Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”I figured you’d tell me when it was relevant,” said Sean.

”That’s exactly right,” she said quietly.

They walked out into the Saturday evening city, the air cooler than the afternoon, the neighborhood quiet in the specific way of places that hadn’t been discovered yet by the kind of energy that changed neighborhoods.

She kept hold of his hand.

”How was your week,” she said.

”Long,” he said. ”The thing I was working on moved somewhere good.”

”Tell me,” she said.

He told her. Not the full technical version. The human version. A company that built something real and someone trying to take it apart. A CFO who had written a paragraph about trust not being transferable and had almost deleted it. Seventeen people who had believed in something before it existed.

Olivia listened the way she listened when she was actually listening, with the complete attention she gave things that earned it.

When he finished she was quiet for a moment.

”The seventeen people,” she said. ”All of them held.”

”All of them,” said Sean.

”That’s not nothing,” she said.

”No,” he said. ”It isn’t.”

She looked at the street ahead. ”The CFO. Clara.”

”Yes.”

”She sounds like someone who’s very good at something,” said Olivia. Not pointedly. Just observing.

”She is,” said Sean.

Olivia nodded slowly. ”Is she.”

The two word question carrying several things inside it that Olivia wasn’t making into a bigger thing than it needed to be, which was its own kind of trust.

”She might be,” said Sean. ”I don’t know yet. Right now she’s the CFO of a company I’m trying to help.”

Olivia held his hand and looked at the street.

”Okay,” she said. Simply.

”You’re sure,” he said.

She looked at him. ”I’m not sure of everything. I’m sure about the important things.” She paused. ”The important thing is whether you’re honest with me. You just were. That’s what matters.”

He held her gaze.

”You’re remarkable,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”Kwon told me yesterday. He said it about the new formation set but I’m choosing to apply it more broadly.”

Sean smiled.

They found somewhere small and local for dinner, the kind of place that had three things on the menu and did all three correctly, and they ate and talked about things that had nothing to do with acquisitions or shareholder votes.

She told him about the label’s timeline for the debut. Three months of preparation, a specific release window Kwon had negotiated that she was not allowed to announce publicly yet but was extremely pleased about. Yuna had started choreographing her own material on the side and it was good, genuinely good, and Olivia was trying to figure out how to tell her that without it becoming a whole conversation.

He told her about Amara’s seventeen pages of policy analysis and the oversight body wanting to speak to her and Max’s expression when he’d relayed that information.

She laughed at the Max expression detail.

They paid and walked and the city did its Saturday evening things around them and at some point she stopped on a pavement and looked at him.

”I chose a good regular evening,” she said.

”You chose an excellent one,” said Sean.

”The film,” she said. ”My grandmother’s film. I’ve never taken anyone there before.” She held his gaze. ”I want you to know that.”

”I know,” said Sean. ”Thank you for it.”

She kissed him on the pavement, brief and warm, the real version.

Then she took his hand and they kept walking.

Then his phone buzzed in his pocket.

He glanced at it.

Makima.

Danny came down with something. Fever. I’m staying at his place tonight to look after him. Don’t worry about me. Have a good evening.

Sean stopped walking.

Olivia felt him stop and turned. She looked at his face before she asked anything, the way she always looked at his face first.

”What happened,” she said.

”Makima’s brother is sick,” he said. ”She’s staying with him tonight.”

”Poor Danny,” she said. And then, because she was Olivia and she noticed everything, ”You were going to go downstairs tonight.”

”Probably,” he said.

She held his hand a little tighter without saying anything about it.

He typed back.

I’ll miss you tonight. Tell Danny I said get well soon and that his subsections can wait as long as they need to.

He paused with his thumb over the keyboard for a moment.

Then he added:

I love you.

He put his phone in his pocket and looked at Olivia standing on the pavement in the Saturday evening with the city behind her.

She was looking at him with the expression she had when she was giving him a moment to be wherever he was before she asked anything else.

That specific patience of hers. The way she held space for people she loved.

”Hey,” he said.

”Hey,” she said.

”Do you want to come over,” he said. ”To my actual place. Not a hotel. My apartment.”

Olivia looked at him.

Something happened in her expression that was entirely unmanaged. The surprise arriving completely before she could do anything about it, the kind that came when something you’d been quietly hoping for without saying so out loud suddenly materialized without warning.

Her eyes went bright.

”Your place,” she said. Just those two words, said very quietly, like she was testing whether they were real.

”Yes,” said Sean.

She looked at him for a moment longer.

Then she laughed. Softly. The kind that came from somewhere genuine and surprised and warm all at once. She put her hand against his chest, the specific gesture she had, and looked up at him.

”You’ve never asked me that before,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”In all this time,” she said. ”Hotels and restaurants and concerts and Paris and—” She stopped. ”You’ve never asked me to just come home.”

”I’m asking now,” he said.

She looked at him for a long moment, something moving through her expression that was complicated and real and entirely hers.
