Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Sonic Virus Dominance

Early October 1993. The unforgiving morning sun of Los Angeles baked the asphalt of Hollywood Boulevard, but the interior of Echo Sound Recording was a temperature-controlled fortress of analog elitism.

Paul Rudd staggered through the heavy, soundproofed double doors, his face bright red as he struggled to balance a towering stack of blank, two-inch Ampex master tapes. He looked like a tragic, overworked pack mule dressed in corduroy.

”Elias, my arms are losing blood flow,” Paul wheezed, blindly navigating the plush carpet of the studio lobby. ”Why did we buy analog tape in bulk from a bankrupt warehouse? We own a CD manufacturing plant! Can’t we just sing into a computer?”

”Digital recording in 1993 yields a sterile, compressed audio profile that actively offends the human ear, Paul,” Elias van Kempen replied.

Elias walked ahead, completely unburdened, his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his tailored trousers. He wore a simple, perfectly fitted black t-shirt that highlighted the terrifying, god-tier architecture of his upper body. ”We are capturing a generational anthem. It requires the warmth of magnetic tape. Do not drop the Ampex, or I will deduct the replacement cost directly from your future management commissions.”

Paul whimpered, adjusting his grip as they entered the primary control room of Studio A.

The control room was a shrine to the bloated excess of the late 1980s music industry. An enormous, sixty-four-channel SSL mixing console dominated the space. Behind it sat Harrison.

Harrison was the archetype of the old-guard Hollywood audio engineer. He wore a silk bomber jacket over a loud geometric shirt, a thick gold chain resting against his chest, and his receding hairline was heavily gelled backward. He reeked of stale cigarette smoke, obsolete production philosophies, and the lingering arrogance of a man who still thought synthesizers could solve every musical problem.

Harrison looked up from a clipboard, his eyes slowly traveling over Elias’s flawless, commercially devastating face. A cynical, deeply patronizing smirk spread across the engineer’s lips.

”Ah. You must be the Calvin Klein kid,” Harrison drawled, not bothering to stand up. He tapped a pen against the mixing board. ”Your management booked four hours. Look, kid, I don’t know who told you that having a good jawline means you can sing, but let’s manage expectations. I can throw some heavy reverb on your vocal track, maybe layer it with a Roland TR-808 drum machine. We’ll drown you in MIDI synths. Make it sound like a nice, safe pop record. Just stand in the booth, look pretty, and let the adults do the heavy lifting.”

Paul finally dropped the tapes onto a leather couch with a heavy thud, gasping for air. ”Oh, no,” Paul muttered under his breath, recognizing the exact tone of voice that usually resulted in Elias dismantling a man’s entire life. ”Harrison, buddy, I wouldn’t say things like that...”

Elias did not puff out his chest. He did not yell. He simply walked toward the massive SSL mixing console, projecting the dark, suffocating gravity of a corporate titan observing a severely malfunctioning piece of equipment.

”The track is an acoustic-driven, alternative rock composition titled Creep,” Elias stated, his baritone voice a smooth, icy razor that entirely ignored Harrison’s patronizing pitch. ”It requires zero synthesizers, zero drum machines, and zero input from a producer who is still culturally trapped in 1988.”

Harrison’s smug smile vanished, his face flushing red with instant, defensive anger. ”Listen here, you arrogant little shit. I’ve been mixing records in this town since you were in diapers! You don’t walk into my studio and—”

”I am paying an exorbitant hourly rate to utilize the acoustic isolation of this facility, Harrison, not to fund your outdated creative fantasies,” Elias interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, radiating pure Mode CEO Mafia. ”The instrumental track is already laid down on channel one. You have one job today. You will route my microphone to channel two. You will press the red button labeled ’Record’. And you will physically remove your hands from the equalization faders until I exit the booth. If you attempt to alter the raw frequency of my vocal performance, I will terminate this session and aggressively dispute the credit card charge.”

Harrison opened his mouth to shout, but the sheer, sociopathic finality in Elias’s deadpan eyes froze the words in his throat. The engineer sweatdropped, his 80s ego colliding with the terrifying realization that this teenager was completely, utterly unmovable.

”Fine,” Harrison spat bitterly, swiveling his chair back to the console. ”Go waste your money in the booth, pretty boy. Let’s hear what you got.”

Elias turned and walked into the vocal isolation booth. He closed the heavy, soundproof glass door, plunging himself into absolute acoustic silence. A high-end Neumann U87 condenser microphone hung suspended in the center of the room, waiting.

Through the double-paned glass, Elias could see Harrison crossing his arms with a mocking sneer, while Paul huddled nervously in the corner.

Elias stepped up to the microphone. He closed his eyes.

This was not just a song. It was the Sonic Virus. It was the intellectual property that would financially decimate the old guard and establish Sovereign Media’s monopoly over the impending Grunge era. To achieve optimal market penetration, the vocal delivery had to bypass the listener’s logic and strike directly at their emotional nervous system.

He mentally engaged the digital loan shark.

[CHA-CHING!]

The biological modification was instantaneous and visceral. Elias felt a profound, burning warmth flood his throat. His vocal cords thickened, tightening and recalibrating at a cellular level, expanding his lung capacity and granting him the raw, devastating acoustic resonance of a seasoned, tormented rock god.

Elias opened his eyes. He nodded at the glass.

Harrison aggressively hit the playback button, rolling the tape.

The haunting, melancholic guitar arpeggio of ”Creep” began to play through Elias’s headphones.

Elias leaned into the Neumann microphone. He didn’t just sing the lyrics; he weaponized them.

”When you were here before...”

The sound that erupted from Elias’s chest was inhumanly magnetic. It was a dark, bruised baritone, vibrating with the raw, agonizing isolation of an outcast, yet laced with the terrifying, ironic confidence of an apex predator mocking his own existence.

In the control room, the reaction was catastrophic.

Harrison’s mocking sneer was instantly wiped from his face as the sheer sonic force of Elias’s voice hit the studio monitors. The engineer physically jumped in his leather chair. The low-end frequencies of Elias’s baritone were so rich, so perfectly compressed by the System’s modification, that the massive glass window separating the booth from the control room actually seemed to vibrate.

”You’re just like an angel... your skin makes me cry...”

Elias’s voice seamlessly shifted from a dark, brooding whisper into a soaring, razor-sharp falsetto that possessed flawless, mathematical pitch. It carried a visceral, agonizing vulnerability that was completely at odds with his violently handsome face. It was the perfect, ultimate juxtaposition.

Paul Rudd stood frozen by the couch, the hair on his arms standing straight up. He had known Elias was a manipulator, a hustler, and a tyrant, but he had never heard him sing. It felt less like a musical performance and more like a biological attack.

Harrison’s hands were hovering over the mixing console, trembling. The engineer’s jaw hung completely slack. He had spent the last decade artificially manufacturing talent through heavy equalization and digital tricks. He was currently witnessing raw, unadulterated, acoustic perfection that required absolutely zero interference.

As the song approached the bridge, Elias gripped the microphone stand, his eyes burning with the weight of thirty-four wasted years from his past life. He unleashed the full, unbridled fury of the Rock God skill.

”She’s running out again... she’s running... run... run...”

The vocal climax hit the control room like a physical shockwave. It was an earth-shattering roar of angst and power, tearing through the studio monitors with such immaculate, visceral distortion that one of the assistant engineers actually dropped his coffee mug on the floor.

The heavy, punishing chords of the instrumental faded out. Elias delivered the final, haunting whisper.

”I don’t belong here.”

Silence crashed down upon the studio.

Elias stood in the booth for exactly three seconds, allowing the tape to capture the natural room decay. Then, he casually cleared his throat, the god-tier resonance instantly vanishing as he deactivated the skill to preserve his capital.

He pushed open the heavy glass door and stepped back into the control room.

Harrison looked like a man who had just witnessed a religious miracle and was deeply terrified of the implications. He stared at Elias, his eyes wide, his breathing shallow. The arrogant 80s producer was completely, intellectually, and musically annihilated.

”One take,” Elias noted smoothly, walking past the stunned engineer. ”I trust the tape machine was functioning properly?”

”I...” Harrison stammered, wiping a thick layer of sweat from his forehead. ”I... yes. Good god, kid. I’ve never heard anything like that in my life. It’s... it’s a monster. That track is a monster.”

Harrison’s arrogance had entirely evaporated, instantly replaced by the greedy, desperate groveling of a music executive smelling millions of dollars. He scrambled out of his chair, abandoning the console.

”Listen, Elias,” Harrison pleaded, his voice dripping with sudden, pathetic desperation. ”Forget the rental fee. I’ll waive the studio time. Let me produce the rest of the album. I have connections at Geffen Records! I can get you a three-album deal by tomorrow morning! We’ll split the publishing, fifty-fifty. I can make you a star!”

Paul Rudd’s eyes widened. A free studio session and a major label connection? It sounded like a dream to a struggling actor.

Elias van Kempen slowly turned around. He looked at Harrison with the detached, clinical disgust of a surgeon examining a tumor.

”I already own one hundred percent of the publishing rights, Harrison,” Elias stated, stepping forward and bringing the aura of Mode CEO Mafia crashing back down upon the room. ”And I would rather set the master tape on fire in your parking lot than surrender fifty percent of my intellectual property to a man who suggested layering a TR-808 drum machine over an acoustic ballad.”

Harrison flinched, retreating a step. ”Come on, kid, be reasonable! You need a studio veteran to navigate the industry! You’re just a model! You don’t know how the business works!”

Elias’s dark eyes swept across the control room. He didn’t just hear the desperation in Harrison’s voice; he utilized the Information Arbitrage he had subtly gathered the moment he walked into the facility.

”I know exactly how the business works, Harrison,” Elias purred, walking slowly toward the massive SSL mixing console. He dragged his finger lightly across the metal casing. ”For instance, I know that independent studios rely heavily on predatory equipment leases to maintain the illusion of operational success.”

Harrison’s eyes went wide.

Elias stopped at the far right corner of the console and tapped a small, weathered barcode sticker partially hidden beneath a stack of track sheets.

”Asset Tag: Audio-Lease Corp, Los Angeles,” Elias read aloud, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute certainty. ”A sixty-four-channel Solid State Logic console carries a retail valuation of roughly four hundred thousand dollars. I noticed the red repossession warning slip peeking out from under your desk calendar when I walked in. You are three months delinquent on your equipment financing, Harrison.”

Harrison’s knees buckled slightly. A massive sweatdrop rolled down his cheek. ”How... you couldn’t possibly...”

”If Audio-Lease Corp repossesses this console, your studio ceases to exist,” Elias diagnosed flawlessly, executing the Rational Extortion. ”You do not have the leverage to offer me a production deal. You are currently begging for survival.”

Elias reached into his pocket and pulled out his sleek leather wallet. He extracted fifteen crisp hundred-dollar bills.

”The standard hourly rate for this room was quoted at seven hundred and fifty dollars, totaling three thousand for the block,” Elias recited, dropping the fifteen hundred dollars onto the console. ”I am applying an immediate, non-negotiable fifty percent discount for the emotional distress I suffered listening to your creative advice.”

Harrison stared at the cash, completely paralyzed by the sheer, unapologetic sociopathy of the teenager in front of him.

”You take this fifteen hundred dollars,” Elias offered the Win-Win Parasite, ”you hand over the two-inch master tape of my performance, and you use this cash to placate your leasing agent for another thirty days. If you attempt to retain my recording, I will personally call Audio-Lease Corp from the lobby payphone and inform them that their collateral is currently sitting unlocked and unattended.”

It wasn’t a threat of violence. It was a flawless, mathematical decapitation.

Harrison looked at the cash. It was exactly enough to cover the minimum late fee on his lease. The kid had him in a legal and financial chokehold. The Old Guard had been completely stripped of its power.

With a shaking hand, Harrison reached out, hit the eject button on the massive tape machine, and pulled the heavy reel of two-inch Ampex tape from the deck. He handed it to Elias like a defeated general surrendering his sword.

”Take it,” Harrison whispered, his voice hoarse.

Elias accepted the heavy tape reel, slipping it smoothly under his arm.

”Pack up the blank cassettes, Paul,” Elias commanded without looking back. ”We have an industry to infect.”

Paul practically scrambled over the couch, grabbing the heavy boxes of un-used tape and sprinting toward the exit, desperate to escape the sheer, terrifying atmosphere of Elias’s business negotiations.

As Elias walked out into the blinding California sun, the master tape of ”Creep” secured safely under his arm, the system chimed its final, glorious approval.
