Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Grunge Angel Investor

Late September 1993. The Los Angeles morning broke through the massive, acoustic-glass windows of Sovereign Studios, casting sharp, geometric shadows over Elias van Kempen’s mahogany desk. The ambient temperature was perfectly regulated, a stark contrast to the grueling underground violence he had orchestrated the night before.

Resting on the polished wood, directly beside a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills, was the morning edition of Women’s Wear Daily.

Elias didn’t read the fluff pieces. His dark, predatory eyes zeroed in on a bold headline dominating the front page.

PERRY ELLIS FIRES MARC JACOBS OVER INFAMOUS ’GRUNGE’ COLLECTION.

The article detailed the catastrophic fallout of Jacobs’s Spring 1993 collection. Conservative executives at Perry Ellis had been absolutely horrified by the sight of silk flannel shirts, thermal Henley layers, heavy combat boots, and slip dresses parading down the runway. To the entrenched, 1980s-minded fashion elite, it was an insult to luxury. They had unceremoniously fired Marc Jacobs and his longtime business partner, Robert Duffy, effectively branding the collection as unmarketable trash.

Elias van Kempen slowly lowered the newspaper. A dark, terrifyingly serene smile curved his lips.

The establishment saw a corporate disaster. Elias saw the exact blueprint of the next decade’s aesthetic, currently sitting abandoned in the gutter, waiting to be purchased for the price of a used sedan.

He didn’t hesitate. He pulled an empty silver aluminum briefcase from beneath his desk and began methodically stacking banded bricks of his underground fight earnings into the foam lining.

”Paul,” Elias commanded, his baritone voice a smooth, lethal hum that echoed into the hallway. ”Cancel all studio tours for the next forty-eight hours. Secure two airline tickets to John F. Kennedy International Airport.”

Paul Rudd scrambled into the office, his Anti-Awkwardness Sunglasses sitting lopsided on his face. He looked at the cash, then at the briefcase. ”New York? Elias, we just got back from a mob basement! We have half a million dollars in liquid cash! Can we please just rest? I haven’t slept horizontally in three days!”

”Sleep is a biological inefficiency when the market is bleeding, Paul,” Elias stated, snapping the briefcase shut and securing the combination lock. ”We are flying to Manhattan to acquire the foundation of the 1990s fashion industry.”

Paul’s eyes lit up slightly. ”Acquire? Okay, wait. If we’re flying to New York to make a major acquisition, that means we’re flying first class, right? We’re taking the red-eye in those big, reclining leather seats?”

”I have authorized an expenditure of three hundred dollars for two standby, deep-economy tickets,” Elias replied flawlessly, stripping the joy from Paul’s soul with clinical precision. ”We will be seated in row thirty-eight, directly adjacent to the rear lavatory. The proximity to the plumbing infrastructure ensures maximum ticket depreciation.”

Paul let out a tragic, high-pitched squeak, collapsing against the doorframe. ”I hate you. I genuinely, legally hate you.”

Deep in Elias’s cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark aggressively logged the logistics.

Elias ignored the phantom pain in his chest as his balance ticked down. Capital preservation was the ultimate religion.

Fourteen hours later, they stepped out of a yellow cab onto the cobblestone streets of SoHo, Manhattan. The late September air carried a brisk, biting autumn chill. Paul was walking with a severe limp, rubbing his lower back and muttering curses about the structural integrity of commercial airline seats.

Elias, wearing his faded vintage leather jacket over a crisp white t-shirt, looked completely unbothered. His aesthetic was the perfect camouflage for the artistic, gritty neighborhood.

He navigated the streets using his Photographic Memory, cross-referencing industry rumors until they arrived at an upscale, dimly lit café known for harboring fashion executives during business hours.

Elias spotted his target immediately.

Sitting in a secluded corner booth, surrounded by overflowing ashtrays and empty espresso cups, was Robert Duffy.

Duffy was the brilliant, pragmatic business mind behind Marc Jacobs. If Marc was the creative visionary, Duffy was the shield, the negotiator, and the architect. Right now, however, the architect looked exhausted. He was speaking frantically into a heavy brick cellular phone, rubbing his temples as he listened to the voice on the other end.

”I’m telling you, it’s not a fad, it’s a paradigm shift,” Duffy argued into the receiver, his voice tight with stress. ”The youth demographic... look, I know what the Perry Ellis board said, but they’re dinosaurs! We have the backing of... hello? Hello?!”

Duffy pulled the phone away from his ear, glaring at it as the line went dead. Another investor had hung up on him. The corporate fashion world was currently treating the Marc Jacobs brand like a terminal disease.

Elias didn’t wait for an invitation. He glided across the café floor with the absolute, suffocating confidence of an apex predator.

He slid seamlessly into the leather booth directly across from Duffy, placing the silver briefcase onto the table with a heavy, authoritative thud.

Duffy jumped, startled by the sudden intrusion. His eyes darted to the briefcase, then up to Elias’s striking, exotic face. Recognition flickered in the executive’s eyes. You couldn’t walk through Times Square without seeing Elias’s brooding, fifty-foot torso plastered on the Calvin Klein billboard.

”Van Kempen,” Duffy said, his tone a mixture of surprise and immediate, defensive skepticism. He aggressively put out his cigarette. ”I know who you are. The CK kid. The one who made John Casablancas look like a fool in Milan. What do you want? I don’t book models, and I certainly don’t have the budget for your day rate right now.”

Elias did not smile. He didn’t offer a polite Hollywood greeting. He leaned back in the booth, projecting the dark, immovable gravity of a billionaire holding company.

”I am not here to audition for you, Robert,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a smooth, velvet hammer that effortlessly commanded the acoustic space of the table. ”I am here to purchase your survival.”

Duffy scoffed, leaning back and crossing his arms. He was a seasoned veteran; he didn’t intimidate easily, especially not by sixteen-year-old boys in thrift-store jackets.

”My survival?” Duffy laughed, a harsh, cynical sound. ”Look around, kid. Marc and I just made the biggest noise this industry has heard in a decade. We have Anna Wintour putting our pieces in Vogue. The ’Big Five’—Naomi, Christy, Linda—they walked our runway for free because they believe in the vision. We have the absolute, undisputed moral high ground in fashion right now. I don’t need survival money from a teenager.”

It was a beautiful, desperate bluff. Duffy was bleeding cash, but he was projecting invincibility.

Elias mentally engaged the digital loan shark. He needed to absolutely annihilate the man’s romanticized illusion of the industry.

[CHA-CHING!]

The skill flooded his vocal cords, layering his words with an inescapable, terrifyingly persuasive logic. Elias leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, executing the Intellectual Face-Slapping with surgical precision.

”Dukungan moral dari Anna Wintour tidak bisa digunakan untuk membayar sewa pabrik tekstil, Robert,” Elias whispered, his eyes turning into cold, unblinking voids of pure capitalist reality. (Moral support from Anna Wintour cannot be used to pay the rent for a textile factory, Robert.)

Duffy’s arrogant smirk faltered slightly.

”And the supermodels?” Elias continued, twisting the psychological knife. ”They walked for free because it was a spectacle. But supermodels are a depreciating marketing asset if there is no physical retail inventory to move. Grace Coddington can shoot your silk flannels in Vogue all year, but if you don’t have the capital to manufacture the garments, box them, and ship them to department stores, you are not a fashion brand. You are a museum exhibit.”

Duffy swallowed hard. A faint sheen of sweat appeared on his forehead. The kid was mathematically dismantling his entire defense.

”Your severance package from Perry Ellis is running out,” Elias diagnosed, utilizing the Information Arbitrage he had gathered from the trades. ”You are calling mid-tier venture capitalists who do not understand the aesthetic. You are weeks away from declaring bankruptcy, which will force Marc to take a ghost-designing job at an inferior label just to pay his rent in Chelsea. You do not have the high ground, Robert. You are drowning.”

The silence in the booth was absolute. The background noise of the café seemed to fade entirely.

Duffy stared at the teenager. He felt entirely exposed. The kid wasn’t speaking like a model; he was speaking like a Wall Street liquidator who held the mortgage to his soul.

”What do you want?” Duffy choked out, his voice losing all its bluster, reduced to the exhausted rasp of a man who knew he was out of options.

Elias didn’t answer immediately. He slowly reached out, popped the dual latches on the silver briefcase, and flipped the lid open.

Sitting inside, perfectly banded and crisply stacked, was twenty thousand dollars in physical, untraceable American cash.

Duffy’s eyes widened. In 1993, twenty thousand dollars of immediate, un-invoiced liquidity was enough to secure a small studio space, hire a pattern maker, and keep the lights on while they drafted their next collection. It was a lifeline.

”I am offering you emergency seed funding to officially incorporate Marc Jacobs International,” Elias dictated smoothly, laying out the Win-Win Parasite. ”This capital will bridge your operational gap. In exchange, Sovereign Media will acquire fifteen percent of the Founder’s Equity in the new corporate entity. In perpetuity.”

”Fifteen percent?!” Duffy hissed, his business instincts flaring back to life despite the desperation. ”Are you insane?! You want fifteen percent of everything we ever build for twenty grand?! That’s a loan shark rate!”

”It is a highly subsidized partnership rate,” Elias corrected flawlessly, ignoring the insult. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a single, heavily circulated photograph. It was a still from the MTV broadcast of the ”Creep” music video.

He slid the photo across the table.

”You have the clothes, Robert, but you lack the distribution pipeline for the demographic,” Elias explained, his voice dropping into a dark, hypnotic register. ”The conservative buyers at Saks and Neiman Marcus will not stock Grunge. But I own the MTV airwaves. I have millions of teenagers staring at my aesthetic on a daily loop. Sovereign Media will retain the exclusive licensing rights to distribute your entry-level Grunge patterns to the youth retail market. You design it, I wear it on television, and we split the gross.”

Duffy stared at the photograph. He looked at the twenty thousand dollars in the briefcase.

His brilliant, mathematical mind ran the projections. The major luxury conglomerates, like LVMH, wouldn’t touch Marc Jacobs for another four years. Until then, they were in the wilderness. The cash Elias was offering was oxygen. The MTV integration was a guaranteed marketing pipeline that bypassed the traditional, snobbish fashion gatekeepers entirely.

It was a deal with the devil, but the devil was offering the exact infrastructure they needed to survive.

A massive, highly visible sweatdrop rolled down Duffy’s temple, dripping onto the collar of his shirt. He looked at Elias’s dead, uncompromising eyes.

”Fifteen percent,” Duffy whispered, feeling the weight of the extortion, yet entirely unable to refuse the logic. ”You don’t interfere with Marc’s creative process. You just handle the youth retail licensing.”

”I am a fiduciary, Robert, not a seamstress,” Elias smiled, a dark, victorious expression. ”I only care about the margins.”

Duffy let out a long, shuddering sigh of a man surrendering a piece of his future to a superior predator. He reached across the table, extending a slightly trembling hand.

Elias gripped it firmly. The handshake was absolute.

Deep within Elias’s neural pathways, the digital loan shark erupted in a glorious, golden symphony of applause.

Elias felt the warm surge of CP restock his arsenal, bringing his balance to a secure 360 points.

He closed the briefcase and slid it across the table to Duffy.

”My lawyers will fax the incorporation documents to your Chelsea apartment by tomorrow morning,” Elias murmured smoothly, standing up from the booth.

He turned and walked toward the exit, where Paul Rudd was leaning against the wall, clutching his lower back in agony.

”Did we buy a clothing store?” Paul wheezed.

”We bought the 1990s, Paul,” Elias corrected, pushing the cafe doors open and stepping out into the cold New York air. ”Now, we return to Los Angeles. I refuse to pay for a hotel room in this city.”
