Chapter 647: Chapter 336: Taking the Medicinal Pill

Qin Feng couldn’t help but laugh. Juhua was different from others; when he treated her, he had to explain the reasons for everything. Trying to fool her was no easy task.

He exchanged a look with Yun Ying and said softly to Juhua, ”I’ve already told you the worst-case scenario. What could possibly be worse than a matter of life and death? The medicine I’m giving you today is special. It’s best if you get some sleep after taking it. The acupuncture is also to help you fall asleep.”

Hearing this, Juhua finally relaxed. She led them into her room and, as Qin Feng had instructed, lay down on the bed.

Qin Feng nodded to Yun Ying. Yun Ying took a jade box from her robes, opened it, and pinched out a crystalline pill. She said to Juhua, ”Swallow this. This medicine...”

Juhua frowned the moment she saw the pill. ”This must be expensive, right? Let’s be clear, I don’t have that much Silver to pay you. At most, I can let you use my shop for free. Why is it that every medicine you pull out is so precious? It makes me want to take advantage of the offer, but I feel uneasy about it.”

Qin Feng smiled faintly, and Yun Ying let out a small laugh. ”Alright, this medicine isn’t *that* expensive—you can definitely afford to pay it back. From now on, I’ll just be freeloading off you for all my meals.”

After Juhua swallowed the pill, Qin Feng inserted several silver needles into her body. Juhua’s eyelids grew heavy, and a wave of drowsiness washed over her. Just before she fell asleep, she was still murmuring to Yun Ying, ”I... I remember now... have the dog watch... Yingtao...”

This time, neither Qin Feng nor Yun Ying laughed. They stood silently by the bed, gazing fixedly at Juhua without a word.

After removing the needles, Qin Feng said to Yun Ying, ”You watch over her. I’ll be back this afternoon to perform acupuncture again.”

Yun Ying nodded, saying nothing more.

Although Juhua had told them the baby could be delivered via caesarean section, they had never performed such a surgery before. The consequences were completely unpredictable, so the two of them hadn’t pinned all their hopes on the procedure. After considering it for many days, Qin Feng decided to stick with his original plan: give Juhua the Nourishing Essence Pill made by Master Yun, and after she took the medicine, use acupuncture to expel the deep-seated cold qi from her body.

Master Yun had gathered a great many medicinal herbs, but he had only managed to create three of these pills in total. The master and his two disciples each kept one. The medicine was, of course, precious and rare. It was a gentle tonic that nourished one’s vital essence. While one couldn’t claim it could bring the dead back to life, it could indeed be used to save a life in certain situations—Master Yun himself had used his pill to save a dying nobleman. Besides, who could say if a medicine that truly brought back the dead even existed in this world?

The two disciples had no certainty that Juhua’s condition would improve after taking the pill, but they were sure it would strengthen her constitution. This, in turn, would give them a better chance of success with the caesarean section.

When Qin Feng proposed this method, Yun Ying immediately offered to use her own pill first, and he agreed—this would ease his junior sister’s conscience. He still had his own pill. If Juhua’s caesarean section was unsuccessful, or if problems arose, he could use it to buy them some time while they figured out another way to save her.

Qin Feng stood in the room, watching the soundly sleeping Juhua. He remained there quietly for a long moment before turning to leave.

He left softly. Lost in her own world, Yun Ying didn’t seem to notice he was gone. She sat on the edge of the bed, her gaze passing through the window lattice to the lush, green plum tree in the courtyard. She stared blankly for a while, her eyes looking through the gaps in the branches toward the faint outline of the courtyard wall and the weeping willows beyond.

’Everything is so beautiful this season. Why do I feel so numb inside?’

’Yes, completely numb—no anger, no sadness, no despair. Senior Brother hasn’t been harsh with me, and I have no desire to go before him, weeping and begging for forgiveness. I don’t even miss him day and night like I used to. We’re just... coexisting peacefully.’

’It’s so strange. The love that was once so deep and passionate is now completely gone. Though we aren’t total strangers, this has made me truly understand the saying: the setting is the same, but the people have changed.’

’It’s like a blazing fire that’s been doused with a bucket of cold water. No matter how you poke at the embers, you can’t make it rage again.’

’Light it again? Add more fuel? I have no spark, and no firewood left.’

Yet no matter how numb she felt, the moment she recalled the disappointed and pained look in Master Yun’s eyes before he died, her heart would twist as if being stabbed by a knife.

Every time she remembered it, she felt utterly exhausted, mentally and physically.

’Never mind that Juhua is already married; even if Qin Feng really did like her, I don’t think I even have the energy to be jealous anymore. There is one thing I’m sure of: Senior Brother does treat Juhua differently. It doesn’t seem like romantic love, though... but what’s the point of thinking about it? I don’t care anymore. I can’t even tell if my feelings for him still exist at all.’
