Transmigrated as an Unwanted Ugly Girl

Chapter 643: Chapter 334: Rivals in the Same Trade

The midwife attending to Guizhi was Granny Ding from Yu Tree Village. Last year, she had been called to the Zheng Family home, but Liu Yunlan had already successfully given birth to little Hulu before she even arrived. For this reason, her reputation had skyrocketed, and she was now known as ”Auntie Fu.”

She shoved Yun Ying aside. When she saw that Yun Ying still didn’t know her place and wouldn’t leave, she grew furious and called out to Big Mouth Zhao’s mother, ”Hurry up! Listen, what are you panicking about? We’ve delivered more babies than most people have eaten grains of rice. If I can’t even handle a small matter like this, how can I still call myself ’Auntie Fu’? Now, you and Gou Dan’s mother hold her arms and have her bear down. And get everyone who doesn’t belong out of here. Otherwise, if something goes wrong, I’m not taking responsibility.”

Big Mouth’s mother glanced awkwardly at Yun Ying. Her own son was the one who had invited the doctor, so she couldn’t very well say anything. Besides, her daughter-in-law, Guizhi, had also mentioned wanting this Doctor Yun. But Granny Ding clearly couldn’t stand Doctor Yun. ’What am I supposed to do?’

Yun Ying snorted coldly and said nothing.

But then Granny Ding picked up a basin of bloody water and headed straight for Yun Ying, bumping into her and forcing her to back away until she was completely out of the room. As it happened, Yun Ying had been feeling nauseous for the past couple of days, and the sight of the bloody water made her lean against the wall and dry heave again.

Granny Ding shot a look at the others in the room and began making scornful remarks. ”And she wants to help deliver a baby? What a joke! Can’t even stand the smell of blood. Isn’t that just trifling with a human life? Where did they find this snake oil salesman? Even if you’re just trying to freeload, you ought to know that some situations are more serious than others. A woman is giving birth—this is a matter of life and death, and she comes here to try and fool people?”

After saying her piece, she handed the basin of wastewater to someone outside to take, then turned and SLAMMED the door shut, leaving Yun Ying fuming where she stood.

There were a few married women in the main hall as well. Old Cheng’s wife was in the middle of her tasks, but when she saw Yun Ying’s awful expression, she hurried over and said, ”Doctor Yun, why don’t you head home for now? If Guizhi needs anything, we can send for you again.”

The moment the words left her mouth, she realized how inappropriate they sounded. ’Oh, so we kick her out now, and then go ask for her help again when there’s trouble? Besides, she didn’t just show up on her own—wasn’t it Big Mouth Zhao who invited her?’

Unsure of what to do, she turned to look for Big Mouth Zhao.

Yun Ying swallowed her anger. The only reason she hadn’t left was that she could tell Guizhi was in a bad situation—the baby’s position was a bit off—and so she hadn’t dared to leave. But who would have thought that old woman would be so hateful, and that no one from the Zhao family would step in to smooth things over. Furious, she turned and walked away.

When she returned to Juhua’s house, she saw Juhua sitting at the courtyard entrance, sewing small clothes and enjoying the cross-breeze. Yun Ying walked over, put down her medicine box, and plopped down angrily on the threshold, not saying a word.

Seeing her like this, Juhua asked in confusion, ”What’s the matter? Has Sister Guizhi given birth?”

Yun Ying shook her head and told Juhua how she had been kicked out. Finally, she said resentfully, ”That old woman... if something happens to Guizhi, I’d like to see how she explains herself to the Zhao family!”

Juhua frowned. ”Explain herself? Even if they killed her, it would be useless. How can you get into a fight with her at a time like this? She’s just an ignorant village midwife. Even if the mother and child both die, people like her never admit it’s their fault. They’ll just say the woman had an unlucky fate. You should hurry back over there. If something goes wrong, the Zhao family are the ones who will suffer, not the midwife. Don’t pay any attention to her. Brother Big Mouth is the one who called for you, so just deal with him directly.”

Yun Ying said sullenly, ”I wanted to find him, but he vanished in the blink of an eye. That old woman was spouting all sorts of awful things and physically pushed me out.”

As they were speaking, they saw Big Mouth Zhao sprinting toward them. He cried out anxiously to Yun Ying, ”Doctor Yun, quick... come quick! Guizhi... she’s not going to make it!”

Yun Ying was startled. Juhua quickly said to him, ”Your midwife was so afraid Yun Ying would steal her business that she kicked her out. You have to back her up, or she won’t be able to get a word in edgewise, let alone help. Besides, all this fighting is just making things harder for Sister Guizhi, isn’t it?”

”I know,” Big Mouth Zhao said, huffing and puffing. ”That old hag is scared now, too. Doctor Yun, come with me. No one will dare to curse you this time. Quick!”

Seeing his sweat-soaked, anxious face, Yun Ying quickly shouldered her medicine box and hurried off with him.

Juhua watched their retreating backs, feeling extremely worried, but also puzzled. ’Isn’t Guizhi known for having easy births? Why is she having such a difficult labor this time?’

What she didn’t know was that Guizhi’s baby was slightly breech. It normally wouldn’t have been a problem, but when the midwife saw Yun Ying arrive, she became angry and agitated. In a moment of carelessness, she failed to turn the baby properly. By the time she had finished cursing Yun Ying away and tried to focus on the delivery again, she discovered the baby was stuck. That’s when she began to panic.
