Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”The right kind,” he said.

She held her fork for a moment. ”Clara briefed you about Ashford calling Thomas.”

”Yes,” he said.

”He’s looking for a way out,” said Makima. ”Not from the acquisition. From the fight. He thought this was going to be easier than it is and it isn’t.”

Sean looked at her.

”You’ve been following this more closely than I realized,” he said.

She gave him the look she gave him when he said something that was obvious in retrospect. ”You talk to me about it,” she said. ”I listen to everything. I always have.” She picked up her fork again. ”Four days.”

”Four days,” he said.

”Then what,” she said.

”Then Vertex stays independent,” he said. ”And we figure out what comes after.”

”We,” she said.

”Clara and the founders and me,” he said.

”And Fischer,” she said.

”And Fischer,” he said.

”And Marcus and Derek,” she said.

”Probably,” he said.

She looked at him across the table. ”You’ve been building something for a while,” she said. ”Not just the Vertex position. Something larger.”

”Yes,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”I’ve been watching it happen from this kitchen for months.” She held his gaze. ”It’s a good thing you’re building, Sean.”

He looked at her.

”I know you know that,” she said. ”I’m saying it because some things should be said out loud even when both people already know them.”

He thought about Amara saying the same thing at the restaurant, about things that should be said because they deserved to be said rather than assumed.

”Thank you,” he said.

”Eat your pasta,” she said. ”It took forty minutes.”

He ate his pasta.

Outside the building stood the way it always stood, the city doing its Wednesday things around it, the disclosure filed and public and already part of a story that was going to resolve in four days one way or another.

His phone showed two more messages from people he didn’t know who had found his contact details through the university directory. He didn’t read them.

He finished dinner and helped Makima with the dishes and went upstairs and opened the board meeting preparation notes Clara had updated that afternoon.

Four days.

He read until midnight.

Then he turned the light off and looked at the ceiling in the dark and let the certainty that was already there underneath everything do what certainty did when you stopped managing it.

He slept.

===============

The board meeting was Wednesday at two.

Clara had set it up with the specific efficiency she brought to everything, the calendar invite arriving Tuesday evening with a note that said: Full board. Funding round parameters. Three days before the vote felt like the right time to have the conversation we’ve been approaching for two weeks.

Sean read the note and replied: Agreed. I’ll be there.

She replied: I know you will.

========

The Vertex conference room was on the fourth floor, larger than the third floor room where Sean and Clara had first spoken properly. A proper board table, eight chairs, the product dashboard visible through the glass wall showing the same three hundred and forty clients and eighty-seven percent that had been there since the beginning.

Sean arrived at one fifty-two.

Clara was already there, which he’d expected. She was standing at the window looking at the street below, not at her phone, not at a document, just at the street, the specific posture of someone giving themselves a moment before something significant.

She heard him come in and turned.

She looked different from the previous meetings. Not less professional. Just carrying the weight of three weeks more visibly than she usually allowed. The circles under her eyes were real and she hadn’t done anything to obscure them which felt like a deliberate choice about what today was.

”You look tired,” he said.

”I am tired,” she said. ”Three more days and I can be tired properly. Right now I’m functional.”

”You’ve been functional for three weeks,” he said.

”Functional is what I do,” she said. ”It’s not my best quality but it’s my most reliable one.”

He sat down.

She sat across from him, which was the same position as their first meeting, and she had the same notepad, and for a moment the whole arc of the last three weeks lived in the specific familiarity of those two things.

”Before the board comes in,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”How are you actually,” she said. Not professionally. The actual question.

He thought about it.

”Ready,” he said. ”For Friday. For whatever comes after Friday.” He held her gaze. ”How are you actually.”

She looked at the table for a moment.

”I’ve been in this company for two years,” she said. ”I built the financial model that made the Series B possible. I’ve been in every significant room since the beginning.” She paused. ”This is the most significant room. And I care about the outcome more than I’ve cared about any outcome in my professional life.” She looked up. ”Which is the kind of thing you’re not supposed to say out loud because it implies you weren’t fully invested in everything before.”

”You were fully invested before,” he said. ”This is different.”

”Why is it different,” she said.

”Because before this you were building,” he said. ”Now you’re fighting to keep what you built. Those require the same energy but they don’t feel the same.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

”No,” she said quietly. ”They don’t.”

The door opened.

Thomas came in first, the steady quality he’d carried through the whole arc unchanged. David behind him, the technical precision of someone who processed everything before speaking. Rachel last, her forward energy filling the room in the specific way it always did.

The two independent directors arrived a minute later. Their names were Stefan Vogel and Caroline Reyes, both in their fifties, both with the professional composure of people who had made a difficult board vote and were sitting with it.
