exactly what had happened.

Now, seeing Du Heng genuinely about to call the police and realizing there was no way to fish in troubled waters, she could no longer bother with tears. She quickly stood up. ”I’m sorry, I was misled by others and momentarily bewitched to do such a thing. I’m leaving now. I won’t sue you anymore.”

Muttering apologies, she scrambled from her seat and hurried away.

The so-called lawyer watched this unfold, completely stunned.

After freezing for three seconds, he snatched his belongings and chased after her.

Du Heng, too, was taken aback.

He was bluffing. He had no idea if extortion carried a sentence of ten or eight years, nor did he know if their actions legally constituted extortion. He was just trying to scare them. Still, it seemed Xiao Ying’s mother was remarkably decisive. Regarding today’s events, it was possible someone with ulterior motives had heard about my emergency rescue efforts and, knowing Xiao Ying’s incident occurred just three or four days later, saw a way to link the two. They might have then advised Xiao Ying’s mother to extort money. Of course, it could also have been Xiao Ying’s mother’s own idea. If Du Xuejing hadn’t been Xiao Ying’s classmate and known the truth, they might very well have succeeded in their deception today.

Now that the parties involved had left and were no longer pursuing the matter, everyone remaining looked at each other in dismay.

They had initially thought they would have to spend money to avert disaster, but it had all ended up as a farce.

However, while they no longer had to pay, the atmosphere was now incredibly awkward.

The section chief of the Medical Affairs Department and Zhou Yixian wanted to say something, but for a moment, neither knew what.

After a two-second pause, Zhou Yixian was the first to break the silence. ”Hahaha, so Doctor Du had evidence all along! What a false alarm. I’ve long heard of Doctor Du’s esteemed reputation, and today I finally have the pleasure of meeting you in person. How about we go to my office for a chat, Doctor Du?”

Du Heng reined in his scattered thoughts and looked at the three people beside him. ”I’m truly sorry, but I have something urgent I must get back to. Let’s talk another time when we have the chance.”

With that, he turned and walked straight out.

He had absolutely no desire to engage in pleasantries here. Perhaps he once might have, but not anymore.
