Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Soundtrack Monopoly

Early September 1993. The subterranean editing bays of Sovereign Studios smelled heavily of heated celluloid, stale espresso, and cinematic desperation.

The post-production phase of Se7en was running at a brutal, relentless pace. Inside Bay 3, the glow of the dual monitors illuminated David Fincher’s exhausted features. The director was slouched in a rolling chair, rapidly clicking a pen against his knee as he stared at the opening credit sequence. It was a chaotic, meticulously terrifying montage of the antagonist’s manic diaries—scrawled text, razor blades, and stitched bindings flickering in rapid succession.

Visually, it was a masterpiece. Sonically, it was dead.

”It’s just not working,” Fincher muttered, aggressively rubbing his eyes until he saw stars. ”The temp track is too clean. It feels like a standard Tuesday night police procedural. I need something that sounds like a machine grinding bones. I need the audience to feel deeply, profoundly uncomfortable before Brad Pitt even says his first line.”

Elias van Kempen stood leaning against the soundproofed doorframe. He wore a dark, tailored moto jacket over a charcoal henley, his arms crossed in a posture of effortless, street-smart swagger. He didn’t offer a sympathetic nod. He simply reached into his pocket and produced a blank cassette tape.

He had spent three hours in a recording booth the previous night, meticulously recreating a track from his future memory—a grinding, industrial masterpiece originally destined to be written by Trent Reznor a year from now.

”I believe you are looking for a sonic infection, David,” Elias said, pushing off the doorframe. He walked over to the heavy analog deck beneath the monitors and slotted the tape in. ”Listen to the architecture.”

He hit play.

A heavy, distorted, synthesized drumbeat kicked in. It was a slow, pulsing, filthy rhythm that felt less like music and more like a predator’s heartbeat. Then, Elias’s voice cut through the monitors—a digitally degraded, breathy whisper that layered raw vulnerability over an aggressive, synthetic baseline.

You let me violate you...You let me desecrate you...

It was ”Closer.” Stripped of any pop sensibility, engineered purely to evoke isolation and dark, obsessive compulsion.

Fincher stopped clicking his pen. He slowly leaned forward, his eyes locked on the monitors as the grinding audio synced flawlessly with the chaotic visuals of the killer’s diaries. The synergy was visceral. The track didn’t just accompany the imagery; it dragged it into the gutter and choked it.

”That’s it,” Fincher breathed, a manic light igniting in his eyes. He spun his chair around to face Elias. ”That is the soul of the movie. It’s perfect. It’s filthy. Who owns this? What label do I have to call?”

”You don’t call a label, David. You are looking at the publisher,” Elias replied, ejecting the tape with a casual flick of his wrist.

Before Fincher could celebrate, the heavy door to the editing bay swung open.

Gary, a Music Executive for New Line Cinema, marched in. He was a man in his mid-forties whose suit jacket strained visibly around his midsection. He carried a clipboard and an expression of perpetual, bureaucratic annoyance. He was the man responsible for keeping the film’s auditory elements under budget, a task that had become a waking nightmare ever since the studio lost their overseas leverage in the Mojave Desert.

”I heard the bass bleeding through the walls,” Gary sighed, loosening his tie as if the very concept of paying for art exhausted him. He pointed at the tape in Elias’s hand. ”Don’t tell me you two are falling in love with an original track. We don’t have the runway for it.”

”Gary, this is the opening sequence,” Fincher snapped, immediately defensive, jumping up from his chair. ”It sets the entire tone. Van Kempen owns the track. Draft the licensing agreement.”

Gary chuckled—a dry, offensively patronizing sound. He clicked his pen and looked at Elias. ”Alright, kid. We’re running on fumes here. That severed-head stunt tapped out our contingency funds. I can offer you a standard indie sync fee. Five thousand dollars for the opening credits.”

Paul Rudd, who had been sitting quietly in the corner meticulously logging continuity notes, suddenly stood up. His jaw dropped so fast he practically unhinged it.

”Five thousand dollars?” Paul sputtered, frantically polishing his glasses as his voice jumped an octave. ”Gary, are you out of your mind? That track is a guaranteed platinum single! It’s an industrial masterpiece! Five thousand dollars won’t even cover the studio time to mix it down!”

”Then use Vivaldi,” Gary retorted, completely unfazed by Paul’s impending panic attack. ”Classical music is in the public domain. It costs the studio exactly zero dollars. I am not authorizing a hundred-grand pop-star advance for a movie that half the executives still think is going to bomb. You want your song in the movie, kid? Take the five grand, be grateful for the exposure, or we use Mozart.”

Paul turned an alarming shade of red, looking like he was about to physically assault the executive with a reel of celluloid. It was a blatant, insulting lowball designed to exploit a supposedly desperate independent artist.

Elias did not get angry. He did not puff out his chest or throw a temper tantrum. He understood the fundamental rule of the Hollywood ecosystem: executives were not evil; they were simply terrified of their accounting departments. Gary was trying to save his departmental budget to secure his own end-of-year bonus.

Elias mentally engaged the digital loan shark resting in his cerebral cortex, trading a fraction of his accumulated capital for absolute persuasive supremacy.

[CHA-CHING!]

The skill flooded his vocal cords, layering his natural, street-smart ease with the cold, irrefutable logic of a corporate titan. Elias stepped away from the audio deck, slipping his hands into his pockets.

”Relax, Paul,” Elias murmured, casting a brief, entirely unbothered glance at his panicked assistant. ”Gary is merely a custodian of an empty vault. You cannot extract blood from a stone.”

Elias turned his dark, unblinking eyes back to the music executive. He completely dropped his casual demeanor, sliding effortlessly into Mode CEO Mafia.

”You are correct, Gary,” Elias stated, his tone shifting into the frigid, absolute cadence of a corporate executioner. ”The studio’s post-production liquidity is drained. Forcing you to requisition a hundred-thousand-dollar upfront sync fee would require you to beg Michael for a budget extension, thereby making you look incompetent.”

Gary shifted uncomfortably, clearing his throat. The teenager had just accurately diagnosed his exact corporate insecurity in two sentences.

”So, I will offer you a structural bailout,” Elias continued, leaning against the edge of the editing console. He didn’t ask; he presented a Win-Win Parasite. ”Sovereign Media will grant New Line Cinema the primary synchronization license to feature ’Closer’ in the opening credits of Se7en. The upfront cost to your department will be exactly zero dollars.”

Fincher blinked rapidly. Paul let out a quiet, strangled gasp, his knees buckling as he slid down the wall until he was sitting on the carpet, clutching his chest. His boss had just given away a multi-million-dollar asset for free.

”Zero?” Gary asked, his eyes narrowing in deep suspicion. ”You’re giving us the track for free?”

”I am subsidizing your severely mismanaged budget,” Elias corrected flawlessly. ”You get the perfect cinematic anchor for your opening sequence. Your ledger remains balanced. You return to the studio looking like a masterful negotiator who secured a premium asset for nothing.”

Gary licked his lips. It was the ultimate carrot. It saved his job and protected his bonus. ”Alright. What’s the catch? Nobody gives away a track for free.”

Elias offered a slow, impossibly sharp smile. It was the smile of a predator holding the door open for a very oblivious sheep.

”In exchange for the zero-dollar upfront license,” Elias dictated, the steel trap snapping shut, ”Sovereign Media requires two minor concessions. First, we retain one hundred percent of the physical distribution and manufacturing rights for the Official Se7en Motion Picture Soundtrack Album. Second, Sovereign Media retains full administration of all secondary sync licensing—meaning we collect the performance royalties directly whenever the film is broadcast on premium cable or network television.”

Gary stared at Elias, his mind rapidly processing the terms.

To the music executive, it sounded like a joke. Soundtrack albums for dark, depressing, R-rated serial killer movies historically sold abysmally. Teenagers bought soundtracks for romantic comedies or action blockbusters, not for movies featuring rain and decapitations. And secondary broadcast royalties were a minor, slow-drip revenue stream that studio accountants rarely cared about compared to box office returns.

The kid was trading a guaranteed hundred grand today for a piece of a pie that Gary believed would never exist.

Gary let out a loud, genuine laugh, slapping his clipboard against his thigh. ”You want the soundtrack album rights? For a movie where a guy cuts pieces off his victims? Knock yourself out, kid. I’ll have legal draft the addendum. Zero upfront, you keep the physical album and the TV syncs. Deal.”

”A highly rational decision,” Elias nodded politely.

Gary practically jogged out of the editing bay, eager to get the paperwork signed before the teenager realized how badly he had just been screwed.

The heavy door clicked shut.

Paul Rudd immediately scrambled up from the floor, his eyes wild.

”Elias, what did you just do?!” Paul hissed, his voice vibrating with absolute despair. ”You just gave away an industrial masterpiece for free! You let that cheap suit walk all over you! Who buys a soundtrack album for a movie about the Seven Deadly Sins?! We could have fought him for fifty grand! We could have used that money for marketing!”

Fincher, equally baffled, leaned back in his chair. ”I mean, I’m thrilled I get the song, Elias. But Paul is right. The studio just robbed you blind. The soundtrack for this is going to sell maybe ten thousand copies on cassette to some goth kids in Seattle.”

Elias van Kempen did not look defeated. He looked at his two colleagues with an expression of profound, pitying amusement.

”Paul. David,” Elias murmured, picking up a dry-erase marker from the editing console and stepping over to a blank whiteboard on the wall. ”You are both evaluating this transaction through the lens of traditional Hollywood economics. You are focusing on the initial fee. I do not care about the initial fee. I care about the monopoly.”

Elias drew a large circle on the board and wrote Se7en inside it.

”You both know the script. You know the ending we secured in the desert,” Elias stated, his voice steady and absolute. ”This film is not going to be a moderate success. It is going to be a cultural trauma. It will dominate the box office, and it will become a permanent fixture in the global cinematic lexicon.”

He drew an arrow pointing away from the circle, writing ’CLOSER’ at the end of it.

”When millions of people sit in the dark and watch those opening credits, they will be viscerally assaulted by my track,” Elias explained, his dark eyes gleaming with ruthless calculation. ”The song will become inextricably linked to the cultural phenomenon of the movie. They won’t just want the single. They will want the entire atmospheric experience.”

Elias drew a massive box around the word ’SOUNDTRACK’.

”Normally, a studio pays a musician a flat fee, and then the studio’s record label prints the soundtrack, pocketing fifteen dollars for every CD sold,” Elias broke down the math, his tone turning into a chilling lecture on corporate raiding. ”By relinquishing the upfront fee, I legally severed New Line Cinema from their own merchandise. Because I own Sovereign Manufacturing, I will press the CDs myself for eighty cents a unit. I will sell them to Tower Records for ten dollars a unit. When this film grosses a hundred million dollars, and we sell two million copies of the soundtrack album, I will not receive a royalty check. I will receive the entire gross retail margin.”

Paul’s jaw slowly dropped. The color rushed back to his face, replaced by a look of dawning, horrified comprehension.

”Twenty million dollars,” Paul whispered, his eyes crossing slightly as he did the mental math. ”You gave up a hundred grand... to steal twenty million dollars from their merchandising department.”

”It is the Double-Dip, Paul,” Elias smiled, tapping the marker against the board. ”But that is merely the physical revenue. The true beauty lies in the secondary broadcast rights.”

Elias drew a final, unending line across the bottom of the board.

”Gary assumed TV sync royalties are pennies,” Elias continued. ”But he forgot that a movie of this magnitude will be licensed to HBO, Showtime, and global cable networks for the next thirty years. Every single time Se7en airs on a television screen in Germany, Japan, or Brazil, the broadcast networks must pay a performance royalty for the opening credit music. Because I retained the secondary sync rights, those global networks will pay me directly. New Line Cinema will inadvertently act as my unpaid, perpetual marketing firm for the next three decades.”

Fincher stared at the whiteboard, utterly speechless. He looked at Elias, a man who had just seamlessly transformed a budget dispute into a multi-generational wealth-generating engine.

”You didn’t give them the song for free,” Fincher realized, shaking his head in absolute awe. ”You planted a parasite in the opening frames of my movie.”

”I prefer the term ’symbiotic financial architecture’,” Elias corrected smoothly, tossing the marker onto the tray. ”You receive the perfect aesthetic tone. I receive the kingdom. It is the purest definition of a win-win scenario.”

As Elias stepped away from the board, adjusting the collar of his jacket, the digital loan shark inside his mind erupted in a glorious, golden symphony of supreme capitalist validation.

Elias felt the subtle, warm integration of the system points. He checked his mental ledger. The daily maintenance fee cycled through its inevitable deduction.

[DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

His liquid cash balanced at $502,750.00. He had spent exactly zero dollars today, yet he had secured a financial stranglehold on the most anticipated thriller of the decade.

”Come along, Paul,” Elias ordered, turning toward the heavy soundproof door. ”We need to return to the Sovereign lot. We have a wardrobe to extort for the upcoming screenings.”

Paul scrambled out of his rolling chair, clutching his continuity notes like a shield. He looked back at Fincher, offering a helpless, terrified shrug, before hurrying after his boss.

Elias walked down the dim corridors of the post-production facility, his stride unhurried and absolute. The executives in their glass towers thought they controlled the game because they wrote the initial checks. They didn’t understand that the true power lay in owning the pipes through which the money flowed.

And Elias van Kempen owned all the pipes.
