Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

”She read the email,” said Sean.

”I think so,” said Mia.

”Good,” said Sean. ”Stay at the hotel today. I’ll come by this afternoon.”

He ended the call and made coffee and looked at the city outside his window.

Thursday at four. Marcus Hargreave. A law firm connecting two separate operations across forty years.

The picture was getting cleaner.

—-----------

Max called at ten.

”The hospital data connection,” he said, without preamble. ”I found it.”

”How,” said Sean.

”There’s a third-party patient outreach company contracted by the east side hospital,” said Max. ”They handle appointment reminders, follow-up surveys, that kind of thing. Routine and legitimate on the surface.” A pause. ”The company is owned through a shell that connects to one of Cole’s entities. They have legitimate access to patient contact information for the outreach work. And somewhere in that access, specific profiles are being filtered out and passed along.”

Sean sat down.

”The criteria,” said Sean.

”Young women between sixteen and twenty-five,” said Max. ”Patients or family members of patients with significant outstanding medical costs.” He paused. ”They’re finding people at the exact moment they’re most financially vulnerable. Before they’ve had time to process the situation. When a legitimate-looking opportunity feels like the answer to a problem they don’t know how to solve.”

Sean looked at the window.

The machine was more precise than he’d understood. Not random recruitment. Targeted. Finding specific people through access they’d paid legitimate money to acquire through a legitimate company that was secretly theirs.

”How many hospitals,” said Sean.

”Three confirmed,” said Max. ”One in each city where the operation runs.” A pause. ”Sean, this is going to require more than taking down the local operation.”

”I know,” said Sean.

”This needs to go somewhere official eventually,” said Max. ”The hospital data breach alone is a regulatory issue that requires formal reporting.”

”Eventually,” said Sean. ”Not yet. Not before I understand the full chain and have everything documented completely.”

”How much longer,” said Max.

”Thursday,” said Sean. ”The law firm partner. I want to understand his role before anything moves.” He paused. ”Can you find his direct client relationship to Cole? Not the shell company filings. Something that connects Hargreave to Cole personally.”

”Give me today,” said Max.

Sean put his phone down and thought about Mia in a hotel room and Soo-Jin in a shared house on Meridian Street and eleven other names in two colors of ink.

========

He went to the hotel at two.

Mia was in the lobby again, coffee again, same chair, except today she had a notebook open on her knee and was writing something in it with the focused concentration he recognized from Amara’s notebook, the specific posture of someone organizing their thoughts deliberately.

She looked up when he came in.

”You’re writing,” he said.

”Everything I remember,” she said. ”You said the small things. I’ve been going back through the last two months trying to pull out everything I noticed but didn’t think mattered.” She held up the notebook. ”There’s more than I expected.”

Sean sat down across from her.

”Tell me,” he said.

She talked for an hour. Details she’d dismissed at the time. The way Grace collected on Sundays, always alone, always the same gray Honda, but the Honda had a parking permit sticker on the windscreen for a specific building downtown that wasn’t residential. The fact that Diana Osei always wore the same watch, expensive, the kind that would have been a gift rather than a purchase given what Sean now knew about the operation’s financial structure. The man who had come to the house on Meridian Street twice in the three months Mia had been there, well-dressed, fifties, who had walked through the rooms without acknowledging the girls directly, like they were inventory rather than people.

”The man,” said Sean. ”Describe him more specifically.”

She described him.

Sean looked at the description and thought about Max’s file. Sixty-one years old. Senior partner. No disciplinary record.

”The watch Diana wears,” he said. ”What kind.”

”I’m not someone who knows watches,” said Mia. ”But it had a blue face. And a specific logo I’ve seen before.” She thought about it. ”A crown.”

Sean looked at her.

Rolex. The Datejust with the blue dial was a specific gift market piece. The kind given to people who performed significantly within an organization.

”You’re sure about the crown,” he said.

”I notice details,” said Mia. ”It’s how I’ve been surviving this.”

Sean looked at her for a moment. She had Amara’s specific quality, the particular intelligence of someone who had been in a constrained situation long enough to turn observation into a functional skill.

”The man who came to the house,” he said. ”Did Diana’s posture change when he was there.”

Mia thought about it. ”She stood differently,” she said. ”She’s normally controlled. When he was there she was performing controlled. Those are different things.”

”Yes,” said Sean. ”They are.”

He thought about the description again. Fifties. Well-dressed. Coming through the rooms like the girls were inventory.

He thought about Marcus Hargreave. Sixty-one.

People looked younger than their age sometimes.

He texted Max. Find a photo of Marcus Hargreave. Current one.

Max sent it in four minutes.

Sean showed his phone to Mia.

She looked at it.

Her expression did something specific.

”That’s him,” she said. Quietly. ”That’s the man who came to the house.”

Sean looked at the photo of the senior partner of Hargreave and Associates, property and corporate law, three cities, no disciplinary record, forty years at a very specific intersection.

”Okay,” said Sean.

He put his phone in his pocket and sat with what he now had.

Hargreave wasn’t just the filing attorney. He was a principal. He came to the houses. He was visible enough to the operation that Diana Osei’s posture changed when he walked in.

Which meant the law firm wasn’t just providing cover.

The law firm was the connection. The thing that held the network together across cities and operations and decades. Hargreave and Associates was the spine.
