Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”She said it wasn’t the same thing,” said Mia.

”She tells everyone that,” said Sean. ”Come at noon.”

—----------------

At eight fifteen Reyes called.

”The sweep is complete across all four cities,” she said. ”Thirty-one individuals taken into custody. Cole, Hargreave, Diana Osei, the woman called Grace who collected on Sundays, Mr. Park from Meridian Street, and twenty-six others across the network.” A pause. ”The hospital data pipeline company. The owners arrested an hour ago. The hospital’s administration has been notified and the relevant regulatory bodies are being contacted today.”

”The girls,” said Sean.

”All forty-seven girls across all four cities are safe and have been contacted by victim support services,” said Reyes. ”The twelve from your list were the first priority. All accounted for before seven AM.”

Forty-seven.

He’d known the number was larger than twelve. Max had said that from the beginning. But forty-seven had a different weight from twelve, the specific weight of a number that represented forty-seven specific people with forty-seven specific situations that had been running while the documentation was being built.

”The financial assets,” said Reyes. ”Cole’s property holdings, the shell company accounts, the development company assets. All frozen pending forfeiture proceedings. We’re looking at a significant fund that will go toward victim restitution once the legal process completes.”

”How long,” said Sean.

”Months,” said Reyes. ”The legal process takes time. But it’s moving.” She paused. ”Mr. Miller. The documentation you provided was the most complete evidentiary package I’ve received in federal work. The recording from the Thursday call alone was sufficient to close the case against Hargreave. Everything else built the context that makes prosecution inevitable.” She paused. ”I want you to know that.”

”Max built the documentation,” said Sean.

”You built Max,” said Reyes simply. ”And you knew what to do with what he found.” She paused. ”Is there anything you need from us.”

Sean thought about it.

”The girl who kept the list,” he said. ”Mia. When you need her testimony, treat her like someone who made this possible. Because she did.”

”I’ll make sure of it personally,” said Reyes.

The call ended.

Sean sat at his desk for a long moment.

Then he called Max.

Max picked up on the second ring. ”I know,” he said.

”Forty-seven,” said Sean.

”I know,” Max said again.

They stayed on the line without speaking for a moment. The specific silence of two people who had been building toward something for two weeks and had just watched it arrive.

”Go be with Amara,” said Sean.

”I’m already here,” said Max. ”I called her at seven thirty. She came over.” A pause. ”She’s been reading the news coverage that’s starting to come through. She has opinions.”

”Of course she does,” said Sean.

”She also cried for about four minutes when I told her all forty-seven were safe,” said Max. ”Then she reorganized my kitchen.”

”The two things aren’t unrelated,” said Sean.

”No,” said Max. ”They’re not.” A pause. ”Sean.”

”Yeah.”

”You said we’d take it apart,” said Max. ”You said it in the café on Monday morning like it was a reasonable thing to say.”

”It was a reasonable thing to say,” said Sean.

”Most people,” said Max carefully, ”would not describe dismantling a forty-seven-person cross-city criminal network in nine days as reasonable.”

”Ten days,” said Sean.

”Ten days,” said Max. ”Still.”

Sean looked at the city outside.

The Sunday morning had become fully itself now, the city moving in its weekend way, entirely indifferent to what had happened inside it between six and eight AM.

”Go eat breakfast with your sister,” said Sean.

”She’s already made breakfast,” said Max. ”She found ingredients in my kitchen I didn’t know were there.”

”She reorganized and then she cooked,” said Sean.

”She reorganizes toward a purpose,” said Max. ”She always has a purpose.”

Sean ended the call and sat for another moment with the quiet of the apartment around him.

He thought about Hargreave in custody. About Cole. About Diana Osei, who had said warmly to a girl that her debt was looking better while knowing it would never look better without outside intervention.

He thought about forty years of the same architecture under different surfaces, starting with Harlan Cross’s property acquisitions and running forward to a modeling agency on a commercial street and a third-party outreach company with legitimate hospital contracts.

All of it connected.

All of it down.

He picked up his phone one more time.

Vanessa.

Something finished this morning. Something significant. I’ll tell you properly when I see you.

Her response came back in four minutes.

I’m glad it finished. Are you okay.

Yes, he typed. Better than okay.

Good, she replied. The campaign edits are ready when you want to see them. No rush.

He put his phone in his pocket and stood.

He checked his balance.

The number was the same as yesterday because nothing he’d done this morning had involved spending anything.

Some things didn’t cost money.

They just cost time and attention and the willingness to build something carefully enough that when it moved it moved completely.

He went downstairs.

Makima was in her kitchen when he knocked and came in, already cooking despite the fact that it was barely eight thirty in the morning, which was completely consistent with someone who had said she was going to have food ready at noon and interpreted noon as a deadline requiring a four hour head start.

She looked at him when he came in.

She read his face the way she always read his face.

”Done,” she said.

”Done,” said Sean.

She looked at him for a long moment. Then she turned back to the stove and said, without turning around, ”Sit down. There’s coffee.”

He sat at the kitchen table and poured coffee from the pot she’d already made and looked at the flowers on the counter, still the same flowers he’d given her weeks ago, replaced twice since then with new ones because she’d kept them going rather than letting them run out.

Sean drank his coffee.

Makima cooked.
