Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Vanessa looked at it for a long moment.

She said something quiet to Marc.

Marc looked at the image. Then at Vanessa. Then at Sean across the courtyard. He said something back that made Vanessa press her lips together briefly.

She came to where Sean was standing.

”What did he say,” said Sean.

Vanessa looked at the courtyard wall. ”He said the image works because the subject is clearly thinking about someone he cares about. That it gives the image a quality that you can’t direct into someone. That it either exists or it doesn’t.” She paused. ”He asked me if I knew who the person was.”

”What did you tell him,” said Sean.

”I told him yes,” said Vanessa. Simply.

Sean looked at her.

She looked at him.

”I told him yes,” she said again, quietly, which was an answer to a different question than the one Marc had asked, and both of them understood that.

Sean paid Marc and his team when the equipment was packed, the specific professional conclusion of a session that had produced what it came to produce.

[22,000 dollars spent]

[Balance: $24,348,977]

[44,000 dollars received]

[New Balance: $24,392,977]

The 2x baseline running clean and consistent under everything else.

Marc shook Sean’s hand when he left with the specific directness of someone making a professional assessment rather than a social gesture.

”The campaign will be very good,” Marc said, in the English he’d been saving for direct communication. ”Come back to Paris sometime. I have other projects that would benefit from what you have in front of a camera.”

”Thank you,” said Sean.

Marc nodded once and walked out through the passage with his assistant and the equipment and the two hours of images that Vanessa would spend the next week selecting from.

The courtyard was quiet.

Just the two of them and the Sunday morning light doing its particular thing to the stone walls.

Vanessa stood in the middle of the space and looked at it, the way she’d looked at the runway after the show, with the expression of someone standing inside something they’d been building toward and recognizing it now that they were inside it.

”This is the best campaign I’ve ever shot,” she said. Not boasting. Just a factual assessment delivered quietly.

”You haven’t seen the full edit yet,” said Sean.

”I’ve seen enough,” said Vanessa. ”I know what it is from what Marc’s face was doing at the south wall setup.” She looked at Sean. ”He’s been shooting fashion for fifteen years and he said don’t do anything just be where you are and you did exactly that and apparently most people can’t.” She paused. ”Can I ask you something.”

”Yes,” said Sean.

”What were you thinking,” she said. ”At the south wall. The first shot. The one Marc said was already the campaign.”

Sean looked at the south wall of the courtyard, the morning light still landing on it at the angle that had produced whatever Marc had seen in the frame.

”I was thinking about someone standing behind a monitor,” he said. ”Watching something she made exist in the conditions it was made for.”

Vanessa was quiet.

”I was thinking,” said Sean, ”that making something real over eight months and then watching it on a runway in Paris and then watching it again through a camera lens in a courtyard on a Sunday morning is what it looks like when someone has been doing the right thing long enough for it to arrive somewhere.”

Vanessa looked at him for a long moment.

Then she crossed the courtyard to where he was standing and put her hand against his jaw the way she had in the fitting room when she was adjusting the collar except this time there was nothing to adjust and she wasn’t pretending there was.

She looked at him from close range with the expression that had been underneath every composed professional version of herself since the fitting room, the version that existed before any of the management arrived.

”Sean,” she said.

”Yeah,” he said.

”Come on,” she said softly. ”I know somewhere for coffee before the flight.”

She took his hand.

They walked out of the courtyard together through the narrow passage and into the Paris Sunday, the city warm and indifferent around them, and neither of them said anything for a while because the courtyard had already said everything that needed saying and the morning was for something different now.

Something quieter.

Something that belonged to the last few hours of a Paris trip that had held considerably more than either of them had planned for and had arrived somewhere neither of them had planned for either.

The flight was at four.

They had time.

—-------------

The coffee place was on a corner in the fifth arrondissement, three tables outside and two inside, the kind of place that had decided that was enough a long time ago and hadn’t reconsidered.

Vanessa ordered without looking at the board. The woman behind the counter responded with the warmth of someone who recognized a returning face, and they exchanged something brief in French that ended with the woman laughing softly before turning to the machine.

They sat outside.

The Sunday was warm enough for it, just, the Paris late morning doing the specific thing it did on days that weren’t trying to impress anyone.

”She recognized you,” said Sean.

”I come every trip,” said Vanessa. ”She gave me the wifi password once without being asked. I’ve been loyal ever since.”

”That’s a serious basis for a relationship,” said Sean.

”In Paris the best ones are built on small consistent things,” said Vanessa. ”She knows I’ll be here for forty minutes and then gone for months. That suits both of us perfectly.”

The coffee arrived. Small cups. The dense unhurried kind that didn’t apologize for itself.

Sean drank some and looked at the street and let the morning settle around them without filling it with anything.

Vanessa was quiet too for a moment, which with her meant she was thinking about something specific rather than simply being quiet.
