Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”Thank you,” he said.

”Don’t thank me,” said Mia. ”Just make sure it counts.”

”It counts,” said Sean.

His phone buzzed.

Max.

Recording from the four PM call. Hargreave confirmed as the contact. He referenced the quarterly figures. He mentioned Cole by name twice. He discussed three of the shell entities by name. A pause in the message thread. It’s exactly what we needed.

Sean showed Mia the text.

She read it.

Something moved through her expression that wasn’t the controlled assessment she usually brought to information. Something rawer. The specific thing that happened when a weight that had been present for long enough to feel permanent suddenly had an actual end date attached to it.

She pressed her lips together.

Looked at the window.

”Okay,” she said. Very quietly.

Sean gave her a moment.

Then he picked up the documentation and added the notebook to it and thought about Elena’s contact at the federal level who had been working the Cross network for two years and was about to receive a package that connected everything she’d been building to something considerably larger.

”Mia,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Tomorrow morning this goes,” he said. ”After that you’re not carrying this alone anymore. None of you are.”

She held his gaze for a long moment.

”I know,” she said.

She didn’t say thank you. He understood that. Some things were too large for thank you and she knew the difference.

She stood and picked up her bag.

At the door she paused.

”Sean,” she said.

”Yeah.”

”After this is over,” she said. ”Whatever over looks like. I want to do something.”

”What,” he said.

”I don’t know yet,” she said. ”But I’ve spent two months in a situation I didn’t choose. I want to choose the next one.” She looked at him directly. ”I’m going to figure out what that looks like.”

”Good,” said Sean.

She nodded once and left.

Sean sat at his desk with the documentation and Mia’s notebook and the recording Max had sent.

Tomorrow morning.

He spent the next three hours compiling the final package, checking every section, cross-referencing Max’s sources, adding Amara’s seventeen pages of policy analysis at the back where they belonged, and when it was done it was the most complete thing he’d ever put together and he’d learned from Elena and Gerald Pemberton and Patricia Moyer and forty years of Vivian Castellan’s careful architecture that complete was the only version that actually mattered.

He transferred the package to the secure channel Elena had set up.

[No spend. No rebate. Just the work.]

Then he went downstairs.

Makima had made soup, the real kind, the kind that had been going since afternoon, and she set a bowl in front of him without asking and sat across the table and looked at his face.

”Done,” she said.

”Tomorrow morning it goes,” said Sean.

”Then tonight you eat soup,” said Makima.

He ate the soup.

She didn’t ask about the details and he didn’t offer them and the apartment was warm and the building stood around them exactly as it always had and somewhere across the city a seventeen year old named Soo-Jin had a cleared debt and eleven other names on a list were one morning away from something changing.

”The girl,” said Makima. ”Mia. How is she.”

”She’s figuring out what comes next,” said Sean.

Makima looked at her own bowl. ”That’s the right thing to be doing.”

”Yes,” said Sean.

”She can figure it out,” said Makima. ”She kept a list for two months. People who keep lists when things are hard know how to build things when they’re not.”

Sean looked at her.

She looked back with the expression she had when she said the accurate thing and knew it was accurate and didn’t need him to confirm it.

He ate more soup.

The Next Day

Elena called at eight fifteen.

Sean was still at his desk, coffee in hand, watching the morning arrive outside his window when his phone rang.

”It’s with her,” said Elena. ”She received the package at seven this morning. I spoke to her twenty minutes ago.”

”And,” said Sean.

”She said, and I’m quoting her directly, that this is the most complete evidentiary package she’s received in eleven years of federal work.” A pause. ”She also said she wants to speak to you.”

”When,” said Sean.

”This morning if possible,” said Elena. ”She understands the girls’ situations. She’s treating the active cases as the immediate priority before anything else moves.”

”Tell her I’m available,” said Sean.

The call from the federal contact came eighteen minutes later.

Her name was Agent Clara Reyes. Her voice had the specific quality of someone who had spent a long time in rooms where precision mattered and had internalized it completely.

”Mr. Miller,” she said. ”I’ve been working the Cross network for two years. I had the property structure and the shell company chain but not the operational layer underneath it.” A pause. ”Your package gives me the operational layer. It also gives me the hospital data connection which is a federal data privacy violation that significantly widens our jurisdiction.” She paused again. ”The recordings from the Thursday call are what close it. I want you to know that.”

”Max found those,” said Sean.

”I understand your colleague built most of the technical documentation,” said Reyes. ”I’d like to speak with him as well.” She paused. ”The twelve girls on the list. We’re treating their extraction as the first operational priority. Before any arrests. Before any warrants are served publicly.”

”How soon,” said Sean.

”The warrants are being prepared now,” she said. ”We move on the houses and the agency simultaneously. My estimate is forty-eight hours.”

Sean looked out the window.

Forty-eight hours.

”Soo-Jin’s debt was cleared earlier this week through their own payment system,” said Sean. ”She’s been in the house but she knows something is coming. She’ll cooperate.”

”She won’t need to cooperate,” said Reyes. ”She’ll just need to leave when we tell her she can.” A pause. ”The policy analysis appended to the package. The seventeen pages.”
