Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”That’s Soo-Jin,” said Sean.

”Eighty-four percent,” said Mia.

”Eighty-four percent,” said Sean.

”And Ji called me this morning,” said Mia. ”She sent me a photo first. Her dog. The unpronounceable one. She sent a photo of her face pressed against its neck and her eyes closed and she looked.” Mia paused. ”She looked like someone who had put something down and was never going to pick it up again.”

Sean sat with that for a moment.

”Good,” he said.

”Yes,” said Mia. ”Good.”

She was quiet briefly.

”I’m thinking about criminal law specifically,” she said. ”Not corporate. Not property. Criminal. The specific intersection of financial crime and human harm. The way things are structured so they look legal while doing illegal damage.” She paused. ”Elena’s practice is adjacent to that. Not exactly it but close enough to learn from.”

”That’s exactly the right direction,” said Sean.

”I know,” said Mia. ”I figured it out at about two AM on Monday. I wrote it down so I wouldn’t talk myself out of it in the morning.” A pause. ”I didn’t talk myself out of it in the morning.”

”Good,” said Sean.

”The notebook,” she said. ”My mother found it when I was unpacking. She read the twelve names and the debt amounts and the notes beside each entry.” A pause. ”She didn’t say anything for a long time. Then she said this is what you did and I said yes and she said you should keep it. Not give it back. Keep it.” Another pause. ”She said some things needed to stay with the person who made them.”

”She’s right,” said Sean.

”I know,” said Mia. ”I already decided that before she said it. But it was good to hear anyway.”

”Sean,” said Mia.

”Yeah.”

”Can I come by today,” she said. ”Not for anything specific. Just to.” She paused. ”I don’t know. Just to.”

”Come by the building at four,” he said. ”Makima will probably be cooking something.”

”She’s always cooking something,” said Mia.

”Yes,” said Sean. ”She is.”

—-----------------------

Mia arrived at three fifty-eight.

The building door opened before she knocked, which meant Makima had been watching the street, which was the kind of thing Makima would never admit to and which Mia clearly clocked immediately from the expression she had when she came through the entrance.

She said nothing about it.

Smart.

They sat in Makima’s kitchen and Makima put food on the table that she’d been preparing since noon by the smell of it and they talked the way they’d been talking since Sunday, easily, the specific ease of people who had been through something together that bypassed the usual stages of knowing each other.

Mia told Makima about Elena’s call. About Soo-Jin’s university applications. About Ji’s dog photo. Makima listened and asked the right questions and the afternoon did its thing around them.

At some point the conversation drifted to the garden project, the tenant with the binder, and Mia asked if she could see the plans, and Makima produced them because of course she had them, and Mia spent fifteen minutes looking at them with the notebook quality of her attention and said three things about the layout that made Makima write something down.

Sean watched this from across the table and thought about how specific the world was. How particular. A building on a street and a woman who ran it and a girl who’d kept a list for two months and an afternoon in a kitchen that smelled like food.

After dinner Makima went to answer a building tenant question and Sean and Mia were at the kitchen table with their tea.

She had her jacket on. She’d been about to leave when the question had come.

She looked at the table for a moment.

”Can I ask you something,” she said.

”Yes,” said Sean.

”You,” she said. ”Who you actually are. Not the money or the car or any of the surface things. The part underneath all of it that made you get out of that car and not do what marks usually do.” She held his gaze with the direct quality she brought to everything. ”I’ve been thinking about it since Sunday and I think I understand some of it. But not all of it.”

”What do you understand,” said Sean.

”I understand that you’re someone who builds things carefully and then uses them precisely,” she said. ”I understand that you care about outcomes more than credit. I understand that the people around you are there because you chose them and because they chose you back and that both sides of that matter to you.” She paused. ”What I don’t understand is why. What made you this specific version of yourself.”

Sean looked at her.

”That’s a longer conversation,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”I’m not asking for it tonight. I’m just telling you I noticed the question exists.”

”Okay,” said Sean.

”I also think,” she said, ”that the crisis is how I found out who you were. Not why I feel what I feel. Those are different things.” She held his gaze. ”The crisis was the context. You were you inside the context. That’s what I’m responding to.” She paused. ”So I want to be clear about that distinction before anything.”

Sean looked at her for a long moment.

”You thought about this for three days,” he said.

”Yes i did,” she said. ”Same session as the criminal law decision. I wrote both down so I wouldn’t talk myself out of them in the morning.”

”And you didn’t,” said Sean.

”I didn’t,” she confirmed.

”Mia,” he said.

”Yeah.” said Mia

”What you just described required more clarity than most people manage in months,” he said. ”You did it in three days at two in the morning.”

”I had a lot of time to think in a hotel room,” she said.

”That’s not what produced it,” said Sean.

She held his gaze. ”No,” she said. ”It’s not.”

A pause that had something specific in it. The specific quality of two people who had said what needed to be said and were sitting on the other side of having said it.

Then Mia leaned forward across the kitchen table and kissed him.
