Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”I was beside you,” said Sean.

She looked at him one more time with that unmanaged expression and then looked at the reception behind him and then back at him and something settled in her, visibly, the specific settling of someone who had decided something without announcing the decision.

His phone buzzed in his pocket.

He glanced at it discreetly.

The system.

[Vanessa Chen — Favorability: 85]

[Significant threshold approaching]

He put his phone away.

”The reception,” said Vanessa. ”I should go back. There are people I need to speak to and the press window is limited.” She paused. ”But Sean.”

”Yeah.”

”After this is finished,” she said. ”Tonight. Not the industry dinner. Just us. I want to go somewhere quiet and I want to not talk about the show or the collection or Dominique or any of it.” She held his gaze. ”I want to sit somewhere in this city and have a conversation that has nothing to do with any of the things today held.”

”Okay,” said Sean.

”I know a place,” said Vanessa.

”I believe you,” said Sean. ”You always know a place.”

Something crossed her face that was the closest thing to the completely unguarded smile he’d seen from her. Not the composed professional version. The actual one.

”Go back to the reception,” she said. ”Try the wine on the second tray, not the first one. The first tray is the standard offering. The second tray is what they put out when the host actually cares what people are drinking.”

She turned and walked back into the reception.

Sean watched her step back into the room and watched the professional composure reassemble itself as she reached the first cluster of people who wanted to talk to her, and watched how it was different now from the version he’d seen at the start of the evening, the same composure but with something underneath it that hadn’t been there before.

He found the second tray.

She was right about the wine.

He stood near the edge of the room and watched the industry do its post-show things around Vanessa Chen, the press and the buyers and the industry figures all finding their way to her at some point during the next hour, and thought about a storage room and a café and a runway and a window conversation and the specific shape of a day that had asked a great deal of everyone in it and had produced something better than what was planned.

Laurent appeared beside him at some point.

”She’s handling the room well,” said Laurent, looking at Vanessa across the reception.

”She handles every room well,” said Sean.

”Not like this,” said Laurent. ”I’ve seen her at two previous Paris events. She was professional both times. Effective.” He paused. ”Tonight is different. Whatever happened today changed something.”

”A lot happened today,” said Sean.

”Yes,” said Laurent. ”But it wasn’t the sabotage that changed it.” He looked at Sean briefly with the evaluating attention of someone who had spent twenty years reading rooms and people in them. ”It was how the sabotage was handled.”

Sean said nothing.

”I’ll send you the final documentation tonight,” said Laurent. ”Everything secured and filed. You’ll have it before midnight.”

”Thank you,” said Sean. ”For today. All of it.”

”It was interesting work,” said Laurent, and there was something genuine in how he said it, the specific satisfaction of someone for whom interesting work was the highest available category. ”Enjoy your evening, Mr. Miller.”

He moved away into the reception and disappeared the way people who were very good at their jobs disappeared, into the background without a visible transition.

Sean looked across the room.

Vanessa was speaking with the woman from the press, and as he watched she said something that made the journalist stop writing and look up from her notebook with the expression of someone who had just received a better quote than they’d expected.

Sean almost smiled.

He finished his wine and waited for the reception to wind down.

Tonight she’d said.

Somewhere quiet.

A conversation that had nothing to do with any of the things today had held.

He was looking forward to it.

Later

The industry dinner was in a private room adjacent to the venue, and Vanessa stayed for the first forty-five minutes, which was the amount of time that professional obligation required and which she timed with the specific efficiency of someone who had calculated the minimum viable presence and honored it precisely.

At nine forty-seven she appeared at Sean’s elbow.

”Ready,” she said.

”Ready,” said Sean.

They walked out of the venue together into the Paris night, the city cool and lit and doing its Saturday evening things entirely without reference to anything that had happened inside that building today.

Vanessa walked with her coat pulled close, the folder with her introduction remarks under one arm, the specific energy of someone who had just completed something enormous and was in the first minutes of whatever came after enormous things.

”Where are we going,” said Sean.

”There’s a bridge,” said Vanessa. ”About fifteen minutes from here on foot. I used to walk there every trip. Sit on a bench on the south side. Watch the water.” She paused. ”I haven’t done it in three years. The last few trips there’s always been too much that needed doing.”

”And tonight,” said Sean.

”Tonight everything that needed doing is done,” said Vanessa.

They walked.

The Paris streets at this hour had the quality they’d had on the drive in from the airport, the city settling into its later version of itself, the tourist energy receding and the local energy taking its place, quieter and more specific.

Sean walked beside her and said nothing and let the city be the conversation for a while.

After ten minutes she said, ”Tell me something about yourself that isn’t related to money or buildings or protecting things.”

”That’s a narrow brief,” said Sean.

”You gave me a narrow brief on the plane,” said Vanessa. ”The actual beginning. Not the professional version.”

”I did,” said Sean. ”Alright.” He thought about it seriously. ”I cried at an animated film about a dog. Alone in my apartment. I’m not going to tell you which one.”
