Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

He started buying shares at nine thirty when the market opened.

Carefully. The same discipline as before. Small blocks at intervals. But more of them and over a longer intended horizon.

By noon he had added another three percent.

[Vertex purchases Monday morning: $2,410,000]

[Balance: $63,827,597]

[2x rebate: $4,820,000]

[New Balance: $68,647,597]

He was at seven point one percent total.

At the disclosure threshold the market would know he was a significant shareholder and the story of who he was would become part of the Vertex narrative. He was not there yet. He was building toward it deliberately.

Marcus texted at twelve thirty.

You’re still buying.

Yes, said Sean.

Into a contested acquisition with three weeks to a vote, said Marcus.

Yes, said Sean.

I’ve been reading about Meridian, said Marcus. The acquisition history. Did you write the analysis that’s been circulating in shareholder communications.

I helped build it, said Sean.

A pause. It’s very good. The client section specifically. Another pause. Sean. Can I ask you something.

Yes, said Sean.

Are you building something, Marcus said. Not just blocking this acquisition. Something larger.

Sean sat with that for a moment.

Come to the investment club meeting this week, he said. Bring your best thinking on the data infrastructure sector for the next three years.

A longer pause. That’s a yes.

It’s an invitation, said Sean.

Same thing, said Marcus. I’ll be there.

Sean put his phone in his pocket and went to his afternoon class.

—-----------------

The economics professor was talking about information asymmetry and competitive advantage and Sean sat in the third row and listened and thought about how the things being described in theoretical terms were the same things he’d been living inside for three weeks at a practical level.

After class Derek Pierce fell into step beside him outside the building.

Derek had the same quality he always had, the intelligence present and the specific edge of someone who was always slightly measuring the conversation against his own internal standard.

”Vertex,” said Derek.

Sean looked at him.

”You’re buying Vertex shares,” said Derek. ”I’ve been watching the volume patterns. There’s a disciplined accumulation happening and I can’t find any institutional source for it. The only other significant buyer is Meridian and the pattern doesn’t match them.”

”You’ve been tracking the volume patterns,” said Sean.

”I find it interesting,” said Derek. Not defensively. Just factually.

They walked for a moment.

”What do you think is happening,” said Sean.

”Someone who understands the company believes the acquisition is going to fail and wants a position before that becomes the consensus view,” said Derek. ”The smart move if you believe the independent outcome is actually achievable.”

”And if you believe the independent outcome is achievable because you’re part of making it achievable,” said Sean.

Derek stopped walking.

Sean kept walking.

Derek caught up.

”You’re the buyer,” he said.

”I’m a buyer,” said Sean.

”How much,” said Derek.

”Enough to matter,” said Sean.

Derek was quiet for a moment, the specific silence of someone running a fast calculation. ”Your pharmaceutical position paid out last week. The logistics firm the week before. You have significant capital available.”

”You’ve been watching my positions,” said Sean.

”I find it interesting,” said Derek again, the same flat delivery.

”Derek,” said Sean.

”Yeah.”

”The investment club meeting this week,” said Sean. ”Be there.”

Derek looked at him for a moment. ”You’re building something.”

”I’m building several things,” said Sean. ”Come to the meeting.”

They parted at the end of the path, Derek heading somewhere else, Sean toward the building where James was waiting.

In the car he texted Clara.

How are the seventeen holding up under Meridian’s first communications push.

She replied in a few minutes. Meridian sent personalized letters to the top fifteen shareholder positions this morning. Three of the seventeen received them. All three have confirmed they’re holding. One of them forwarded the letter to Thomas with a note that said: Is this the best they have.

Who, said Sean.

Helen Park, said Clara.

Sean almost laughed.

Of course, he said.

She also attached her own written response to Meridian’s letter, said Clara. Which she is considering sending directly to them. A pause. It’s very good. She’s been in the industry for thirty years and she has opinions.

Let her send it, said Sean.

Thomas said the same thing, said Clara.

Tell her she has our full support, said Sean.

A pause. Then: She said she doesn’t need your support but she appreciates the thought and that you should keep buying.

Sean looked at his phone.

She knows, he typed.

She figured it out from the volume pattern this morning, Clara replied. She said she spent thirty years in technology infrastructure and tracking share accumulation is not complicated if you know what to look for. Another pause. She also said, and I’m quoting directly: tell your eighteen year old he has good instincts and he should listen to them.

Sean looked at that message.

Then he put his phone in his pocket.

James pulled up to the building.

He went inside.

Makima was in the lobby checking the mail, back from Danny’s, and she looked at him when he came through the door with the specific expression she had when she was reading something in his face.

”Good weekend,” she said.

”Very good,” he said.

She looked at him for a moment longer.

”Danny’s better,” she said. ”The fever broke Sunday morning. He made me eat breakfast before he’d let me leave which was his way of saying thank you without saying thank you.”

”That sounds like Danny,” said Sean.

”He also asked about you,” she said. ”He wanted to know if you’d be at the next football thing.”

”Yes,” said Sean.

Makima handed him a piece of his mail that had come to her address by mistake. ”The vote,” she said. ”Three weeks.”

”Three weeks,” he said.

”Are you going to be okay,” she said.

”The count is solid,” he said. ”Meridian is going to push but the seventeen are holding and Helen Park is writing them letters.”
