Transmigrated as an Unwanted Ugly Girl

Chapter 646: Chapter 335: Beguiling Yun Ying

She squatted in the furrow, pulling weeds for a while. When she looked up and saw birds coming to eat the cherries, she hurriedly shouted to drive them away. The first shout worked, but when she yelled louder, the crafty birds ignored her. Annoyed, Juhua looked around and found a long bamboo pole at the base of the wall—one used for cowpea and cucumber trellises. She picked it up and swung it at the treetops, finally scaring the flock of birds away.

The birds taking flight were brightly colored and quite beautiful, but right now, Juhua didn’t find them cute at all. ’If this keeps up, by the time the cherries are ripe, the birds will have eaten them all.’

As she was angrily trying to think of a solution, she heard a voice calling from the path ahead, ”Juhua, Juhua?” The voice grew closer.

Juhua heard it was Yun Ying calling her and quickly answered.

Seeing her busy in the vegetable patch again, Yun Ying paused for a moment, then walked over, squatted down, and started pulling weeds with her, talking about the delivery at Big Mouth Zhao’s house the day before.

”It’s not hard to treat, just very troublesome. It will take several years of slow correction.” Yun Ying told her the results of Qin Feng’s treatment for the baby.

Juhua felt goosebumps break out all over her. ’That old midwife actually injured the baby by pulling on it. That’s more than just a little rough—did she think she was pulling up a radish? But isn’t this how everyone gives birth? I’ll have to go through the same thing in the future!’

With this thought, she couldn’t stay calm any longer. She said to Yun Ying, ”You saw it yourself. These midwives have some experience and knowledge, but they’re so haphazard. Don’t you have any ideas about it?”

Yun Ying said in frustration, ”Of course I have ideas, but what can I do? I’m just a doctor. I rarely assist with childbirths. Women come to me when they’re sick, but not when they’re in labor. Even if they do call for me, it’s only to prevent things like postpartum hemorrhage or fainting, just to have a doctor on hand for emergency treatment.”

Juhua coaxed her, ”That was in the past. From now on, you should change this situation. Do you know how many mothers and babies die in childbirth every year? It’s like passing through the gates of hell! If you could conquer that, think of how many people you could save in a year! That would be a monumental act of merit.”

In truth, Juhua wasn’t thinking about such grand principles. But for her own sake, for her sister-in-law Liu Yunlan, and for her future daughters and daughters-in-law, she had to push Yun Ying to do something.

Hearing Juhua’s words, Yun Ying’s eyes shone brightly. She clutched a handful of tender green grass and fell into deep thought.

Juhua interrupted her thoughts, saying, ”Don’t just think about it. I have no doubt you’ll become an amazing doctor in the future, one who can deliver babies and ensure both mother and child are safe. But how many people can you save by yourself? Even if you take on a few apprentices, how many more would that be?”

Yun Ying stared at her in astonishment!

Juhua asked, ”How many years have you been studying medicine?”

Yun Ying thought for a moment and said, ”I started learning to identify various medicinal herbs with my father, memorizing medical texts, and learning acupuncture points when I was three. At six, I began practicing acupuncture and taking pulses. It wasn’t until I was ten that I treated a patient and prescribed medicine for the first time, and even then, it was only for minor illnesses, with my father supervising me.”

Seeing Juhua staring wide-eyed at her, she explained, ”Taking a pulse and writing a prescription aren’t that easy. Even for a common cold, you have to differentiate between people and write different prescriptions. Even if the prescription is the same, the dosage of the medicine will be different. It’s definitely not as simple as just copying a formula from a book. If you just copy things recklessly, you can turn a minor illness into a major problem.”

Juhua swallowed hard and asked with difficulty, ”So you’ve been studying medicine for over a decade now? What about your senior apprentice brother? Was it the same for him?”

Yun Ying nodded. ”My senior apprentice brother also started studying medicine at a young age. He had it even harder than me—he began traveling the world alone at fifteen. Don’t underestimate traveling; you can learn so much! It’s just like I said, for a simple cold, the treatment for someone from the south is different from someone from the north. The local environment shapes the people, and even the illnesses are different.”

Juhua suppressed her shock and said persuasively, ”From the sound of it, it takes ten or twenty years, maybe even more, to master medicine. But delivering babies doesn’t have to take that long! The midwives don’t need to know how to write prescriptions, you just need to teach them what to do. If you add Caesarean sections to that, I bet the chances of failure would be much smaller. Why don’t you open a school and teach apprentices in batches?”

This time it was Yun Ying’s turn to be shocked. She glared at Juhua in annoyance. ”You think this is like planting vegetables? ’In batches,’ you say. You make it sound so easy.”

Juhua was frustrated too. ’Weren’t doctors in my past life trained in batches? Even if you can’t produce that many, you can’t just take on one or two. No wonder medical skills can’t be spread! For a national treasure of a physician like Master Yun to have only taught two apprentices is such a waste!’

She asked persistently, ”Can’t you treat them differently? Divide the disciples into two types. One would be personal disciples, for those with talent who are willing to learn and improve, whom you would teach meticulously. The other would be outer disciples. For example, for childbirth, you could specifically train a batch of midwives. And if you add the Caesarean section...”

She was getting animated when she saw He standing at the entrance to the backyard path, calling to her, ”Juhua, come back quickly. Doctor Qin is here. He said he’ll check your pulse.”

Juhua and Yun Ying exchanged a glance. She dropped the hoe in her hand and went out.

When she saw Qin Feng, she smiled. ”Doctor Qin, Doctor Yun was just saying she would check my pulse. Aren’t you very busy? You could have just let her do it.”

Qin Feng nodded and smiled. ”That’s true. But I’m just here to give you acupuncture.”

Juhua scooped some water from the well. While washing her hands, she asked in surprise, ”Acupuncture? Why do I need acupuncture? Doctor Qin, you can’t hide things from me. It might be presumptuous of me to say, but if you tell me, at least I’ll know what’s going on and might even be able to help you come up with a plan.”
