193: Chapter 193 The Day the Rain FallsYe Nanxing gazed quietly at the distant horizon.

The clouds, originally dry and cracked like lava, were now slowly ”collapsing”—not the kind of collapse where they are swept away by the wind, but a layered sinking, like paper dampened by water.

The color had changed, too.

From scorching white and red, it gradually seeped into a circle of deep gray, like rust staining the sky.

It wasn’t an overcast day.

It was—after the high temperature reached its limit, the air, in a state of frantic twisting, was attempting to find its ”equilibrium point” again.

Ye Nanxing slowly withdrew her gaze and said in a deep voice:

”After returning to the Base, everyone is to undergo a physical examination immediately.”

”Take off your outer layers, and send the high-temperature suits to the decontamination room.”

”Activate the air purification towers, and run all main cycles ahead of schedule.”

”I want to confirm one thing—”

”Has the wind... started to change?”

Chu Yunting’s pupils constricted: ”You mean...”

Ye Nanxing said calmly: ”’Extreme Heat’ is not the end.”

”It might be... about to transition.”

The people in the vehicle instantly fell silent.

And that expanse of deep gray cloud sea about to press down from the horizon was like a new ”Apocalypse chapter”—

slowly drawing back its curtain.

The sensors on the outer wall of Tianlang Mountain Base were the first to capture that imperceptible change.

[Surface air pressure dropping; air humidity rising]

Immediately after—

”Hiss—”

The first water droplet smashed onto the metal surface of the high-temperature warning sign.

Instantly, steam rose, white mist swirling, as if boiling water had been poured into a frying pan.

Zhao Wei was standing on the top level of the northwest guard post at that moment; he subconsciously looked up, and the water droplet landed right on his neck.

”...Wait, what is this sound?”

He frowned and wiped it away, but his nose suddenly twitched as an extremely unfamiliar, damp, and fresh scent entered his nostrils—

Water.

It was water!

Not a leaking pipe, not a crack in the water tank.

But real, falling from the sky, rain!

”It’s raining!” he roared suddenly.

”It’s raining!!”

The guard posts on the perimeter of the Base instantly erupted.

People rushed out from the ventilation shafts, looking up at the sky; some ran while shouting, ”Come out quickly! The heavens are still alive!”

Some knelt on the ground, scooping up the rainwater dripping from the tin eaves with both hands and fiercely wiping it on their faces: ”It’s cold! It’s actually cold—!”

Several kitchen workers at the entrance of the main cafeteria threw their pot lids on the ground, rushed out, and stood in the rain, looking up and laughing heartily.

Even the usually composed Maintenance Team 2 was clinging to the ventilation windows, gazing outside, their eyes filled with a near-manic longing:

”Is it really not a water tank bursting?”

”Is it really rain?! We lived to see the rain!!!”

The entire Base was like a punctured pressure cooker, emotions instantly erupting.

The torture of high temperatures, water shortages, the sensation of skin cracking, and the despair of having nowhere to hide, suppressed for nearly half a year, found a release at this moment.

—As if humanity had been forgiven by this world.

But.

On the second floor of the defense tower, Ye Nanxing stood quietly, unmoving.

She gazed at the sky—

The clouds were not normal.

The density was too thick, the color too heavy, a mix of dark brown and deep gray, like some kind of ”churning chemical waste gas.”

The raindrops were dense, and their landing speed was faster than normal.

The air was even permeated with a... ”acrid taste” that shouldn’t belong to water vapor.

When the first drop of rain fell, no one realized the problem.

It hit the guard tower railing with a soft ”hiss,” as if water vapor was evaporating.

The second and third drops followed, falling on the ground and on people.

Five minutes later—

The first batch of base members who had rushed out of the barracks, full of joy, began to run back wildly.

”Ah—!!”

”My face... it hurts! It’s burning—!”

”It’s the rain! This rain isn’t right!”

Lin Xiao rushed out of the main control room, and the scene before him made his expression darken:

Several combat personnel had flushed cheeks, their exposed arm skin covered in dense red spots, eyes swollen, lips cracked, and some were even experiencing temporary blurred vision.

”Sis! This isn’t normal rain!” a young soldier shouted at Ye Nanxing, his face pale and eyes brimming with tears.

”This fucking thing is—sulfuric acid needle rain!”

”My face hurts like it’s being pricked by needles!”

”I can’t even open my eyes!”

She narrowed her eyes.

”Qingyan.”

She pressed the communication button.

”Get a piece of zinc, calcium powder, and some pH test strips, quickly.”

Shen Qingyan responded quickly from the other end: ”Received.”

Inside the medical laboratory building, Shen Qingyan, wearing gloves, swiftly injected the rainwater sample into the analysis tank.

The instrument ran at high speed, and the data on the screen jumped wildly:

[pH value: 3.5]

[Nitric acid residual concentration: 264mg/L (6.8 times over the limit)]

[Aerosol reaction: High risk]

[Corrosion level: Light burn grade]

[Inhalable particulate matter concentration: Critical!]

She took a deep breath, suppressed her dizziness, and uttered:

”It’s acid rain.”

”Light burn type. Preliminary judgment is that it’s atmospheric pollution residue settlement caused by the heat pressure belt collapse.”

”Short-term contact won’t be fatal, but long-term exposure—”

”will cause skin burns, keratitis, throat edema, and even pulmonary alveoli ulceration.”

”Especially for people with wounds or inflammation—it will corrode directly into the bloodstream.”

Lin Xiao’s voice was firm:

”All field personnel, retreat immediately!”

”Activate humidification ventilation plan number three immediately!”

”Close all outdoor activity windows and ventilation strips! Everyone must wear protective masks and thick rubber suits!”

Shen Qingyan followed up immediately: ”Water purification tower, close the drainage channels immediately and switch to the ’closed water storage circulation’ system!”

”Rainwater must absolutely not be mixed into the drinking system!”

The Base immediately sprang into action, alarm sounds piercing the sky.

Combat teams, medical teams, and defense engineering teams moved at top speed to seal hatches, collect rainwater samples, and check wounded personnel who had been exposed.

—The entire Tianlang Mountain responded as quickly as if it had been set on fire.

Zhang Tianjin had already rushed back from the crowd, howling as he applied ice-salt spray to his face:

”Damn it, my face feels like I just kissed a welder—it hurts so much my own mother wouldn’t recognize me!”

Zhao Wei tore off half his shirt and threw it into the cleaning tank, scrubbing his shoulders frantically:

”How is this rain even more poisonous than the sky!”

Ye Nanxing stood before the communication terminal, her tone calm yet clear:

”Attention all personnel—”

”From now on, treat all rainwater as a ’high-risk environmental factor’.”

”Acid-heat superposition is the ’second stage’ of the Extreme Heat period.”

”It’s not a cooling down.”

”It’s an escalation.”

She whispered, looking at the gray-red sky:

”The heavens haven’t let us off.”

”They have just—switched to a different method to keep killing.”

The sky was gray and heavy, the rain like needles.

At the beginning of the acid rain, the surface of the upper construction area of Lanyan Shelter was still as scorching hot as molten iron.

Even in the early morning, the temperature was nearly 78°C, and there were basically no areas of human activity during the day.

The daily operations of the entire Shelter had long since sunk underground, and the surface—was just a ”skeleton” for maintaining communication and ventilation.

When the rainwater first began to fall, it seemed like a ”long-lost gift.”

Drops fell onto the surface of the high-rise buildings, pattering, but did not immediately cause damage.

A guard tower soldier stood at the observation post, wearing an insulating hood, watching the sky crack open from afar, muttering softly:

”This rain... it wouldn’t be ’life-saving rain’, would it?”

However, five minutes later—

They realized it was an illusion.
