Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Élite Fashion had the particular quality it always had in the mid-afternoon, the store floor quiet, the lighting doing its precise work on the collection pieces, everything arranged with the specific intentionality of somewhere that understood presentation was its own form of communication.

Sean pushed through the door

Sarah Kim was standing near the accessories wall doing something with a display arrangement that had clearly been fine before she started adjusting it.

She looked up when Sean came in.

”Mr. Miller,” she said, with the professional warmth of someone who had absolutely not been watching the door for the last forty minutes. ”Ms. Chen is expecting you. I’ll let her know you’re here.”

”Thank you, Sarah,” said Sean.

Sarah disappeared toward the back with the specific efficiency of someone who had a secondary purpose for going in that direction and was committed to making the primary purpose look convincing.

Sean looked at the collection pieces near the entrance. New things had appeared since his last visit, pieces with the structural quality of the Paris collection but refined further, the architecture of them sharper. He was looking at a deep charcoal overcoat with the kind of collar that made every other collar look like it hadn’t thought the problem through when Vanessa came out from the back.

She was wearing something from the Paris collection, a fitted piece in deep ivory that had the same architectural quality as everything she’d been developing, and her composure was exactly where it always was, precise and complete and doing slightly more work than usual underneath the surface.

”Sean,” she said. Using his name rather than Mr. Miller, which she’d been doing since the Paris invitation and which she didn’t appear to have noticed she’d done.

”Vanessa,” said Sean.

”Thank you for coming in today,” she said. ”Everything is ready.” She glanced at the pieces he’d been looking at. ”Come through. The suit is in the fitting room.”

She led him past the consultation area, past the section where the Paris collection pieces hung in their precise arrangements, to the private fitting room at the back of the store. It was a larger space than the standard changing rooms, with a raised platform, full-length mirrors on three sides, and the specific lighting that made everything look like a decision.

On a stand in the center of the room, the suit.

Sean looked at it.

It was dark navy, not quite black, the specific shade that existed between the two and committed fully to neither. The cut was architectural in the way Vanessa’s best work was, structured without being rigid, the kind of garment that had clearly been made for one person’s specific measurements and no one else’s. The lapels were narrow. The fabric had a texture that caught the light differently depending on angle. On a separate stand beside it, a shirt in deep charcoal and a tie that matched neither and somehow completed both.

”Try it on,” said Vanessa.

Sean changed.

When he came out of the dressing area and stepped onto the platform, the three mirrors showing him from every angle simultaneously, there was a moment of the specific quality that happened when something had been made correctly for its purpose.

He looked like someone who belonged in Paris.

Vanessa stood in front of him with the focused attention of someone who had spent eight months building toward this specific moment and was now checking whether the execution matched the vision. She moved around him once, slowly, her eyes running over the lines of the jacket, the fall of the trousers, the way the collar sat.

She reached up and adjusted the lapel. Fractionally. Then the collar of the shirt underneath, her fingers precise and efficient, the touch of someone working rather than performing working.

She stepped back.

Looked at him.

And the professional composure, which had survived every fitting and every collection review and twenty-three years of David Harlan’s negotiating table, did the specific thing it had been doing since the Paris invitation whenever Sean was in her immediate vicinity.

It cracked. Just slightly. Just enough.

Her eyes moved over the full picture of him standing on the platform in the suit she’d made, the navy against the fitting room lighting, and she said nothing for a moment.

”Vanessa,” said Sean.

”Yes,” she said, coming back from wherever she’d been.

”The suit,” said Sean.

”It’s,” she started. ”Yes. The cut is exactly what I wanted.” She was using the professional language but her voice had a slightly different quality than the professional language usually carried. ”The shoulder line is correct. The trouser break is precise.” She looked at the jacket again. ”You wear it like you’ve worn things like this your entire life.”

”I haven’t,” said Sean.

”I know,” said Vanessa. ”That’s what makes it interesting.”

She moved to the second stand and lifted the other garment, her own piece for Paris, a deep ivory structured jacket with the same architectural quality as the suit, and held them beside each other. The two pieces together made something that was clearly designed in conversation with each other without being identical, the same intelligence expressed twice in different registers.

”Together,” said Vanessa. ”That’s what I was building toward. The two pieces as a pair.” She looked at them both. ”It works.”

”It works very well,” said Sean.

She looked at him on the platform, the navy suit, the way he stood in it, and something crossed her expression that was more specific than professional satisfaction.

”Sean,” she said.

”Yes.”

”Has anyone ever suggested to you that you should model.”

Sean looked at her.

”Professionally,” said Vanessa, with the composure of someone making a professional inquiry. ”I have a campaign for the Paris collection that will run internationally following the showcase. I’ve been trying to find the right face for it for three months.” She paused. ”You would be exactly right for it.”

”I have no modelling experience,” said Sean.

”That’s not what I asked,” said Vanessa.
