Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Merchandise Arbitrage

The third week of October 1993 brought a dry, aggressive Santa Ana wind that rattled the acoustic-glass windows of the Sovereign Media headquarters on Sunset Boulevard. Inside the executive office, the climate control hummed with pristine efficiency, but the psychological atmosphere was a raging, apocalyptic inferno.

Paul Rudd was currently curled into a tight ball on the vintage leather sofa, clutching a thick stack of faxes to his chest like a man trying to shield himself from shrapnel.

”The presses have stopped, Elias,” Paul whispered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, tragic squeal. ”The machines are literally silent. I just got off the phone with Gary at Sovereign Manufacturing. We are completely out of polycarbonate resin. We cannot press a single compact disc.”

Elias van Kempen sat perfectly still behind his modular steel desk. He wore his faded, unbranded vintage leather jacket, his dark eyes locked onto a small, muted television monitor in the corner of the room. On the screen, the MTV broadcast of the ”Bitter Sweet Symphony” guerrilla music video was playing for the fourth time that morning.

”Supply chains fluctuate, Paul,” Elias murmured smoothly, entirely devoid of panic.

”This isn’t a fluctuation! It’s a blockade!” Paul shrieked, sitting up and waving the faxes frantically. ”Tommy Mottola did it! Sony Music just executed a massive, statewide futures contract on raw polycarbonate! They bought out every single industrial plastics vendor from San Diego to San Francisco! They didn’t just outbid us; they hoarded the raw material so we couldn’t physically manufacture our product! MTV is playing our video ten times a day, kids are lined up outside Tower Records, and we have absolutely zero CDs to sell them! We are choking to death on our own hype!”

Owen Wilson ambled into the office, holding a mug of green tea. He looked at Paul’s flushed face and sighed softly. ”The corporate karma of the music industry is incredibly toxic, man. Tommy Mottola is basically building a dam across our financial river. It’s very un-chill.”

”It is not un-chill, Owen. It is a highly effective, classic monopolistic chokehold,” Elias corrected, his baritone voice a dark, velvety rumble.

He didn’t look angry. If anything, Elias looked profoundly, dangerously entertained. Tommy Mottola believed that by cutting off the physical plastic, he could silence the Sonic Virus. The CEO of Sony Music was operating under the archaic assumption that the only way to monetize a song was to sell a circular piece of plastic.

Elias looked back at the television monitor. The camera was zoomed in on his own face as he walked down Hollywood Boulevard, his shoulder violently checking a pedestrian. But Elias wasn’t looking at his face. He was looking at the jacket.

The beautifully distressed, perfectly cut vintage leather jacket that draped over his frame like armor.

”Teenagers do not watch MTV to listen to music, Paul,” Elias stated, slowly standing up. ”They watch MTV to learn how to exist. They are not buying a song. They are trying to buy an aesthetic.”

Paul stopped hyperventilating, blinking in confusion. ”An aesthetic? Elias, what are you talking about? We are a record label! We need to sell records!”

”We are a multimedia conglomerate, Paul,” Elias smiled, a cold, utterly shameless expression of pure capitalist adaptability. ”If Tommy Mottola has blockaded the music industry, we will simply extract our revenue from the garment district. Grab the keys to the Civic. We are going to pivot.”

Forty-five minutes later, the rusted, asthmatic 1984 Honda Civic pulled into the massive, sun-baked loading dock of Apex Garment Manufacturing in downtown Los Angeles.

It was a sprawling, industrial behemoth that supplied mid-tier leather goods and outerwear to hundreds of department stores across the country. It was loud, chaotic, and smelled heavily of tanned hides and chemical dyes.

Elias stepped out of the boiling cabin of the Civic, completely immune to the heat. He didn’t wait for Paul. He walked straight through the administrative double doors, projecting an aura of heavy, aristocratic entitlement that immediately parted the sea of scurrying assistants.

He bypassed the reception desk and pushed his way directly into the glass-walled office of the CEO.

Sitting behind a cluttered desk, barking orders into a telephone, was Arthur. He was a heavily built man in his fifties, wearing a rolled-up dress shirt and a tie stained with coffee. Arthur was an old-school garment manufacturer—a man who cared about volume, margins, and absolutely nothing else.

Arthur slammed the phone down and glared at the teenager who had just invaded his sanctuary.

”Who the hell are you?” Arthur grunted, looking Elias up and down. He took in the scuffed boots and the faded vintage jacket. ”If you’re looking for the warehouse casting call, it’s out back. We don’t hire walk-ins for the catalog.”

Elias did not flinch. He did not introduce himself like a subordinate. He pulled out a printed, highly classified Nielsen ratings report for MTV’s afternoon broadcast block and dropped it squarely onto Arthur’s desk.

”I am not looking for employment, Arthur. I am looking for infrastructure,” Elias purred, his voice instantly dominating the acoustic space of the office.

Arthur frowned, looking down at the chart. The viewership numbers were astronomical, spiking vertically during a specific three-minute window.

”What is this?” Arthur demanded.

Elias reached into his mind, activating the digital loan shark to ensure his negotiation bypassed the man’s ego and struck directly at his greed.

[CHA-CHING!]

The hypnotic frequency coated Elias’s vocal cords. He leaned his knuckles on the desk, looking down at the CEO.

”That is a metric of unmonetized obsession,” Elias dictated flawlessly. ”I am Elias van Kempen. The Managing Partner of Sovereign Media. For the past week, my music video has been the most heavily rotated visual asset on national television. Millions of teenagers are watching me wear this exact leather jacket. They are desperate to purchase it, but it is an unbranded vintage piece. It exists nowhere in the retail market.”

Arthur scoffed, though his eyes lingered on the jacket. ”So what? You want me to replicate a thrift-store jacket? Kid, I run a factory, not a boutique. I don’t spin up my assembly lines for a vanity project unless you’re writing a check for fifty grand upfront to cover the tooling and the dead-stock leather.”

”I am not writing you a check for fifty grand, Arthur. In fact, I am not writing you a check at all,” Elias smiled, executing the Win-Win Parasite with surgical, sociopathic precision.

Arthur’s face turned bright red. ”Then get the hell out of my office!”

”You will front the manufacturing costs,” Elias whispered smoothly, his Master Pitch skill completely neutralizing the CEO’s outrage. ”You have thousands of yards of excess, mid-grade black leather sitting in your warehouses, depreciating daily because the 1980s bomber-jacket trend is dead. You are bleeding holding costs. I am offering you an immediate liquidation strategy.”

Elias tapped the Nielsen chart.

”You will utilize your dead-stock to manufacture ten thousand exact replicas of my jacket. We will brand it ’The Sovereign Leather’. You handle the logistics and the mail-order fulfillment,” Elias proposed, the terms entirely dictatorial. ”In exchange for your upfront capital expenditure, Sovereign Media will grant you thirty percent of the gross retail margin. We take seventy percent for the intellectual property and the marketing.”

Arthur stared at him, utterly bewildered. ”Seventy-thirty?! In your favor?! You want me to front the labor, the materials, and the shipping, and you take seventy percent of the gross just for putting your name on it?! That’s a hostage negotiation, not a business deal!”

”It is a monopoly, Arthur,” Elias corrected, his dark eyes turning into cold, unblinking voids. ”If I walk out of this office and take this prototype to a manufacturer in Mexico, you will spend the next three years paying storage fees on dead cowhide. I am offering you thirty percent of a guaranteed, multi-million-dollar pop-culture phenomenon. You are not manufacturing a jacket; you are printing money.”

A massive, highly visible sweatdrop rolled down Arthur’s temple, dripping onto his coffee-stained tie.

The logic was brutal. It was incredibly greedy. But it was mathematically undeniable. Arthur was sitting on worthless inventory, and this terrifying teenager was offering him a direct, explosive pipeline to the youth demographic.

”Ten thousand units,” Arthur choked out, his voice cracking as his business acumen surrendered to his greed. ”At a retail price of... what?”

”One hundred and fifty dollars,” Elias dictated seamlessly. ”A premium price point to artificially inflate its perceived cultural value.”

Arthur did the math in his head. One and a half million dollars in gross revenue. Even at thirty percent, it was a massive, unexpected windfall.

With a tragic, pathetic groan of an executive who knew he was being legally robbed but couldn’t afford to say no, Arthur pulled a contract template from his drawer. He hastily scribbled in the predatory 70/30 split, signed it with a shaking hand, and pushed it across the desk.

”You’re a parasite, kid,” Arthur hissed, wiping his forehead. ”I’ll have the prototypes cut by tonight.”

”A flawless logistical decision,” Elias nodded, seamlessly pocketing the contract.

He turned on his heel and walked out of the office, stepping back into the sweltering heat where Paul Rudd was waiting by the rusted Civic, hyperventilating.

”Did we get the jackets?” Paul panicked. ”Did you have to pay him?!”

”I do not pay for inventory, Paul. I franchise my aesthetic,” Elias murmured, sliding into the driver’s seat.

Deep in his cerebral cortex, the system erupted in a golden symphony of applause.

Elias felt his CP balance tick up to 360. The daily toll immediately followed, indifferent to his victory.

His liquid cash settled at $519,750.00. The physical cash was secure. Now, he needed to manufacture the demand.

That evening, the atmosphere inside the Sovereign Studios warehouse was heavily volatile.

Two identical, freshly stitched prototype ’Sovereign Leather’ jackets hung on a rolling rack in the center of the room.

Standing on either side of the rack, glaring at each other with the intensity of two warring nations, were Charlize Theron and Cindy Crawford.

”It’s a matter of brand consistency, Elias,” Cindy purred, her dark eyes flashing as she adjusted the belt of her designer trench coat. She didn’t look at Charlize. ”I am an established, global fashion icon. If I wear the prototype for the paparazzi tonight, it instantly elevates the garment from ’band merchandise’ to high fashion.”

”Oh, please,” Charlize scoffed, her South African accent thick with territorial aggression. She crossed her arms, projecting pure Hollywood royalty. ”You’re too polished, Cindy. The entire point of the video was Grunge. Raw, cinematic rebellion. If you wear it, it looks like a costume. If I wear it, it looks authentic.”

Paul Rudd whimpered from his desk, hiding his face behind a ledger. ”They’re going to burn the building down, Elias. Just give them both a jacket and let them fight it out in the parking lot.”

Elias van Kempen did not flinch. He stepped out of his glass office, projecting the absolute, heavy dominance of a Devoted Boss who refused to indulge in petty squabbles.

He walked directly to the rolling rack. He took both jackets off their hangers.

”You are both approaching this from a perspective of artificial scarcity,” Elias stated, his baritone voice a smooth, commanding rumble that instantly silenced the room.

He walked up to Cindy and seamlessly draped one of the leather jackets over her shoulders. The heavy, masculine cut of the leather contrasted violently and beautifully with her elegant trench coat.

He then turned and tossed the second jacket perfectly to Charlize, who caught it with a surprised blink.

”I am not choosing between my assets,” Elias declared effortlessly, his dark eyes locking onto both women with a gaze so intensely magnetic it completely short-circuited their rivalry. ”You are both wearing the jackets. Tonight.”

”Wait, both of us?” Charlize frowned, slipping the jacket on. ”To where?”

”To The Ivy on Robertson Boulevard,” Elias smiled, a dark, utterly shameless expression. ”You are going to have a highly publicized, deeply affectionate dinner together. You will request the patio seating. You will not wear any other identifiable designer logos.”

Cindy raised an eyebrow, recognizing the play immediately. ”You want us to act as walking billboards for your merchandise line. We’re going to get swarmed by the paparazzi.”

”Exactly,” Elias purred. ”Tommy Mottola believes he has silenced me because he blocked my compact discs. Tomorrow morning, when the tabloids print photographs of the two most desired women in Los Angeles wearing identical ’Sovereign Leather’ jackets, the MTV demographic will not just want the song. They will want the uniform.”

Elias turned back to his office. ”Enjoy your dinner, ladies. The company is not paying for your salads.”

Charlize and Cindy exchanged a look. They had been completely outmaneuvered, their jealousy weaponized into a free, global marketing campaign. They couldn’t even be mad; the sheer, sociopathic genius of the man was intoxicating.

”He’s an absolute bastard,” Charlize muttered, adjusting the collar of the leather jacket.

”Yes,” Cindy smirked, linking her arm through Charlize’s. ”But he’s our bastard. Come on. Let’s go sell some jackets.”

The following morning, in a sprawling, glass-walled executive suite overlooking Manhattan, Tommy Mottola was in an exceptionally good mood.

The CEO of Sony Music sat behind his desk, sipping an espresso. He had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy up the West Coast’s supply of polycarbonate resin. His internal spies reported that Sovereign Manufacturing had completely halted CD production. Elias van Kempen’s ”Bitter Sweet Symphony” was effectively bleeding to death without physical distribution.

”I told you,” Tommy gloated to his Senior VP of Marketing, who was sitting nervously across the desk. ”You cut off the oxygen, the fire dies. The kid is bankrupt by Friday.”

The heavy oak doors of the office suddenly burst open.

Tommy’s executive assistant rushed in, looking completely terrified, clutching a stack of freshly printed trade magazines and a rapidly updating sales ledger.

”Tommy,” the assistant gasped, out of breath. ”You need to see this.”

Tommy frowned, taking the newspaper.

The front page of the New York Post featured a massive, full-color photograph of Cindy Crawford and Charlize Theron exiting The Ivy in Los Angeles, blinding paparazzi flashbulbs illuminating them. They were both wearing identical, brooding, oversized vintage leather jackets.

The headline screamed: THE SOVEREIGN AESTHETIC: HOW ONE JACKET IS DEFINING THE GRUNGE REVOLUTION.

”What is this?” Tommy snapped, throwing the paper onto the desk. ”They’re wearing jackets. Who cares?”

”Tommy, you don’t understand,” the assistant whimpered, sliding the sales ledger across the polished wood. ”The kid... Elias. He bypassed the record stores entirely. He set up a 1-800 mail-order number on MTV during the music video broadcasts. He’s selling the jackets directly to the consumers.”

Tommy Mottola froze. The espresso cup hovered near his lips. ”Selling jackets?”

”The phone lines crashed this morning,” the assistant choked out, a massive sweatdrop rolling down his face. ”According to our retail moles... Sovereign Media took fifty thousand pre-orders for the leather jackets in the last twelve hours. At a hundred and fifty dollars a pop. Tommy... the kid just grossed seven and a half million dollars in retail merchandise overnight.”

The espresso cup slipped from Tommy Mottola’s fingers. It shattered against the mahogany desk, spilling dark, hot coffee over his pristine white cuffs.

The CEO of Sony Music stared at the ledger, his face draining of all blood, his heart hammering a frantic, terrifying rhythm against his ribs.

He had spent a fortune trying to stop Elias van Kempen from selling fifteen-dollar CDs.

In response, the sixteen-year-old sociopath had completely ignored the music industry, pivoted into high-end fashion logistics, and made millions of dollars selling clothes.

Tommy Mottola slumped back in his chair, staring blankly at the ruined espresso on his desk, realizing with horrifying clarity that he was fighting a war against a ghost who didn’t play by the rules of reality.
