Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Cyberpunk Syndication Hack

The fourth week of October 1993 brought a crisp, aggressive chill to the Los Angeles air, but inside the executive office of Sovereign Media, the temperature was actively hostile.

A heavy, leather-bound script flew across the room, striking the edge of Elias van Kempen’s modular steel desk with a violent THWACK. The pages spilled out onto the floor.

Angelina Jolie stood in the center of the office. She was eighteen, radiating pure, untamed rebellion, dressed in heavily distressed denim and a black tank top that showcased the sharp, furious lines of her posture. She looked like a Molotov cocktail waiting for a match.

”I am never, ever doing a movie with a robotic arm again,” Angelina hissed, pacing like a caged panther. ”Do you hear me, Elias? Cyborg 2 was a humiliating, degrading piece of cinematic trash. The dialogue sounded like it was written by a toddler with a head injury. You burned my sequel contract, which I am grateful for. But if you think I left that garbage fire just to sit in your office and read basic, boring teen-drama scripts, you are out of your mind.”

Elias van Kempen remained perfectly reclined in his high-backed leather chair, steepled fingers resting beneath his chin. He did not reprimand her. He did not tell her to calm down. He merely watched her with the absolute, suffocating gravity of a Devoted Boss who found her fury deeply entertaining.

”You are experiencing the psychological hangover of creative prostitution, Angelina,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a smooth, cold vibration that instantly commanded the room. ”You compromised your artistic integrity for a paycheck, and the resulting product offended your soul. It is a necessary trauma. Now you know exactly what you are running from.”

Angelina stopped pacing, her dark, intense eyes locking onto his. ”And what exactly am I running toward, Elias? Because right now, I don’t see a masterpiece on your desk.”

”I am not interested in masterpieces. Masterpieces are subjective,” Elias smiled, a dark, utterly shameless expression. ”I am interested in manifesting the future. And you are going to be its face.”

Before Angelina could question him, the door to the office was kicked open.

Paul Rudd staggered into the room, his face a terrifying shade of purple. He was walking backward, groaning in pure, unadulterated agony as he hauled one side of a massive, impossibly heavy, beige 1990s CRT desktop computer monitor.

On the other side of the monitor, Owen Wilson was sweating profusely, his normally relaxed face contorted into a grimace of physical suffering.

”Elias,” Paul wheezed, his knees buckling slightly. ”My L4 vertebra is turning to dust. Is this thing filled with lead? Why does a television need to weigh eighty pounds?!”

”Do not drop the monitor, Paul,” Elias instructed, standing up and adjusting the cuffs of his pristine white shirt. ”Place it on the secondary glass desk. Then go back to the van and retrieve the other four.”

Owen gently set his side down, gasping for air. ”Man, this is brutal. And none of these have power cords. They’re literally hollow shells we bought from a liquidator in the Valley. Why are we building a fake computer lab?”

”It is not a fake computer lab, Owen. It is a psychological theater,” Elias explained, walking over and adjusting the angle of the dead, heavy monitor.

Deep in his cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark registered the logistical expenses.

”In precisely ten minutes,” Elias continued, ignoring the drain on his liquid cash, ”a screenwriter named Rafael Moreu is going to walk through those doors. He has written a script about a culture that does not fully exist yet. The major studios have rejected it because they believe ’the internet’ is a boring, unprofitable fad for nerds.”

Angelina crossed her arms, raising a skeptical eyebrow. ”So you’re making me do a movie about nerds typing on keyboards? Elias, that sounds like box office poison.”

”If a nerd types on a keyboard and steals fifty dollars, he is a nuisance,” Elias corrected, his eyes gleaming with cold, sociopathic foresight. ”If a nerd types on a keyboard and crashes the global financial market, he is a god. Rafael’s script is called Hackers. It is the first cyberpunk manifestation of the digital rebellion. It is edgy, it is dangerous, and it is entirely misunderstood by the old guard.”

Elias turned to Paul, who was rubbing his lower back and whimpering.

”Rafael is cynical. He expects to meet another bloated, out-of-touch Hollywood producer,” Elias dictated. ”When he walks in, I need him to see a chaotic, heavily funded Silicon Valley tech startup. I need him to believe we speak his language. Now, fetch the rest of the monitors.”

Ten minutes later, the Sovereign Media office had been transformed. Heavy, grey CRT monitors sat on every available surface. Thick, useless cables were artfully tangled across the floor.

The door opened, and Rafael Moreu stepped inside.

He looked exactly like a man who had spent the last two years being rejected by billionaires. He wore a faded flannel shirt, wire-rimmed glasses, and carried a battered leather messenger bag. He looked around the room, his eyes widening slightly at the sheer volume of computing hardware.

”Rafael,” Elias greeted, stepping around the desk. He didn’t offer a corporate handshake. He offered a nod of silent, recognizing respect. ”I am Elias van Kempen. This is Angelina Jolie.”

Rafael blinked, looking at the impossibly handsome teenager, then at the striking, fiercely intense woman leaning against the wall. ”You’re... you’re the guys who want to option Hackers? I thought Sovereign Media was a record label.”

”We are a multimedia disruption firm,” Elias lied flawlessly. ”Have a seat.”

Rafael sat down, placing his heavy leather bag on the floor. As the bag shifted, the flap fell open slightly.

Elias didn’t miss a beat. He mentally triggered the loan shark, needing absolute leverage.

[CHA-CHING!]

A glowing red grid snapped over Rafael’s bag. Elias’s eyes effortlessly pierced the leather, scanning the documents stuffed inside. Past the script drafts and the 2600 magazines, a specific piece of paper illuminated in bright, warning yellow.

[SCAN COMPLETE. THREAT ANALYSIS: PERSONAL FINANCIAL DISTRESS.] [VULNERABILITY: TARGET POSSESSES A DELINQUENT CHASE MANHATTAN CREDIT CARD STATEMENT. BALANCE: $5,024.12. Elias deactivated the scan, his expression shifting into a mask of benevolent, predatory grace.

”Let me save us both an hour of meaningless Hollywood posturing, Rafael,” Elias began, sitting on the edge of his desk. ”The studios don’t understand your script. They think hacking is just fast typing. They don’t understand that you are writing about the transfer of power. You are writing about a world where data is a weapon.”

Rafael’s cynical exterior cracked. He leaned forward, genuinely shocked. ”You... you actually read it. You get it. Everyone else told me to add more gunfights!”

”Gunfights are archaic,” Angelina interjected smoothly, picking up on Elias’s rhythm, her rebellious aura perfectly matching the room’s engineered vibe. ”If you can shut down a city’s power grid from a laptop, a gun is just a loud accessory.”

Rafael looked at her, his eyes lighting up. He was looking at Acid Burn in the flesh.

”I want to produce this film, Rafael,” Elias stated. ”And I am willing to offer you a contract that no major studio will ever draft.”

Elias reached into his jacket. He didn’t pull out a script. He pulled out a thick, banded stack of one-hundred-dollar bills. He dropped the five thousand dollars in raw, physical cash directly onto the table in front of Rafael.

Rafael stared at the money, his throat bobbing.

”That is a five-thousand-dollar Option Fee to secure the rights today,” Elias said, executing the Win-Win Parasite with devastating efficiency. ”Furthermore, my contract guarantees you a two percent Backend Gross of the box office. And you will maintain one hundred percent creative control. No studio executives will rewrite your dialogue. No one will add unnecessary explosions.”

Rafael was hyperventilating. It was the holy grail of screenwriting contracts. ”What’s the catch? There’s always a catch.”

”Two conditions,” Elias raised two fingers. ”First, Angelina Jolie plays the lead female role, Acid Burn. Non-negotiable.”

Rafael looked at Angelina, who offered him a sharp, highly intimidating smirk. ”I can live with that,” Rafael breathed. ”She’s perfect. What’s the second?”

”The second,” Elias said, his voice dropping into a casual, dismissive tone, as if it were a complete afterthought, ”is a minor merchandising technicality. In the script, your hackers use highly stylized, three-dimensional graphic interfaces to navigate the Gibson supercomputer. I want Sovereign Media to hold one hundred percent of the copyright and design patents for all the fake computer screens, UI graphics, and software aesthetics generated for the film.”

Rafael blinked. He stared at Elias.

Then, very slowly, Rafael had to bite the inside of his cheek to stop himself from laughing out loud.

Rafael Moreu was a smart man, but he was a man of 1993. To him, the ”UI Design” in a movie was just fake, glowing geometry drawn by animators to make the film look cool. It wasn’t real software. It had zero real-world utility.

This rich, pretty-boy producer is giving me two percent of the gross and full creative control... just so he can own the copyright to fake cartoon computer screens? Rafael thought, a massive, comical sweatdrop of sheer relief forming on his forehead. He’s a complete idiot! He thinks he’s buying tech, but he’s buying digital finger-painting!

”Deal,” Rafael blurted out, snatching the pen from the desk before Elias could change his mind.

He violently scrawled his signature across the Hollywood Option Agreement, grabbed the stack of cash, and shoved it into his bag. He was terrified the ’foolish’ producer would realize his mistake.

”I’ll have my agent send the final riders on Monday,” Rafael said, practically sprinting for the door. ”Pleasure doing business with you, Elias!”

The door clicked shut.

Paul Rudd peaked his head out from behind a massive CRT monitor, wiping sweat from his brow. ”Elias, I don’t get it. You just gave him a legendary backend deal for the rights to... fake computer graphics?”

Angelina walked over to the desk, her arms crossed, her eyes narrowed. She had watched the entire negotiation. She knew Elias van Kempen did not give away percentages for free.

”You scammed him, didn’t you?” Angelina asked softly, a wicked, admiring smile playing on her lips. ”He thought he was ripping you off. But you got exactly what you wanted. Why do you want the fake screen designs?”

Elias van Kempen stood up. He walked over to one of the dead, heavy CRT monitors. He rested his hand on the grey plastic casing.

”In five years, Angelina, every household in America will have a computer,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice echoing with the terrifying, absolute certainty of a man who remembered the future. ”In ten years, every corporation on Earth will rely on digital infrastructure. And when those real tech companies—when the billionaires in Silicon Valley—attempt to design 3D file management systems, virtual reality interfaces, or graphical data navigators...”

Elias turned to look at her, his eyes cold, bottomless pits of pure capitalist monopoly.

”...they will discover that Sovereign Media owns the foundational visual patents for all of it. Because we copyrighted the aesthetic in a movie before the technology even existed.”

Angelina Jolie stopped breathing. The sheer, sociopathic scale of the long con hit her like a physical blow. He hadn’t just bought a movie script. He had just laid a legal landmine across the entire future of the tech industry, and he had bought it for five thousand dollars and a meaningless percentage of a movie.

A slow, vicious smirk spread across Angelina’s face. The lingering trauma of Cyborg 2 evaporated, replaced by a profound, intoxicating loyalty to the monster standing in front of her.

”You are a terrifying human being, Elias,” she whispered, stepping closer to him.

”I am a man who reads the contract, Angelina,” Elias corrected politely. ”Now. Let’s go make you a cyberpunk icon.”

Deep within his mind, the system erupted in a rapturous, deafening applause.

Elias felt his CP balance rise to a healthy 375 points. The digital frontier was secured. Now, he just had to find a way to monetize the physical reality.
