Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

November 6, 1993.

The casino floor of Caesars Palace was a glittering, suffocating ocean of cigarette smoke, cheap perfume, and desperate greed. The air vibrated with the manic energy of a city preparing to host the single biggest sporting event of the year: the heavyweight championship rematch between Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe.

Deep inside the high-limit sports betting lounge, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of old money and cheap cigars.

Elias van Kempen stood at the primary teller window. He unzipped a heavy canvas duffel bag and seamlessly dumped thirty-eight banded stacks of one-hundred-dollar bills onto the velvet counter.

Paul Rudd, standing inches behind him, let out a high-pitched, tragic squeak, his eyes rolling back slightly as his knees buckled.

Three hundred and eighty thousand dollars in raw, physical cash. It was virtually the entire liquid operating capital of Sovereign Media.

“Elias,” Paul wheezed, grabbing the back of Elias’s vintage leather jacket. “We have eight thousand dollars left in the corporate account. If we lose this, we don’t have enough money to buy gas for the RV. We will be living in the desert. We will have to eat cacti.”

“Poverty is an excellent motivator, Paul,” Elias murmured smoothly, his striking, aristocratic features completely unbothered by the sheer financial lunacy he was committing.

Behind the counter, Vinnie, a thickly built sportsbook manager with a broken nose and a silk tie, stared at the mountain of cash. He looked up at the teenager.

“Three hundred and eighty dimes. Cash,” Vinnie grunted, raising a skeptical eyebrow. “You putting this on Holyfield or Bowe, kid?”

“Neither,” Elias replied, his baritone voice a dark, perfectly calibrated instrument of capitalist manipulation. “I am requesting a highly specific proposition wager. A Prop Bet.”

Vinnie snorted. “We take action on anything. You want to bet on what round Bowe goes down? How many times Holyfield spits his mouthguard? Name it.”

Elias leaned forward, resting his hands flat on the velvet counter. He looked directly into Vinnie’s eyes, projecting the cold, deadpan certainty of a man who remembered the future.

“I am wagering three hundred and eighty thousand dollars,” Elias dictated, every syllable laced with absolute, chilling precision, “that the main event will be officially suspended in the seventh round due to an external security breach. Specifically, an aerial intrusion originating from outside the arena.”

Vinnie froze. He stared at Elias. Then, a loud, booming laugh erupted from his chest, echoing across the betting lounge.

“An aerial intrusion?” Vinnie wiped a tear from his eye. “What, you think a UFO is gonna land in the ring? You think Superman is gonna crash the fight? Kid, this is Caesars Palace. Our airspace is locked tighter than Fort Knox.”

“Then you should have no problem giving me excellent odds,” Elias smiled, a breathtakingly shameless expression.

Vinnie grinned, a predator looking at a very rich, very stupid lamb. “I’ll give you a thousand to one, kid. You’re throwing your money into an incinerator.”

“Print the ticket, Vinnie.”

A minute later, Elias slipped the printed slip of thermal paper into the inner pocket of his jacket. The math was simple. At 1,000:1 odds, his $380,000 wager was now a $380,000,000 liability for the casino.

[SYSTEM WARNING: DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DEDUCTION INITIATED.] [DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

His liquid cash was officially $8,150.00. He was practically destitute.

“Come along, Paul,” Elias commanded, turning toward the arena doors. “It is time to go to work.”

High above the pristine, canvas-covered boxing ring, the temporary outdoor stadium was a sea of fifteen thousand screaming fans. But in Section 402, Row Z—the absolute highest, cheapest ‘nosebleed’ seats in the entire arena—a localized civil war was brewing.

Charlize Theron, Cindy Crawford, and Angelina Jolie were crammed onto a narrow aluminum bench. They were surrounded by shirtless, severely intoxicated college students holding plastic cups of cheap beer.

“I am going to murder Paul,” Angelina hissed, aggressively elbowing a drunk tourist who stumbled too close to her combat boots. “He told me the VIP section was sold out! I saw Jack Nicholson sitting ringside!”

“This is unacceptable,” Cindy Crawford muttered, wrapping a silk scarf tightly around her neck to avoid touching the sticky aluminum bench. “We are the global face of a multi-million dollar merchandise line, and Elias has us sitting in the stratosphere.”

“It’s a power play,” Charlize sighed, though a dark, amused smirk played on her lips. She understood the sociopath better than anyone. “He is reminding us that he controls the capital. And he is far too cheap to spend six thousand dollars on ringside seats.”

Suddenly, the massive banks of halogen stadium lights snapped off.

The entire arena plunged into pitch black. A collective, confused murmur rippled through the fifteen thousand spectators.

Then, the floorboards of the stadium actually shook.

A heavy, distorted, impossibly thick bassline erupted from the state-of-the-art PA system.

BUM… BUM-BUM-BUM-BUM… BUM… BUM…

It wasn’t just loud; it was visceral. It was a sonic virus. The heavy, marching rhythm of “Seven Nation Army” bypassed the auditory cortex and struck directly at the central nervous system.

Without realizing what they were doing, fifteen thousand people began to stomp their feet against the aluminum bleachers in perfect synchronization with the bass. The sound was deafening, a tribal, unified heartbeat that made the stadium tremble.

A single, brilliant white spotlight snapped on, illuminating the entrance tunnel.

Elias van Kempen walked out into the light.

He was stripped to the waist, wearing only black boxing trunks. His 189-centimeter frame was a flawless, terrifying testament to the V-Taper Body Sculpting he had leased from the system. His muscles were lean, defined, and coiled with the cold, mechanical tension of an apex predator.

He didn’t dance. He didn’t wave to the crowd. He walked toward the ring with a deadpan, apathetic, suffocating aura of absolute violence.

Up in the nosebleed section, the anger instantly evaporated. Charlize, Cindy, and Angelina went entirely silent. They stared down at the spotlight, an involuntary, collective flush of heat rising to their cheeks as they watched their ruthlessly cheap boss radiate an overwhelming, god-tier wave of raw masculinity.

Elias stepped through the ropes.

In the opposite corner stood ‘Iron’ Bobby, a heavily muscled local heavyweight prospect who had spent the last two weeks mocking Elias’s modeling career in the local press. Bobby pounded his gloves together, sneering through his mouthpiece.

The referee brought them to the center of the ring.

“No low blows. Protect yourself at all times,” the referee barked.

Elias mentally engaged the loan shark. He wasn’t here to box. He was here to execute a corporate liquidation of a human being.

[CHA-CHING!]

The bell rang.

Bobby surged forward instantly, abandoning all technique in a furious rush, throwing a massive, looping right overhand aimed directly at Elias’s jaw. He wanted a highlight-reel knockout against the pretty boy.

Elias’s perception of time dilated. To his system-enhanced reflexes, Bobby was moving through wet cement.

Elias didn’t retreat. He simply slipped his head three inches to the left. The leather glove rushed past his ear, missing entirely.

Elias stepped inside Bobby’s guard, his chest brushing against the heavier man’s torso. He seamlessly transitioned into a tight clinch, wrapping his arms around Bobby’s back.

“Your punches are slower than the rate of inflation, friend,” Elias whispered directly into Bobby’s ear, the savage, street-smart trash talk delivered with chilling, aristocratic boredom.

Before the referee could step in to break the clinch, Elias pivoted his hips, creating a singular, terrifying inch of separation.

He uncoiled his left arm in a perfectly calculated, upward hook.

The blow bypassed Bobby’s ribcage entirely, burying itself with sickening, mechanical force directly into the soft tissue over Bobby’s liver.

The sound of the impact echoed through the ringside microphones—a wet, heavy CRACK that made the commentators wince.

The human liver is the body’s largest internal organ. When struck with extreme precision, the resulting shockwave paralyzes the diaphragm, instantly suffocating the brain of oxygen and triggering a catastrophic shutdown of the nervous system.

Bobby’s eyes rolled back into his head. The sneer vanished. His massive legs simply stopped working.

He collapsed straight down, hitting the canvas like a felled redwood, completely paralyzed, gasping desperately for air that his body refused to process.

The referee didn’t even bother counting to ten. He immediately waved his arms, diving over Bobby to signal for the ringside physician.

Total elapsed time: Forty seconds.

Elias van Kempen did not raise his arms in celebration. He did not smile. He simply turned around, his chest barely heaving, and walked back to his corner to retrieve his vintage leather jacket. The crowd was in a state of absolute, stunned delirium.

He had just utilized a global Pay-Per-View broadcast to hijack millions of minds with his unreleased soundtrack, and he had paid for it by legally extorting the stadium’s electrical grid.

Two hours later. Round 7 of Evander Holyfield versus Riddick Bowe.

Elias sat comfortably in a plush VIP ringside seat—a final, shameless perk extracted from Marty, the terrified network executive. He had showered, dressed in his tailored suit, and was currently checking his Rolex.

Suddenly, a strange, buzzing sound cut through the roar of the crowd. It sounded like an oversized lawnmower.

The spectators looked up.

Dropping out of the freezing night sky, suspended beneath a motorized parachute, was James Miller. The ‘Fan Man’.

He plummeted toward the bright lights of the ring, his parachute tangling in the overhead truss—the very truss Elias had threatened to repossess—before crashing violently into the ropes near Bowe’s corner.

The arena erupted into absolute, unmitigated pandemonium. Security guards flooded the ring. Spectators screamed. The fighters were pushed to their corners. The referee threw his arms up, officially suspending the bout due to a catastrophic external security breach.

Elias van Kempen smiled. He stood up, adjusted his cuffs, and began a slow, leisurely walk back toward the casino floor.

When Elias pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of the Caesars Palace high-limit sportsbook, he was not greeted with applause.

He was greeted by four armed casino security guards, two LAPD officers, and Vinnie the bookie, who was currently the color of wet chalk.

“Grab him!” Vinnie shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at Elias. “Arrest him! He sabotaged the fight! There’s no way he guessed that! He paid that lunatic with the parachute to crash the ring so he could scam the casino out of three hundred and eighty million dollars! It’s match-fixing! It’s wire fraud!”

The LAPD officers stepped forward, pulling their handcuffs. “Mr. van Kempen. You’re under arrest on suspicion of conspiracy to commit—”

“I suggest you pause, Officer,” Elias interrupted, slipping effortlessly into Mode CEO Mafia. The sheer, suffocating authority in his voice made the cops freeze.

Elias reached into the inner breast pocket of his suit. He did not pull out a weapon. He pulled out a crisp, neatly folded document and handed it directly to the grey-haired man standing silently behind Vinnie—the Chief Legal Counsel for Caesars Palace.

“I am not a conspirator,” Elias stated, projecting the chilling, deadpan logic of a corporate shark. “I am a victim of your client’s gross, systemic negligence.”

The lawyer unfolded the document. His eyes widened in absolute horror.

It was a formal, registered facsimile sent directly to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), with a carbon copy stamped as Received by the Caesars Palace Department of Security.

The date on the stamp was November 4th. Forty-eight hours ago.

“As you can see,” Elias dictated, every word a nail in the casino’s coffin, “the private intelligence division of Sovereign Media detected chatter regarding a potential amateur aviation breach of your airspace. We formally advised your security department to implement an emergency No-Fly Zone over the outdoor arena. You ignored my intelligence. You failed to secure the perimeter.”

Vinnie stared at the letter. The LAPD officers took a slow, highly cautious step backward.

Elias leaned in, the Legal Chokehold snapping shut with the finality of a steel trap.

“If you attempt to arrest me,” Elias whispered, his dark eyes locking onto the trembling lawyer, “this document goes to the Los Angeles Times, the Nevada Gaming Commission, and the legal teams of the thirty thousand people sitting in that stadium. You will face a class-action lawsuit for reckless endangerment and gross negligence that will cost this casino billions.”

The lawyer was hyperventilating. The kid was right. They had a documented warning, and they had ignored it. If this went to court, Caesars Palace would be crucified.

“What… what do you want?” the lawyer choked out, wiping sweat from his brow. “We don’t have three hundred and eighty million dollars in liquid cash to pay out that ticket. It would trigger a corporate restructuring.”

“I am aware,” Elias smiled. It was the smile of a predator who had fully cornered his prey. “I am a reasonable man. I have no desire to bankrupt a historical institution.”

Elias pulled the betting ticket from his pocket. He held it up.

“I am offering you a Win-Win scenario,” Elias proposed, the extortion dripping with elegant rationality. “I will voluntarily liquidate this ticket. I will sign an ironclad Non-Disclosure Agreement regarding your security failure. The document never sees the light of day.”

The lawyer exhaled a shaky breath. “In exchange for what?”

“An out-of-court settlement for the emotional distress your negligence caused me tonight,” Elias murmured. “Fifteen million dollars. Cash, wired to the Sovereign Media corporate account by midnight. And complimentary VIP Platinum status at this establishment in perpetuity.”

Vinnie let out a strangled gasp, swaying on his feet. Fifteen million dollars. It was a staggering, astronomical sum. But compared to a $380 million payout and a federal negligence lawsuit… it was a profound mercy.

The lawyer looked at the ticket. He looked at Elias. He realized, with a deep, chilling clarity, that this teenager had never cared about the boxing match. He had audited a security flaw, planted a legal alibi, and trapped a multi-billion-dollar casino into handing over venture capital funding.

“I’ll have the wire transfer authorized immediately,” the lawyer whispered in defeat.

Elias slowly, methodically ripped the $380 million betting ticket into tiny pieces, letting them flutter to the plush carpet of the casino floor.

“A pleasure doing business with you, gentlemen,” Elias nodded politely.

He turned and walked out of the sportsbook. He had arrived in Las Vegas with eight thousand dollars. He was leaving with a stadium anthem, a visceral knockout, and fifteen million dollars in untraceable, perfectly legal settlement cash. Phase III was officially funded.

Deep within his mind, the system roared.
