Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Guerilla Symphony Hack

The second week of October 1993 brought a deceptive, golden warmth to the sprawling concrete of Hollywood Boulevard. The Walk of Fame was a chaotic artery of tourists, street performers, and struggling actors, all baking under the California sun.

In a narrow alleyway just off the main boulevard, Paul Rudd was currently experiencing a profound, hyperventilating crisis of faith.

He was clutching a single, brightly colored sheet of municipal paper to his chest, his knuckles entirely white. He looked at Elias van Kempen, who was standing in the shade of a brick wall, methodically counting out crisp ten-dollar bills from a thick stack of cash.

”Elias, this is a suicide mission,” Paul wheezed, adjusting his Anti-Awkwardness Sunglasses, which were currently doing absolutely nothing to stop his trembling. ”You want to shoot a music video on the busiest sidewalk in Los Angeles. A commercial film permit with a police escort and street closures costs twenty thousand dollars! And you made me go to City Hall and register this as a ’Small-Scale Pedestrian Assembly Under the First Amendment’!”

Paul waved the paper frantically. ”This permit cost fifty dollars! Fifty! We have over half a million dollars in the bank! If the LAPD sees a film crew blocking the Walk of Fame without a commercial permit, they won’t just fine us. They are going to hit us with batons!”

Elias didn’t look up from his cash. He smoothly handed a ten-dollar bill to a scruffy, eager-looking UCLA drama student standing in a line of exactly fifty identical youths.

”Thank you, Chad. Remember your motivation. You are a pedestrian. You are deeply offended,” Elias murmured, moving to the next student in line.

He turned his dark, predatory eyes toward his Executive Assistant.

”A twenty-thousand-dollar commercial permit is a bureaucratic extortion tax designed to bleed bloated studio budgets, Paul,” Elias explained, his baritone voice a smooth, cold rumble of pure capitalist logic. ”We are operating a guerrilla production. Furthermore, I am mitigating all genuine civil liability.”

Elias handed the last ten-dollar bill to a female student in a flannel shirt.

Deep within his cerebral cortex, the digital loan shark registered the operational expenses with a series of quiet, mechanical chimes.

Elias ignored the phantom sting in his chest. Six hundred dollars was a microscopic price for cinematic immortality.

”The defining visual of this music video requires me to walk in a straight line, aggressively bumping into oncoming pedestrians without breaking stride,” Elias dictated, stepping back to survey his fifty hired college students. ”If I were to physically assault real civilians, the resulting lawsuits for battery and emotional distress would bankrupt Sovereign Media before sunset. Therefore, I have engaged an independent workforce.”

Elias pointed a long, elegant finger at the students.

”These individuals have been compensated ten dollars each to walk toward me and absorb the kinetic impact of my shoulder,” Elias said, a dark, utterly shameless smile curving his lips. ”If the police arrive, we are not a film crew. We are an organized, constitutionally protected protest against the commercialization of personal space. The Bolex camera is simply documenting our civic engagement.”

Spike Jonze, currently balancing on the lowered tailgate of a battered, slow-moving Ford pickup truck, let out a loud, manic laugh. He was holding a 16mm camera rig, his eyes wide with visionary excitement.

”It’s brilliant, man!” Spike yelled, slapping the side of the truck. ”It’s so raw! It’s street-level anti-establishment art funded by a technicality! I love it! Let’s hit the pavement!”

Elias slipped his hands into the pockets of his faded vintage leather jacket. He rolled his shoulders, his posture locking into an aura of absolute, untouchable aristocratic apathy.

He mentally engaged the digital loan shark. He needed the real civilians to part like the Red Sea, leaving only his paid extras in the strike zone.

[CHA-CHING!]

The air around Elias instantly thickened, dropping the ambient temperature by ten degrees. He didn’t just look like a teenager walking down the street; he projected the suffocating, heavy, magnetic gravity of an apex predator.

”Roll sound,” Elias commanded.

A massive, battery-powered boombox in the bed of the pickup truck erupted. The heavy, dragging drum loop and the majestic, arrogant orchestral strings of ”Bitter Sweet Symphony” blasted across Hollywood Boulevard.

The truck began to roll forward at a crawl. Spike hoisted the camera.

Elias walked out of the alleyway and onto the crowded pavement.

He didn’t swagger. He didn’t look angry. He walked with a deadpan, chillingly indifferent stare, his eyes locked dead ahead on the camera lens. He was the embodiment of grunge royalty—a beautiful, damaged ghost navigating a world he profoundly despised.

”’Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony, this life...”

Elias lip-synced flawlessly, his stride perfectly synchronized with the grinding beat.

Ahead of him, the dense crowd of tourists and real pedestrians naturally, instinctively parted. The Domination Aura forced them to step aside without even realizing why, their subconscious minds violently rejecting the idea of colliding with the dark, overwhelming presence marching toward them.

But the UCLA drama students didn’t move. They had their ten dollars.

Elias didn’t deviate a single millimeter. He walked straight into a tall student in a denim jacket, his shoulder colliding with a heavy, visceral THUD.

The student spun off-balance, executing a flawless, theatrical scowl. ”Hey! Watch where you’re going, man!”

Elias didn’t look back. He didn’t break his lip-sync. He just kept walking.

He slammed his shoulder into a female student carrying a prop shopping bag. The bag hit the pavement. Elias stepped cleanly over it. The visual was magnificent—a man entirely disconnected from the social contract, moving through society like an unstoppable, apathetic machine.

Spike Jonze was practically weeping with joy behind the camera. ”Yes! Keep the dead eyes! It’s magic!”

But Hollywood Boulevard was a volatile ecosystem.

A block ahead, emerging from an upscale sneaker boutique, was a group of five heavily muscled men. They walked with an aggressive, wide-shouldered swagger, laughing loudly, entirely demanding the space around them.

In the center of the entourage was Mark Wahlberg.

’Marky Mark’ was dressed in baggy jeans and a tight white tank top, radiating the try-hard, aggressive bravado of a man who desperately needed the world to acknowledge his toughness.

Mark stopped laughing. His eyes locked onto the slow-moving pickup truck, the blaring boombox, and the teenager walking down the center of the sidewalk.

Mark recognized the vintage leather jacket. He recognized the impossibly handsome, exotic face that had intellectually castrated him and stolen his Calvin Klein thunder in a New York photography studio.

A flush of pure, petty, deeply insecure rage washed over Mark’s face.

”Yo,” Mark sneered to his entourage, pointing a muscular finger at Elias. ”Look at this pretty-boy fake. Thinks he owns the pavement. Watch this.”

Mark didn’t step aside. He aggressively widened his stance, rolling his shoulders, aiming his entire muscular frame directly into Elias’s path. He intended to deliver a brutal, unscripted body-check that would send the skinny teenager sprawling across the concrete in front of the camera, ruining the shoot and establishing his physical dominance.

Paul Rudd, watching from the sidewalk, let out a high-pitched scream. ”Elias! Abort! It’s Wahlberg! He’s not on the payroll!”

Elias van Kempen did not abort. He did not blink.

He was not going to preach corporate economics to a street thug while a 16mm camera was rolling. This was not a boardroom. This was the pavement.

Elias mentally triggered the loan shark.

[CHA-CHING!]

The biological shift was violently absolute. Time dilated. Elias’s central nervous system flooded with the hyper-calibrated, split-second kinetic awareness of a prime heavyweight champion.

Mark Wahlberg lunged forward, throwing his heavy shoulder into what he assumed would be a devastating collision.

Elias didn’t stop singing.

”...Tryna make ends meet, you’re a slave to money then you die...”

With a movement so mechanically precise and impossibly fast it looked like a camera glitch, Elias dropped his center of gravity. He slipped Mark’s charging shoulder by a fraction of an inch.

As Mark stumbled forward into the empty space, Elias’s hand shot out. He gripped the collar of Mark’s tight white tank top, utilizing the actor’s own aggressive momentum.

Elias pivoted on his boot, executed a flawless, brutal judo hip-toss, and drove Mark Wahlberg directly into the unforgiving concrete of Hollywood Boulevard.

SMACK.

The sound of Mark’s back hitting the pavement was sickeningly loud, instantly knocking the wind out of his lungs in a sharp, painful wheeze.

Elias did not pause his stride. He did not look down.

With chilling, aristocratic elegance, Elias smoothly stepped his scuffed boot directly over Mark’s heaving chest, perfectly on beat with the orchestral swell of the song, and continued walking toward the camera.

”Your center of gravity is as weak as your acting, Mark,” Elias murmured, the savage, street-smart trash talk delivered as a cold, apathetic whisper that didn’t disrupt his lip-sync for a single frame.

The four goons in Mark’s entourage froze in absolute, paralyzed horror. They stared at their boss, who was currently gasping like a stranded fish on the sidewalk, and then looked at the teenager who had just slammed him into the earth without breaking his stride. The sheer, mechanical violence of the takedown completely shattered their bravado.

”Keep rolling! Keep rolling! That was the most badass thing I have ever seen in my life!” Spike Jonze shrieked from the back of the truck, completely losing his mind.

From across the street, leaning against a newsstand with an apple halfway to his mouth, Brad Pitt burst into a loud, uninhibited roar of laughter. He had just walked out of a casting office, and he was currently watching Elias execute street justice with the casual boredom of a man swatting a fly.

But the reality of Urban Realism was swift.

”Hey! Hey! Break it up! LAPD!”

Two uniformed Los Angeles police officers, who had been patrolling the boulevard, came sprinting through the crowd, their hands resting on their batons.

”Cut the music!” the lead officer barked, pointing at the pickup truck.

The boombox died. The majestic strings faded into the ambient noise of the terrified crowd.

Mark Wahlberg scrambled to his feet, his face purple with rage and humiliation. He pointed a shaking finger at Elias. ”Officer! Arrest that kid! He just assaulted me! He just threw me into the pavement unprovoked! I want to press charges!”

The police officer turned to Elias, his expression hardening. ”Alright, kid. Hands where I can see them. What the hell is going on here?”

Paul Rudd was practically weeping, clutching the $50 permit like a shield. ”We’re going to jail. I am going to be wearing an orange jumpsuit by noon.”

Elias van Kempen did not raise his hands. He did not look panicked. He slipped seamlessly into Mode CEO Mafia, utilizing the legal alibi he had meticulously constructed for this exact scenario.

Elias reached out and smoothly took the brightly colored municipal permit from Paul’s trembling hands. He presented it to the police officer with absolute, unyielding authority.

”Officer,” Elias stated, his baritone voice a smooth, cold rumble of legal certainty. ”I am the registered organizer of a Class-B Pedestrian Assembly under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. We are engaging in a peaceful, permitted demonstration regarding the corporatization of public walkways.”

The officer frowned, taking the $50 permit. It was heavily stamped and entirely legitimate.

Elias turned his dark, deadpan eyes onto Mark Wahlberg.

”That man,” Elias dictated, executing the Legal Chokehold flawlessly in the middle of the street, ”is an aggressive instigator. He intentionally crossed the municipal right-of-way and initiated unprovoked, physical contact against a peaceful demonstrator to disrupt a constitutionally protected assembly.”

”What?!” Mark shrieked, his eyes bugging out of his head. ”I didn’t disrupt a protest! He’s shooting a music video! He body-slammed me!”

Elias didn’t raise his voice. He looked at the police officer.

”I utilized reasonable, proportionate self-defense to neutralize an active physical threat to my person,” Elias concluded, his logic airtight. ”I am perfectly willing to accompany you to the precinct to file a formal charge of aggravated battery against Mr. Wahlberg, backed by the testimony of my fifty registered assembly participants and the 16mm continuous film evidence sitting in that truck.”

The police officer looked at the camera. He looked at the fifty UCLA drama students, who were all nodding eagerly, having just been paid ten dollars to agree with whatever Elias said.

Then, the officer looked at Mark Wahlberg. Mark was a known hothead in Hollywood. The LAPD didn’t care about his acting career; they cared about paperwork.

”Is that true, Wahlberg?” the officer asked, narrowing his eyes. ”You want to go downtown and officially explain why you’re picking fights with a permitted protest group on camera?”

Mark froze. A massive, highly visible sweatdrop rolled down his temple. If the press found out he was arrested for assaulting a peaceful protester, his management team would crucify him. The PR scandal would be catastrophic. The kid hadn’t just slammed him into the concrete; he had mathematically cornered him with a fifty-dollar piece of paper.

”No,” Mark choked out, rubbing his bruised back, his ego utterly and completely annihilated. ”No. Forget it. I... I tripped.”

Mark turned around and practically sprinted down the boulevard, shoving past his own silent, terrified entourage, desperate to escape the terrifying intellectual and physical dominance of the teenager.

The police officer sighed, handing the permit back to Elias. ”Keep the assembly moving, kid. Don’t block the storefronts.”

”A flawless interaction with municipal law enforcement,” Elias offered a polite nod.

He turned back to the pickup truck. ”Spike. Rewind the tape. We reset from the collision.”

As Elias walked back to his starting mark, utterly unbothered by the fact that he had just engaged in hand-to-hand combat and legal extortion within the span of sixty seconds, the digital loan shark erupted in a glorious, golden symphony of triumph.
