Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”Sean,” said Mia.

”Yeah.”

”You just figured something out,” she said.

”Yes,” said Sean.

”Is it good or bad,” she said.

He looked at her.

”It’s what we needed,” he said.

He texted Max.

Hargreave isn’t just the attorney. He’s a principal. Mia identified him as someone who came to the house on Meridian Street. He and Cole aren’t client and lawyer. They’re partners.

Max’s response came back fast.

That changes the approach significantly.

Yes, Sean typed. Call me tonight.

He put his phone away and looked at Mia sitting across from him with her notebook and her two months of details that other people would have missed.

”You said the small things,” she said.

”You delivered,” said Sean.

She looked at her notebook. Then at him. ”How close are we.”

”Closer than this morning,” said Sean.

She absorbed that. ”The twelve girls on the list.”

”Still on the list,” said Sean. ”Still coming.”

She nodded. Closed the notebook.

”Okay,” she said.

Sean stood up.

”Mia,” he said.

She looked up.

”The notebook,” he said. ”Keep writing. Everything.”

She looked at the notebook in her hands. Then back at him.

”I will,” she said.

He walked out into the Wednesday afternoon and called James.

One more day.

Then they moved.

Max called at nine Wednesday evening.

Sean was at his desk, the city outside doing its Wednesday night things, and he picked up on the first ring.

”Tell me,” said Sean.

”Hargreave and Cole have been partners since the beginning,” said Max. ”Not just on this operation. I found a property development company they co-founded eighteen years ago. That company built three residential complexes across two cities. All legitimate. All profitable.” A pause. ”The legitimate business gave them the infrastructure. The legal and property knowledge, the shell company architecture, the cross-city presence. The operation grew inside that infrastructure.”

”Parasitic,” said Sean.

”Exactly. The legitimate business is the host. The operation runs inside it and nobody looking at the outside sees anything worth looking at.” Max paused. ”The Thursday calls. Diana Osei’s four PM. I found the number she calls. It’s registered to a company that traces back to Hargreave and Associates’ corporate communications account.”

”She calls the firm directly,” said Sean.

”Every week,” said Max. ”Not Cole. Hargreave.”

Sean sat with that for a moment. Cole was visible enough that Diana had mentioned him by name once. Hargreave was the one she called every Thursday at four. Which meant the operational relationship was with Hargreave and Cole was the money and property layer above that.

”The financial pathway,” said Sean. ”How does the money move from the operations to them.”

”Through the property company,” said Max. ”The girls’ debt payments get consolidated at Diana’s level and transferred as quote management fees to a property management subsidiary. That subsidiary is owned by the development company Cole and Hargreave co-founded. From there it looks like legitimate business income.” He paused. ”It’s clean. Someone with real accounting knowledge built it.”

”Hargreave,” said Sean.

”My guess too,” said Max.

Sean looked at the window.

”The hospital data pipeline,” said Sean. ”That’s through the third party outreach company Cole’s entity owns. Which means Hargreave’s firm almost certainly did the legal structuring for that acquisition too.”

”I can confirm that by tomorrow morning,” said Max.

”Do it,” said Sean. ”I want the complete picture before Thursday afternoon.”

”You want to use the four PM call,” said Max.

”I want to understand it first,” said Sean.

A pause. ”Sean. This has to go formal at some point. The hospital data breach. The debt operation. The scale of it across four cities.” His voice had the quality it got when he was saying something he’d been sitting with for a while. ”I can build you everything you need to hand to the right people. But someone with authority has to be the one to actually close it.”

”I know,” said Sean. ”I’m not trying to handle this the way I handled Vivian. That was one person with specific leverage. This is an operation with multiple principals, multiple cities, girls in active situations.” He paused. ”I need someone I can trust with what we’ve built.”

”Do you have someone,” said Max.

Sean thought about it.

”I’m working on it,” he said.

Thursday

He called Elena Voss at seven Thursday morning.

She picked up on the third ring with the brisk alertness of someone already working. ”Mr. Miller.”

”I need to ask you something outside your usual practice area,” said Sean.

”My usual practice area has expanded considerably since I met you,” said Elena drily. ”Ask.”

”Do you know anyone in the regulatory or prosecutorial space you trust completely,” said Sean. ”Someone who handles financial crime and corporate fraud. Someone who doesn’t have connections to the property or corporate law world in this city that might create a conflict.”

A pause. The specific pause of someone running a careful assessment.

”Why,” said Elena.

”I’ve built a documentation package on an operation that runs across four cities,” said Sean. ”Debt coercion targeting young women. Hospital data being accessed illegally for recruitment. Financial structures designed to hide the income. Two principals, one of whom is a senior partner at a law firm with forty years of clean paper cover.”

The line was quiet for a moment.

”How complete is the documentation,” said Elena.

”By tomorrow morning it will be complete,” said Sean. ”Financial pathways. Shell company chains. The hospital data connection. Witness testimony from someone inside the operation.” He paused. ”The senior partner visited the houses where the girls were kept. We have an eyewitness identification.”

”Hargreave and Associates,” said Elena. Not a question.

Sean went still. ”You know them.”

”Marcus Hargreave reviewed opposing counsel documents in the Moyer case,” said Elena. ”I noticed it at the time. He had no obvious connection to Vivian Castellan’s operation and I filed it as coincidence.” A pause that had something sharp in it. ”It wasn’t coincidence.”

”No,” said Sean.

”He appeared in the Lockhart documentation,” said Elena. ”Early filings. I assumed he was peripheral.”
