Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Quick context for readers: the tech startup Sean invested in months ago during the Lockhart arc period was Vertex Data Systems. He’d put money into four positions then, pharmaceutical, logistics, a tech startup and data infrastructure, all projected to return four to six times in sixty to ninety days. Vertex was the startup. He’d never needed to name it until now because it hadn’t needed naming until now.

Max sent the research at seven thirty that evening.

Sean read it at his desk with coffee that went cold before he was halfway through because he kept stopping to think rather than drinking.

Meridian Capital Group had been founded fourteen years ago by a man named Richard Ashford. Sixty-two years old. Former investment banker, twenty years at a firm that no longer existed under that name, who had left to start his own holding company with three partners who had since been bought out or departed depending on whose version of events you believed.

The legitimate surface was real and substantial. Meridian had genuine holdings across technology, logistics, and commercial real estate. They employed several thousand people across their various subsidiaries. Their annual filings were clean and their compliance record was spotless.

The pattern Max had found lived underneath the surface.

Twelve acquisitions in six years. Max had gone through each one. Nine of the acquired companies were effectively gone, their products wound down, their teams dispersed, their client relationships absorbed into Meridian’s existing service infrastructure. Two were still nominally operating but had lost the majority of their original client base. One had genuinely survived and was doing well inside the Meridian structure.

One out of twelve.

The one that survived was a company whose product Meridian had actually needed rather than simply wanted to extract clients from. Everything else had been client harvesting dressed up as strategic acquisition.

Sean read through the individual case studies Max had assembled on each acquisition.

The pattern was consistent and deliberate. Meridian targeted companies that were cash-light at funding cycle gaps, offered premiums that were attractive on paper but structured to close before the target could run a proper alternatives process, and then moved quickly to migrate client relationships in the first ninety days post-acquisition before those clients had time to consider other options.

It was efficient. It was legal. And it had taken twelve companies that had built something real and converted them into client lists.

He texted Max. The Vertex position they’ve been building for six months. Can you find the specific trading pattern? I want to know if they were buying during periods when the stock was artificially suppressed.

Max replied twenty minutes later. Already looking at it. There are three periods over the last six months where Vertex’s volume spiked downward right before Meridian purchased blocks. That kind of correlation can be coincidence or it can be manufactured. I need another day to build the case either way.

Build it, Sean replied.

He put his phone down and looked at his notes.

Clara Weston, CFO, twenty-six years old. He’d pulled her professional history from what was publicly available. She’d joined Vertex two years ago from a larger financial firm where she’d spent two years building financial models for technology company valuations. Before that, a business degree from a university with a strong finance program, graduated at the top of her class, went straight into the firm rather than banking specifically because she wanted to be closer to the actual companies rather than the transactions around them.

She’d built Vertex’s funding model from scratch when she joined. The model that had made them attractive to the investors who’d put in the money that made the company viable. She understood every number in the company the way architects understood load-bearing walls.

She also, based on the seventeen-minute call that afternoon, understood exactly what Meridian’s acquisition meant for those numbers. She hadn’t needed Sean to explain what client harvesting was. She’d been waiting for someone to say the specific words.

He closed his laptop at ten thirty and went downstairs.

========================

Makima was still up, which wasn’t unusual, sitting at her kitchen table with a building maintenance schedule and a cup of tea that was actually still warm, which meant she hadn’t been at it as long as the spread of papers suggested.

She looked up when he came in.

”You have the look,” she said.

”What look,” said Sean.

”The one where something significant started today and you’re not sure whether to say it’s nothing or say it’s everything,” she said. ”You get it at the beginning of things.”

He sat down across from her.

”The investments came in,” he said.

She looked at him. ”All of them.”

”The pharmaceutical and logistics positions,” he said. ”This morning. Significantly.”

She held her tea cup. ”How significantly.”

He told her the number.

She absorbed it with the specific stillness she brought to large things, not performing calm but actually processing. ”Sixty-four million,” she said quietly.

”Yes.”

She looked at her maintenance schedule, then back at him. ”And now.”

”There’s a company being targeted by a hostile acquisition,” he said. ”I’ve been a shareholder for a few months. The acquirer has a pattern of stripping client relationships and shutting down what they bought.” He paused. ”I spoke to their CFO today. I’m meeting her tomorrow afternoon.”

”Her,” said Makima.

Sean looked at her.

She looked back with the specific expression she had when she was noting something without making it into more than a note. ”You said her.”

”Yes,” said Sean.

”How old,” said Makima.

”Twenty-six,” said Sean.

Makima picked up her tea. ”Tell me about the acquisition. The actual situation.”

He told her, the same way he’d walked her through the Lockhart situation months ago, the full picture without simplifying. She listened without interrupting, occasionally looking at something in her maintenance papers not because it was relevant but because she processed better when her hands had something to do.

When he finished she was quiet for a moment.

”It’s the same thing,” she said finally. ”Different surface.”

”Yes,” said Sean.
