Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Mia held his gaze. ”You’d do that.”

”You spent two months documenting something nobody else was documenting and then handed it to the right person at exactly the right moment,” said Sean. ”Elena would want to know you exist.”

Mia looked at the table briefly. Then at Sean. Then at Makima.

”She will,” said Makima simply.

—--

Reyes called at two thirty.

Sean stepped into the hallway to take it.

”The financial forfeiture proceedings have formally begun,” said Reyes. ”Cole’s property holdings, the shell company accounts, the development company assets. We’re looking at a total asset pool of approximately forty-two million dollars across all entities once the forensic accounting completes.”

”Restitution for the girls,” said Sean.

”That’s the intent,” said Reyes. ”The legal process takes time but the asset pool is significant enough that meaningful individual restitution is realistic.” She paused. ”The hospital regulatory action is moving separately. The third party outreach company’s access has been suspended at all three hospitals as of this morning. The hospitals’ administration teams have been notified and the relevant oversight bodies are conducting emergency audits.”

”How long before the audits complete,” said Sean.

”Weeks,” said Reyes. ”But the pipeline is already closed. No further data access.” Another pause. ”Mr. Miller. The Hargreave and Associates firm. The state bar has been notified. Disciplinary proceedings will begin alongside the criminal prosecution. The firm’s assets are frozen.”

”The Lockhart connection,” said Sean. ”The Cross network.”

”Being processed simultaneously,” said Reyes. ”Elena Voss’s documentation on the property scheme combined with yours has given us the full picture. The nine parcels Vivian Castellan assembled, the Whitfield Crossing development, the shell company structure that ran the scheme for forty years.” She paused. ”That’s a separate prosecution but it’s moving on the same timeline. Hargreave is the thread that connects both.”

Sean looked at the hallway wall.

”One attorney,” he said. ”Forty years. Two completely different operations. Same architecture.”

”He was very good at what he did,” said Reyes. ”Which makes the documentation you built even more significant. He was careful enough that two years of federal investigation hadn’t found the operational layer.” She paused. ”The policy analysis appended to your package. The seventeen pages.”

”My colleague’s work,” said Sean.

”She’s identified three specific regulatory gaps that allowed the hospital pipeline to exist undetected,” said Reyes. ”I’d like to connect her with the relevant oversight bodies when she’s ready. Her analysis is exactly the kind of thing that changes how these gaps get addressed going forward.”

”She’ll be ready,” said Sean.

He ended the call and stood in the hallway for a moment.

Forty-two million dollars in frozen assets. A state bar disciplinary proceeding. Two criminal prosecutions running simultaneously. Hospital regulatory audits. Three specific policy gaps being addressed.

He thought about Hargreave visiting Meridian Street, walking through the rooms, not acknowledging the girls directly.

He thought about forty years of the same architecture under different surfaces.

It wasn’t just down.

It was being taken apart at every level simultaneously, the criminal prosecution and the financial forfeiture and the regulatory action and the bar disciplinary proceeding and the policy work Amara had started in a hospital bed, all of it moving at once, the complete version of done rather than the partial version.

He went back into the apartment.

Mia looked at him from across the kitchen table.

He sat down.

”The assets are frozen,” he said. ”Forty-two million across all entities. Going toward restitution for the girls.” He held her gaze. ”The hospital pipeline is closed. The regulatory audits are running. The bar is moving against the firm. Two criminal prosecutions both active.”

Mia sat with that.

”It’s not just the local operation,” she said slowly.

”All of it,” said Sean. ”Every layer. Every city. Every connected structure.” He held her gaze. ”It’s not one thing coming down. It’s the whole machine.”

She looked at the table.

Then at Sean.

”The list,” she said.

”The list started it,” said Sean. ”Everything else followed from the list.”

Mia pressed her lips together briefly and looked at the window and when she looked back her expression had the quality of someone who had been carrying an enormous thing for a long time and had finally put it somewhere that could hold the weight properly.

”The fifteen year old,” she said. ”Ji. She’s going to go home and see her dog.”

”Yes,” said Sean.

”And Soo-Jin is going to take her chemistry results somewhere that matters,” said Mia.

”Yes,” said Sean.

She was quiet for a moment.

”Okay,” she said.

It was the smallest version of the word. Just two letters. But it had everything the arc had built toward sitting inside it, the weight of twelve names and then forty-seven and two months of a notebook and a Sunday morning at six AM and a chemistry test on Wednesday.

Makima, who had been quiet through all of this, reached across the table and briefly covered Mia’s hand with hers.

Just that. And then she stood and went to put the kettle on because that was what she did and because some moments needed something simple to exist alongside them.

Sean looked at Mia.

She looked back.

”What comes next,” he said.

She thought about it.

”Elena Voss,” she said.

”After that,” he said.

”Law school,” she said. ”Eventually.” She paused. ”First I need to call my mother.”

”Tonight,” said Sean.

”Tonight,” said Mia.

”She’s going to be upset,” said Sean.

”Yes,” said Mia. ”And then she’s going to want to understand what actually happened.” She held his gaze with the direct quality that had been present since a Sunday afternoon on a road when she’d looked at him and decided in about two seconds that he wasn’t going to do what marks usually did. ”She keeps records of everything. She’ll want the full picture.”

”Give her the full picture,” said Sean.

”I will,” said Mia.

The kettle started.

Makima made tea as they continued their conservation.

Then Mia Conservation , her phone rang.

She looked at it.
