Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”By watching me eat,” said Amara.

”You haven’t eaten properly in months,” said Max.

”And now I am,” said Amara. ”You can stop monitoring it.”

”I’m not monitoring,” said Max.

”Max,” said Amara.

”Yeah.”

”Thank you,” she said. The same direct delivery Sean had seen her use for everything important. Just the true thing said plainly. ”For the bone marrow and the drives and the bookshelf and tonight.” She held his gaze. ”All of it.”

Max looked at his plate briefly.

”You’re my sister,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”That’s why it means what it means.”

The table was quiet for a moment.

Then Amara picked up her wine and looked around at all of them.

”I’d like to make a toast,” she said.

Nobody objected.

”To window tables,” said Amara. ”And to people who show up before they’re asked to.” She held her glass up. ”And to the cheese course, which I intend to approach with the seriousness it deserves.”

Max pressed his lips together.

Makima smiled the real one.

Sean raised his glass.

They touched glasses, the four of them, in a French restaurant twelve blocks from a hospital ward where Dr. Grace was probably still working past the end of her shift and Caleb was probably still keeping his drawings under his pillow and the fourteen families had one less thing pressing down on them.

The cheese course arrived.

It was exactly as significant as Amara had said it would be.

Sean paid the bill when it came, quietly, without disrupting the conversation Amara was having with Makima about the specific policy gap that had allowed the debt structure at Lumière to exist without regulatory attention, which was a conversation that had apparently found its own momentum.

James drove them home in the specific quiet of an evening that had given everyone in the car exactly what they’d needed from it.

When he dropped Amara at the address she was staying at, a cousin’s apartment three blocks from the hospital for the first weeks of her recovery, she got out and turned back to the car.

She looked at Sean through the open window.

”The investigation,” she said.

”Yes,” said Sean.

”Three days,” she said. ”Max told me there’s a timeline. I’m not asking for details.” She paused. ”I’m asking if the girls are going to be okay.”

Sean looked at her.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze for a moment.

”Good,” she said. She looked at Max who was getting out to walk her to the door. ”Come back tomorrow. I have things to reorganize.”

”Your cousin’s apartment doesn’t need reorganizing,” said Max.

”Everything needs reorganizing,” said Amara. ”It’s a matter of degree.”

She walked to the door.

Max followed.

Sean watched them through the window, Max holding the door for his sister who was carrying the heavy bag of research materials and walking without any of the careful conservation of energy that had characterized her movements in the hospital.

She walked like someone who had somewhere to be.

James pulled away from the curb.

Makima was beside Sean in the back, her shoulder against his, the way it always was now.

”She’s remarkable,” said Makima.

”Yes,” said Sean.

”The section she mentioned,” said Makima. ”About me. I want to know what’s in it.”

”You’ll have to ask her,” said Sean.

”I’m going to,” said Makima. ”She said it was accurate. I want to know what accurate looks like from someone who’s been watching from a hospital room.”

”Probably very accurate,” said Sean.

”That’s what I’m afraid of,” said Makima.

Sean looked at her.

She was smiling.

”Lets go home too” Said Sean while extending his hands to Makima with a smile shown on his face.

Makima smile as she held his hands as they both walked towards where Sean Cars was.

Wednesday

Sean woke up thinking about the law firm.

Max had sent a name at two in the morning, a single text with no context, the way he sent things when he found something significant and couldn’t wait until a reasonable hour.

Hargreave and Associates. Property and corporate law. Three cities. Same firm that filed development permits for Cole’s property entities. Partner on record: Marcus Hargreave. He also appears in the Lockhart documentation from the original forty year scheme. Not as a principal. As the filing attorney on two of Harlan Cross’s early acquisitions.

Marcus Hargreave had touched both things. The Lockhart scheme from the beginning and Cole’s operation now. That wasn’t a coincidence. That was a career built at a very specific intersection of legitimate legal work and illegitimate structural cover.

He texted Max. How old is Hargreave.

The response came back in three minutes. Sixty-one. Still practicing. Senior partner. No disciplinary record.

Sixty-one and clean on paper for forty years of working at that intersection. That was someone who was either very careful or very connected or both.

Sean got dressed and went downstairs.

=======

He called Mia at eight.

She answered on the second ring, which meant she’d been awake.

”How are you,” he said.

”Fine,” she said. Then, after a pause: ”Better than fine. I slept again.” She said it the same way she’d said it Monday morning, like it still surprised her.

”Anything you’ve remembered since Monday,” said Sean. ”Anything small.”

She was quiet for a moment. ”One thing. Diana Osei takes a call every Thursday at exactly four PM. She clears the office for it. Every week without exception.” A pause. ”I always assumed it was Cole. But given what you told me about the firm, I’m wondering if it’s someone else.”

Sean filed it. ”Thursday at four.”

”Every week,” said Mia.

”Good,” said Sean. ”How is Soo-Jin.”

”She texted me through the house group chat last night,” said Mia. ”Said she’d had a good day.” A pause. ”She only ever says she had a good day when something specific happened. She’s not someone who says things for no reason.”
