Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

The same intelligence that built that had built this.

Not the same person.

The same school.

”How confident are you in this connection,” said Sean.

”The documents are solid,” said Max. ”Three independent sources confirming the same board member across the same entity. It’s not circumstantial.”

”Okay,” said Sean. ”Keep building. I need the full financial pathway from Lumière to the top of the chain. Every entity. Every transfer. Every name at every node.” He paused. ”And Max.”

”Yeah.”

”There’s a data connection I need you to look at. A hospital on the east side. Patient data appearing to feed into the recruitment pipeline for this operation.”

A silence.

”That’s,” Max started. Stopped. Started again. ”If that’s real that’s a significant additional crime on top of the operation itself.”

”I know,” said Sean.

”I’ll find it,” said Max. ”Or I’ll find the absence of it which is equally useful.”

”How long,” said Sean.

”For all of it,” said Max. ”Give me four days.”

”Three,” said Sean.

”Three and a half,” said Max.

”Three,” said Sean.

”You’re in a café somewhere doing this aren’t you,” said Max.

”Yes,” said Sean.

”Three days,” said Max. ”I’ll need coffee and I’ll need Amara not to know what I’m doing because she will want to help and her help will involve reorganizing my files.”

”Take her to the restaurant Tuesday,” said Sean. ”That buys you Tuesday evening clear.”

”The reservation is at seven thirty,” said Max. ”Window table. I confirmed this morning.”

”Good,” said Sean.

”Sean,” said Max.

”Yeah.”

”The Lockhart connection,” said Max. ”Are you going to tell Vanessa.”

Sean looked at the street.

Vanessa had been directly damaged by one branch of this network already. Dominique Voss was a separate matter entirely but the broader context, the fact that the network Sean was now investigating had a thread that connected back to the same world that had produced the Lockhart scheme, was something she was going to need to know about eventually.

”Not yet,” said Sean. ”When I have the full picture.”

”Understood,” said Max.

He ended the call and went back inside.

Mia was sitting exactly where he’d left her, her cold coffee in front of her, looking at something on the table that turned out to be nothing, just the specific unfocused gaze of someone sitting inside their own thinking.

She looked up when he sat down.

”What did your colleague find,” she said.

”More than I expected,” said Sean.

”Bigger than the city,” she said. Not a question.

”Much bigger,” said Sean.

She held his gaze. ”How much bigger.”

”Multiple cities,” said Sean. ”Possibly more we haven’t mapped yet. A financial structure that goes several layers above Terrence Cole and connects to other networks we haven’t fully traced.”

She processed that.

”Terrence Cole,” she said.

”You know that name,” said Sean. The specific quality of her stillness when he’d said it.

”I’ve heard Diana say it once,” said Mia. ”On the phone. She didn’t say his full name. Just Cole. But the way she said it was the same way she said him.” She looked at the table. ”So he’s the one above her.”

”He appears to be,” said Sean.

”And above him,” said Mia.

”That’s what we’re still building,” said Sean.

She was quiet for a moment, sitting with the full scale of what she’d stumbled into two months ago when she’d answered an ad online.

”Mia,” said Sean.

”Yeah.”

”Soo-Jin,” he said. ”I need to understand her specific situation well enough to get her out without triggering a response before we’re ready to move on the whole operation. Tell me her exact debt amount, how they communicate with her, where she is during the day, and whether she has anyone outside the operation she fully trusts.”

Mia looked at him.

”You’re going to get her out first,” she said. ”While you build the rest.”

”Yes,” said Sean.

”How,” said Mia. ”If you move on her situation they’ll know someone is disrupting the operation.”

”Not if it looks like her debt was simply cleared through the standard payment channel,” said Sean. ”If the money arrives through a pathway that looks like a legitimate settlement and her account is marked as paid in full, she’s released without anyone questioning why.”

Mia stared at him. ”You can make that happen.”

”My colleague can find the payment pathway,” said Sean. ”I can put money into it. From their perspective a debt got paid. Nothing unusual.”

”They’ll still know something happened if she just leaves,” said Mia.

”She doesn’t leave immediately,” said Sean. ”She continues exactly as before for two weeks. But her debt is gone and she knows it’s gone and she knows help is coming.” He held Mia’s gaze. ”She finishes her studies for Wednesday. She takes the test. And in two weeks when the operation comes down she walks out.”

Mia looked at him for a long moment.

”You’ve thought about this already,” she said.

”On the phone call just now,” said Sean. ”While Max was talking.”

She shook her head slightly. Not dismissively. The specific head movement of someone encountering something they’re still in the process of believing is real.

”Tell me about Soo-Jin,” said Sean.

Mia told him.

By the time she finished the café had emptied to its mid-morning quiet and the list with twelve names was in Sean’s pocket and the debt amounts were in his phone and Soo-Jin’s situation was mapped clearly enough that he could see the path through it.

He paid for the coffees.

[32 dollars spent]

[Balance: $24,394,565]

[64 dollars received]

[New Balance: $24,394,629]

The 2x baseline. Clean and unchanged. He put his card away and looked at Mia across the table.

”What happens to me,” she said. ”While you’re building the picture and getting Soo-Jin out.”

”You stay at the hotel,” said Sean. ”You don’t contact anyone from inside the operation. You don’t go near Meridian Street or the agency or any of the three road stunt locations.” He held her gaze. ”And you tell me anything else you remember. Anything small. Things that seemed irrelevant at the time. The small things are often where the full picture is.”
