Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers

Kwon was already in the lobby.

He was standing near the reception desk with the specific stillness of someone who had been in enough of these rooms to have stopped being impressed by them, his posture precise, his paper list folded in his breast pocket, his attention on the elevator as though watching it would make it move faster.

He looked at Sean when he came through the entrance.

”You’re early,” said Kwon.

”So are you,” said Sean.

”I’m always early,” said Kwon. ”It’s professional.” He looked at Sean for a moment. ”Olivia is upstairs with the preliminary team. They started the document review fifteen minutes ago.” He paused. ”The Thursday meeting was about whether they wanted her. This meeting is about what they get to keep of her. That’s a different conversation entirely.”

”What’s their opening position,” said Sean.

”Standard debut package,” said Kwon. ”Which means favorable to them in eleven of seventeen material clauses. I’ve flagged nine. The other two I’m willing to concede early to create goodwill.” He looked at Sean with the attention he gave things that actually mattered. ”I need you to read the room. I’ll handle the language. You tell me when something shifts.”

”Understood,” said Sean.

Kwon turned toward the elevator. ”Come.”

======

The conference room on the ninth floor was the kind of room designed to make people feel the weight of decisions. Floor to ceiling windows looking out over the city. A long table with enough space between the two sides to feel deliberate. Water glasses already poured. The bound contract sitting precisely in the center of the label’s side of the table like something they’d already decided belonged to them.

Olivia was already seated when they came in, on their side of the table, her posture perfect, her hands folded in front of her. She glanced at Sean when he sat beside her and said nothing, which was its own kind of communication.

Across from them, two label representatives.

David Harlan, senior director. Mid-forties. The relaxed confidence of someone who had been in this specific chair so many times the chair had started to fit the shape of his certainty. He shook hands with the economy of someone for whom handshakes were a formality rather than an opening.

Beside him, contracts manager Rachel Fenn. Slightly younger. Tablet open. The focused attention of someone whose entire job was the language, which meant she was the more dangerous of the two because language was where everything actually lived.

”Shall we begin,” said Harlan.

He didn’t wait for an answer.

Fenn opened to the first section.

The walk-through started clean. Standard structure. Recording commitments, three albums over four years, release schedule with label approval on timing. Sean listened and said nothing. This was their ground, established and comfortable. He was letting them get comfortable.

Section four.

”Royalty split,” said Fenn. ”Eighteen percent net to artist on physical and digital sales. Industry standard for debut contracts at this tier.”

”Fourteen percent net is industry standard at this tier,” said Kwon. ”Eighteen percent is what you offer artists who come in with established streaming numbers. Olivia’s showcase data puts her above debut tier by any honest metric.”

Harlan smiled. The specific smile of someone who had expected this exact pushback and had already decided how much they were willing to move. ”Sixteen percent. That’s our best number on debut.”

”Twenty,” said Kwon.

The room shifted. Not dramatically. Just the specific shift of a room where both sides have just confirmed that neither is going to simply accept the first number offered.

Harlan looked at Kwon. ”Sixteen is generous, Mr. Kwon. You know that.”

”I know what the market is doing,” said Kwon. ”I’ve signed seven debut acts in the last four years. Sixteen was generous eighteen months ago. The streaming split has changed what net means in practice.”

”We’re not adjusting our net calculation methodology,” said Fenn, smoothly. ”That’s company-wide.”

”I’m not asking you to adjust the methodology,” said Kwon. ”I’m asking you to adjust the percentage to reflect what net actually returns to an artist under your current methodology.”

Harlan picked up his pen and wrote something. ”Seventeen five. Final on the royalty.”

”Eighteen,” said Kwon.

”Seventeen five,” said Harlan, with the tone of someone who had just communicated that the number was done.

Sean watched Harlan’s hand as he wrote. The pen pressure. The specific way he set it back down. Business Insight was reading the room the way it read every room, the small things that added up to a picture of exactly how much room existed in this particular negotiation.

He leaned slightly toward Kwon and said quietly, ”He has room on the streaming split specifically. Not the physical. The streaming.”

Kwon didn’t look at him. ”Section four point three,” said Kwon, to Fenn. ”The streaming split is calculated separately from physical under your current structure. Correct.”

Fenn glanced at her tablet. ”That’s correct.”

”Seventeen five on physical,” said Kwon. ”Twenty-two on streaming.”

The room went quiet.

Harlan looked at Fenn. The look lasted about two seconds, which was two seconds longer than it should have if the answer was no.

”Twenty on streaming,” said Harlan.

”Twenty-two,” said Kwon.

”Twenty-one,” said Harlan. ”And that’s a number I will need to justify upstairs.”

”Twenty-one on streaming,” said Kwon. ”Agreed.”

Fenn typed. The numbers changed. The first real concession of the morning, sitting now in the document, and the atmosphere in the room shifted in the specific way atmospheres shifted when both sides had just learned what kind of negotiation this was going to be.

The harder kind.

Section six. The recording timeline.

”We’d like creative approval on the production team for each album,” said Kwon.

”Creative input,” said Harlan. ”Not approval. Final production decisions remain with the label.”

”Creative approval with a dispute resolution mechanism,” said Kwon. ”Deadlock goes to a mutually agreed third party.”

”That’s not standard,” said Fenn.

”Olivia came to you from a showcase where every creative decision was hers,” said Sean. ”The production style, the formation choices, the staging. What you’re acquiring isn’t just a voice. It’s a specific creative vision. Giving final production authority to the label is acquiring the voice and leaving the vision on the table.”
