Our Family Has Fallen

Chapter 1179: Chapter 649: Eerie Surveillance

”Because she wasn’t doing it for money or any other reason; she simply wanted to challenge Hamlet’s police.

She failed, but this reason might inspire some imitators. Those professional thieves might see Hamlet as a challenge or a competition.

We can win many times, but as long as we fail once, the price is that our previous successes become meaningless and instead serve as a stepping stone for the other party.

Moreover, even if we catch them in the end, what’s the use?

We can’t publicly sentence them to death for stealing these things, and imprisoning them would take up valuable prison resources and cost money to keep them.

If we let them do labor reform, you’ve seen these guys’ strength; those prison guards simply can’t match them.

These chains mean nothing to them; a piece of wire, an iron plate can unlock them, and high walls mean nothing.

We can’t waste resources on these guys. I’d find dying here bothersome, so handle this matter discreetly, it can’t be public.”

It’s a very abstract explanation, and naturally, the reason is even more abstract in reality.

With someone like Audrey, you’re bound to have more, and Lance doesn’t want those lunatics to target Hamlet.

”Why don’t we just get rid of her?”

”Why is this world so chaotic? It’s precisely because there are no rules.” Lance shook his head in disapproval, ”The reason laws are laws is because of the word ”fairness.” They limit not only them but us as well, which is why they deserve everyone’s respect.”

Lance felt that rule by man was too abstract, as people are not quantifiable. Those who wish to implement rule by man should experience this world of despair.

The most honest portrayal of rule by man is — I damn well do whatever I want!

The nobles do whatever they want, which directly brings great chaos, and for regular people being killed by these guys is no different from slaughtering a chicken.

Even slaughtering a chicken would require payment, killing someone demands gratitude to the lord.

The moral standards of this world have to rely on religion to back them up; it’s unimaginable how far they have fallen.

Lance detests this chaotic and disorderly social environment; humanity needs a stable environment to develop and accumulate, so he can play with his cell phone sooner.

Of course, despite saying that, Lance doesn’t fully trust the rule of law, because pure rule of law becomes directly quantifiable, making it easy to exploit loopholes.

Those troublemakers at the casino before were probing, and were ultimately dealt with using other means.

Lance remains practical, in this situation prioritizing rule of law, supplemented by rule by man.

Simply put, things that can be stated must have a basis, and as for some things, as long as they aren’t public, isn’t that enough? This gives him a lot of operational space.

Don’t talk to him about any random nonsense; he’s born to exploit as a feudal lord, not a damn saint.

What else could they say?

Dismas and Laura both leaned toward directly dealing with something as simple as possible, but whatever the Lord says goes.

Amanda didn’t have any objections to this either; she even wanted to lash out a few more times.

Surprised and frightened by what this lunatic did, they thought it was the Romani’s doing.

William naturally agreed, because stealing things isn’t worthy of the death penalty, and the Lord’s words also made him ponder deeply, quiet...

”Alright, if there’s nothing else, go back and rest, thank you for your hard work today.”

Lance consoled them with a signal to adjourn, Dismas and William left without much ado, but Amanda and Laura seemed in no hurry to leave.

”Something on your mind?” Lance looked at the two and jestingly quipped, ”Who’s going first?”

Amanda naturally wanted to stay and have a moment alone with Lance, but Laura’s silent demeanor made her feel a bit helpless.

So she proactively spoke first, and what she brought up was the matter concerning the Tomb Robber’s path, involving Supernatural Powers

because she hadn’t disclosed much when she was with the investigation team earlier.

And that she’s mentioning it now as a consultant is part of her job, so it’s evident she’s not making an excuse to stay, but genuinely has something to discuss.

These days, without some prowess can you be a Tomb Robber?

Not to mention the reality where the Tomb Robber profession is suppressed; even in the tomb itself, without prowess, how can anyone withstand the traps, mechanisms, and curses?

Audrey previously showed powers in combat; besides her extraordinary strength and agility, she knew how to concoct Poison Needles, set up flash-daggers...

These are nothing; she can even use shadow stealth, harnessing shadow power, and triggering the Touching Gold Talisman proves she has embarked on the Tomb Robber’s extraordinary path.

Other methods might relate to tomb-robbing, which weren’t displayed at the time.

”Those Tomb Robbers like to light these candles because the powers on them can obscure other forces’ probing. Perhaps Alhazred scholar can do it, but my divination results were influenced, in the end confirming the culprit, thanks to Fergus’s sense of smell.”

Amanda picked up that special candle, and spoke again about its general production method and origin, only supplemented with more detailed information.

The Church has always been capturing those Tomb Robbers, and the clues naturally originate from the graves they’ve ravaged.

With Supernatural Powers, even without clues, they can find clues; so those Tomb Robbers naturally have corresponding means to erase their traces and isolate probing for self-protection.
