Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The VFX Blindspot Hack

The first week of December 1993 brought a deceptive, sun-drenched chill to Los Angeles. Christmas decorations were already glittering violently across the storefronts of Rodeo Drive, a desperate capitalist push to squeeze the last drops of liquidity from the holiday shopping season.

Elias van Kempen stepped out of the hushed, aggressively expensive air of L’Ermitage restaurant and onto the sun-baked sidewalk. Behind him, John Casablancas was likely still nursing a stroke, entirely unaware that he had just handed over the future highest-paid actress of the 2000s for the price of a lunch Elias hadn’t even paid for.

Paul Rudd was waiting by the curb, leaning against the hood of their rented black town car. He was nervously chewing on a thumbnail, his eyes darting up and down the street as if expecting the FBI to descend upon them at any moment.

”Elias,” Paul exhaled, practically vibrating with anxiety as his boss approached. ”Cindy Crawford just walked out looking like she won the lottery, and Casablancas’s lawyer looked like he was ready to jump off a bridge. Tell me you didn’t do something illegal. Please tell me we don’t need to flee to Mexico.”

”I did nothing but offer a mutually beneficial corporate synergy, Paul,” Elias said smoothly, adjusting the cuffs of his dark Armani suit. He slid into the backseat of the car. ”Get in. Call Owen. Tell him to rent the cheapest U-Haul pickup truck he can find and meet us at an industrial park in Burbank.”

Paul blinked, freezing with his hand on the door handle. ”A U-Haul? Why do we need a U-Haul? Did you buy another restaurant? Elias, we have six point four million dollars in a shadow account in Europe! Why are we renting a twenty-dollar truck?!”

”Because paying a professional moving company one hundred dollars is a gross misallocation of capital,” Elias stated flawlessly. ”And because Hollywood is currently blind, and we are going to steal its eyes. Drive.”

As the town car merged onto the heavily congested 405 Freeway, Elias pulled out a sleek, leather-bound notebook.

”Six months ago, Paul, a man named Steven Spielberg released a film about dinosaurs,” Elias began, his baritone voice cutting through the hum of the engine. ”It grossed nearly a billion dollars worldwide. But more importantly, it rendered practical effects obsolete.”

Paul checked his rearview mirror, frowning. ”Jurassic Park? Yeah, I saw it. The computer stuff was cool. So what?”

”So,” Elias leaned forward, his dark eyes gleaming with predatory intellect. ”The visual effects were done by Industrial Light & Magic. George Lucas’s company. Do you know how much ILM charges to render five minutes of computer-generated imagery on a screen?”

”A lot?”

”Millions,” Elias whispered. ”They hold an absolute monopoly on the highest-tier infrastructure of modern cinema. In ten years, every single blockbuster—from action films to fantasy epics—will require extensive CGI. He who owns the rendering algorithm, owns the toll booth to the Box Office.”

Paul gripped the steering wheel, a cold sweat breaking out on the back of his neck. ”Please don’t tell me you’re trying to buy ILM. George Lucas will laugh in your face and then crush us.”

”I am not a fool, Paul. Buying an established monopoly is wildly expensive,” Elias smirked, looking out the window at the passing smog. ”I prefer to buy the monopoly while it is still starving in a garage.”

Forty-five minutes later, the town car pulled into a bleak, sun-scorched industrial zoning park in Burbank. It was a graveyard of failed auto shops and cheap storage units. There were no palm trees here, only cracked asphalt and the relentless hum of high-voltage power lines.

Owen Wilson was already waiting, leaning casually against the rusting fender of a rented, battered Ford pickup truck. He was wearing a vintage flannel shirt and eating a bruised apple.

”Hey, guys,” Owen drawled lazily, tossing the apple core into a nearby dumpster. ”I got the truck. The guy at the rental place said the suspension is shot, but it was only nineteen bucks for the day. Very budget-conscious. Where’s the fire?”

”Follow me,” Elias ordered.

Elias led his two heavily traumatized, A-list-bound assistants toward Unit 14-B. The corrugated metal door was rolled halfway up. The heat radiating from inside the garage was oppressive. It smelled aggressively of stale pepperoni pizza, burnt ozone, and the distinct, sweaty odor of desperate men who hadn’t slept in three days.

Inside, the space was dominated by a tangled nest of thick black cables and three massive, refrigerator-sized Silicon Graphics (SGI) workstations. The cooling fans roared like jet engines. Three young men with terrible posture and unkempt hair were staring red-eyed at a bank of heavy, flickering CRT monitors.

They were independent software developers. In 1993, they were considered the lowest caste of the Hollywood ecosystem—nerds playing with expensive calculators.

Elias walked into the garage, his three-thousand-dollar suit standing out against the grime like a diamond in a landfill.

He didn’t announce himself. His eyes immediately locked onto a bright pink piece of paper taped to the wall above the main server. His photographic memory instantly captured the text.

FINAL NOTICE OF EVICTION. 72 HOURS TO VACATE. AMOUNT DUE: $4,850.00.

Elias smiled. Desperation was the greatest catalyst for a bargain.

He turned his attention to the central CRT monitor. Lines of complex, raw C++ code were scrolling rapidly down the black screen, rendering a rudimentary, grey-shaded 3D wireframe of a human face.

Elias mentally pressed the button.

[CHA-CHING!]

The world shifted. The grime of the garage faded. In Elias’s vision, the lines of code on the screen began to glow with a brilliant, blindingly bright green light.

The lead programmer, a guy in a faded comic book t-shirt and thick glasses, finally noticed the three men standing in his garage. He blinked, looking at Elias’s suit, then at Paul and Owen.

”Uh... can I help you?” the programmer asked, his voice defensive. ”If you’re from the property manager, we just need a few more days. We’re close to a breakthrough on the ray-tracing sub-routine. We just need to pitch it to Warner Bros next week—”

”Warner Bros will not let you past the front gate,” Elias cut in, his voice a smooth, cold blade that instantly severed the man’s naive optimism. ”They do not buy raw code from starving men in garages. They buy polished software from established corporations. And according to the pink slip on your wall, you do not have a week. You have seventy-two hours before your servers are thrown onto the sidewalk.”

The three programmers froze. The reality of their poverty crashed down on them.

”Who the hell are you?” another programmer asked, standing up.

”I am the only man in Los Angeles willing to fund your electricity bill,” Elias said elegantly. He walked over to a greasy pizza box sitting on a folding table.

With absolute, deliberate showmanship, Elias reached into the inner breast pocket of his Armani jacket. He pulled out a thick, crisp stack of one-hundred-dollar bills. He dropped it onto the pizza box with a heavy, wet thud.

The sound of physical cash hitting cardboard was the most hypnotic sound in the universe. The three programmers stared at the stack of money, their pupils dilating.

”Five thousand dollars,” Elias dictated, his tone utterly devoid of emotion. ”It covers your eviction notice and buys you a decent meal.”

The lead programmer swallowed hard, his eyes glued to the cash. ”What... what’s the catch? You want a percentage of our company?”

Elias laughed. It was a dark, aristocratic sound that made Paul Rudd shiver.

”You do not have a company,” Elias corrected seamlessly. ”You have a debt and a fire hazard. I am not offering an investment. I am executing a buyout.”

Elias snapped his fingers. Paul, trained by sheer terror, immediately pulled a sleek leather folder from under his arm, extracting a pre-written corporate contract. Elias placed it next to the money.

”This is an Umbrella Licensing and Asset Transfer Agreement,” Elias explained, engaging the Win-Win Parasite tactic. ”You take the five thousand dollars today. In exchange, Sovereign Media assumes one hundred percent exclusive patent ownership of your rendering algorithm, the source code, and all derivative intellectual property.”

The programmers bristled. ”100% of the patents? Are you crazy? We spent two years writing that code!”

”And you have zero dollars to show for it,” Elias countered, a brutal, undeniable fact. ”But I am not a tyrant. I need you to finish the code. So, Sovereign Media is founding a new subsidiary today. Sovereign Digital. I will hold eighty percent of the equity. You three will split the remaining twenty percent, and you will be salaried employees.”

The lead programmer scoffed, trying to mask his desperation with technological arrogance. ”Twenty percent? For our own work? Dude, you’re just some rich model in a suit. You don’t even know what this code does. It’s a dynamic light-scattering engine. It’s going to change computer graphics.”

”I am well aware of what it does,” Elias lied with sociopathic perfection. ”I am also aware that without my money, your code will be deleted by a landlord who wants to rent this garage to a mechanic. Take the five thousand dollars. Take the twenty percent equity in a fully funded corporate entity. Or keep your pride, and code on the streets.”

The garage was silent, save for the roar of the cooling fans.

The programmers looked at each other. They looked at the crisp, physical stack of five thousand dollars. In 1993, to a group of broke software nerds, five grand in cash felt like a lottery win. They looked at Elias, a ridiculously handsome, intimidating teenager who clearly had more money than sense.

In their minds, the Historical Blindspot took over. They truly believed Elias was an ignorant, rich playboy throwing away cash on ”computer stuff” he didn’t understand. They thought they were scamming him. If the company failed, they still walked away with five grand free and clear.

”You’re a fool, pretty boy,” the lead programmer muttered, grabbing the pen with greedy, trembling hands. He signed the document, and his two partners immediately followed suit.

They snatched the stack of cash off the pizza box, grinning at each other like they had just pulled off the heist of the century.

Elias van Kempen smiled behind his sunglasses. He didn’t bother correcting them. He had just purchased the foundational DNA of the multi-billion-dollar Hollywood VFX industry for the price of a used Honda Civic.

”A wise decision,” Elias murmured, folding the contract and sliding it into his breast pocket. He turned to Paul and Owen.

”Paul. Owen,” Elias ordered, his voice shifting into the clinical tone of a merciless foreman. ”The hardware now belongs to Sovereign Digital. The lease on this garage is terminated. Load the servers and the monitors into the pickup truck. We are moving them to our offices.”

Paul’s eyes went wide. He looked at the massive, bulky CRT monitors, each one the size of a microwave and weighing roughly thirty kilograms. Then he looked at the refrigerator-sized SGI towers.

”Wait, what?” Paul panicked. ”Us? Elias, I’m wearing a Prada shirt! Owen is an actor! We can’t carry this stuff! Let me call a moving company! It’ll cost like, a hundred bucks!”

”A hundred dollars is liquid capital that can be deployed into the stock market to generate compound interest,” Elias replied, a sickeningly polite smile on his face. ”Your physical labor, however, is currently on a fixed monthly retainer. Therefore, your labor is free. Lift with your knees, Paul.”

”This is abuse!” Paul whimpered, walking over to one of the massive CRT monitors. He grabbed the sides, straining his face as he tried to lift it. ”Oh god, my spine! Owen, help me!”

Owen sighed, tossing his hair back and walking over to grab the other side of the monitor. ”You gotta channel your chi, Paul. Focus the energy in your core. Though, I gotta admit, Elias, this is a very aggressive interpretation of our job descriptions. We are artists, man. Not beasts of burden.”

”Consider it method acting for your next role as a blue-collar worker, Owen,” Elias offered generously.

For the next two hours, the blistering Burbank sun beat down on the asphalt as Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson groaned, sweated, and physically suffered. They carried hundreds of pounds of primitive 90s technology out of the garage and haphazardly loaded it into the bed of the beat-up Ford pickup truck.

Paul’s expensive shirt was covered in dust and grease. Owen was panting, his laid-back demeanor entirely shattered by the brutal physical exertion.

Elias stood in the shade of an awning, holding a cup of iced coffee he had coerced one of the nerds into buying for him. He watched his two A-list Hollywood mascots load the servers, completely unbothered by their suffering.

”Careful with that SGI tower, Paul,” Elias called out casually, taking a sip of his coffee. ”If you drop it, the system will deduct the replacement cost directly from your future acting royalties.”

”I hate you!” Paul screamed, his face bright red as he and Owen shoved the heavy metal tower into the truck bed. ”I am calling my agent! I am calling the labor board! You are a monster!”

Elias simply smiled. The physical exertion of his friends was a small, entertaining price to pay for absolute corporate dominance. He had just secured the digital future of cinema.

Deep within his mind, the capitalist interface flared to life, confirming the hostile takeover.

Elias felt the CP settle into his ledger. He adjusted his Armani jacket, walking toward the town car.

”Excellent work, gentlemen,” Elias praised them, completely ignoring their exhausted, murderous glares. ”Now, drive the truck back to the studio. Do not take the highway, the suspension might damage my new assets. I will see you at the office.”

Elias got into the back of his air-conditioned town car, leaving Paul and Owen standing in the hot Burbank sun, covered in dust and defeat, bound to the undeniable gravity of a true capitalist dictator.
