Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Sean smiled.

”We’ll have more time,” he said. ”I promise. But right now we need to catch a flight before Paris decides to keep us permanently.”

Vanessa looked at him for a moment. Then she laughed, the genuine one, slightly breathless, and pressed her face briefly against his shoulder before sitting up with the specific efficiency of someone who had decided that efficiency was now required.

”You’re right,” she said. ”We need to move.”

She kissed him once more before she got up. Not quickly. The kind that said everything the last two hours had said and added a postscript about what came after Paris.

Then she was on her feet and moving with the focused energy of someone who had a flight in ninety minutes and understood exactly what ninety minutes required.

Sean got up and dressed.

There was something specific about the quality of the room while they both got ready, moving around each other without discussion, the natural rhythm of two people who had arrived somewhere new in the last few hours and were carrying it differently from how they’d carried everything before it.

Vanessa stood at the mirror fixing her hair with the precise efficient movements he recognized from the store, the professional composure reassembling itself, except it wasn’t quite the same version as before. Something underneath it was different. Lighter. The specific lightness of someone who had put down something they’d been carrying for a long time and hadn’t picked it back up.

She caught him watching her in the mirror.

”What,” she said.

”Nothing,” said Sean.

She held his gaze in the reflection for a moment. Then she went back to her hair and almost smiled and didn’t say anything else, which was its own kind of answer.

They packed quickly. Vanessa with the organized precision of someone who had done this many times. Sean with the efficiency of someone who had packed light enough that there wasn’t much to organize.

At the door she turned and looked at the room one more time. The Paris afternoon through the curtains. The city outside that had held considerably more than either of them had planned for.

”Ready,” she said. Not a question.

”Ready,” said Sean.

They walked out.

The Airport

James had arranged the car on the Paris end through the same network that had produced Laurent, and it was waiting at the hotel entrance when they came through the door, a driver with a sign and the specific professional patience of someone accustomed to travelers who were running slightly behind schedule.

They weren’t running behind. Vanessa had calculated the margin correctly, which surprised nobody.

In the car she sat beside him and looked out the window at Paris doing its Sunday afternoon things, the city moving at the particular pace it moved at this hour, and her hand found his on the seat between them without her looking away from the window.

Sean looked at their hands.

Then out his own window.

The city slid past and neither of them said anything for a while and the not-saying-anything was the most comfortable version of it they’d found all weekend.

At some point Vanessa said quietly, ”Thank you for this weekend.”

”You don’t need to thank me,” said Sean.

”I know,” she said. ”I’m saying it anyway.” She glanced at him. ”You let me have a Paris trip that was completely unlike every Paris trip I’ve had before. That’s not nothing.”

”It wasn’t nothing,” he agreed.

She looked at their hands. ”When we land,” she said.

”Yeah.”

”Normal life,” she said.

”Normal life,” said Sean. ”But different from the normal life before Friday morning.”

She looked at him. ”Different how.”

”The store is the same,” said Sean. ”The collection is the same. Sarah is the same.” He paused. ”Everything is the same except you said the true thing on a corner in the fifth arrondissement and I said it back and now it’s been said and that doesn’t unsay.”

Vanessa was quiet for a moment.

”No,” she said softly. ”It doesn’t.”

She settled against his shoulder for the rest of the drive and he let her and the city finished passing and the airport arrived and the weekend became the thing it was going to be for whatever came after it.

The Gate

The flight was on time.

They cleared security with the specific efficiency of experienced travelers and found the gate with forty minutes to spare, which was exactly the margin Vanessa had built into the timeline when she booked everything, because of course it was.

They sat near the window where the plane was visible on the tarmac, being prepared with the unhurried precision of something that had its own schedule and was going to keep it regardless.

Vanessa had her phone out, scrolling through something, and Sean looked at his.

The system notification he hadn’t opened in the car was waiting.

He opened it now.

[VANESSA CHEN — FAVORABILITY: 100]

[MAXIMUM THRESHOLD REACHED]

[Third Bind Slot: Confirmed and Stable]

[10x Rebate: Fully Active]

[Connection Resonance: Now operational in proximity]

[THE SYSTEM NOTES:]

[Three bonds at maximum threshold simultaneously confirmed.]

[Makima — 100. Olivia — 100. Vanessa — 100.]

[This configuration has not previously occurred.]

[Combined passive resonance when all three are in proximity: $11,991 per hour]

[The system has no further notation to make about this.]

[Some things are beyond notation.]

Sean read the final line twice.

Some things are beyond notation.

He put his phone in his pocket.

Vanessa glanced at him. ”System again?”

He looked at her. ”You know about that.”

”I know there’s something,” she said. ”I’ve been watching you look at your phone in specific ways for three days. It’s not messages. The expression is different from messages.” She looked at him steadily. ”I filed it alongside the Business Insight question and the other things I’m going to ask you about eventually when you’re ready to explain them.”

Sean looked at her.

”You’re very perceptive,” he said.

”I’m a designer,” she said. ”I read what’s already there. It’s the same skill.” She paused. ”Was it good news.”

He thought about three bonds at maximum threshold simultaneously. About a passive resonance rate the system had never calculated before. About a final notification that had decided some things were beyond its notation.

”Yes,” he said. ”Very good news.”

She looked at him for a moment longer with the evaluating attention that never fully went away regardless of the context.

Then she nodded once and went back to her phone.

The gate opened twenty minutes later.

They boarded together, side by side, and found their seats and settled in with the ease of two people who had now done this in both directions and had found that the return felt different from the going, heavier with everything the going had contained.

The plane taxied. The city appeared through the window one final time, the specific aerial view of something that had been several other things before becoming Paris and was going to keep being Paris long after this particular weekend had settled into memory.

Vanessa looked out the window.

Sean looked at her.

She turned and found him looking.

”What,” she said.

”Nothing,” he said. ”Just thinking.”

”About what.”

”About a woman who made a suit for a person she hadn’t met yet,” he said. ”And what that says about how she sees the world.”

Vanessa held his gaze.

Then she reached over and took his hand the way she had in the car on the way to the airport, simply and without announcement.

”Get some sleep,” she said. ”It’s a seven hour flight.”

”You first,” he said.

She almost smiled. ”I never sleep on flights.”

”You slept on the way here,” said Sean.

She looked at him. ”You were supposed to pretend you didn’t notice that.”

”I noticed everything,” said Sean.

She pressed her lips together. Looked at the seat back in front of her. Then at their hands.

”Sean,” she said quietly.

”Yeah.”

”Paris,” she said. Just that. The whole weekend compressed into one word.

”Paris,” he said.

She settled her head against his shoulder.

The plane climbed into the sky.

Below them the city shrank to the specific aerial version of itself, then to the landscape around it, then to cloud cover, and then to nothing
