Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Pulp Fiction Soundtrack Hack

The third week of October 1993 brought a dry, aggressive Santa Ana wind that whipped through the towering steel-and-glass canyons of Los Angeles. But inside the hyper-air-conditioned executive suites of MCA Records, the climate was one of sterile, impenetrable corporate arrogance.

Elias van Kempen sat perfectly still in a plush leather guest chair, his long legs crossed with aristocratic grace. He wore a sharp, charcoal-grey tailored vest over a crisp white shirt, the sleeves rolled up to expose his vintage Rolex Daytona. His dark, striking eyes were locked onto the man sitting across the massive mahogany desk.

Paul Rudd stood nervously behind Elias, clutching a Sovereign Media clipboard to his chest like a ballistic shield, his knuckles white.

Sitting behind the desk, radiating the bloated, unearned confidence of a mid-level gatekeeper, was Gary. He was a Senior Distribution Executive at MCA, wearing a shiny silk tie and a smirk that suggested he had spent the entire morning rejecting desperate musicians.

Gary leaned back, lacing his fingers over his stomach, and let out a loud, patronizing laugh that echoed off the platinum records lining his walls.

”I gotta hand it to you, van Kempen. You’ve got guts,” Gary chuckled, shaking his head. ”I read the trades. I know you hustled your way into a three-percent backend on Pulp Fiction. I know you hijacked the fashion market with those jackets. But you’re sitting in the wrong building, kid. This is MCA Records. We don’t negotiate with teenage walk-ons.”

”I am not a walk-on, Gary. I am a primary stakeholder,” Elias replied, his baritone voice a smooth, cold rumble that refused to rise to the executive’s bait. ”The soundtrack for Pulp Fiction is a curated masterpiece of 1970s soul and surf rock. It will define the auditory landscape of the decade. I require a fifteen percent equity stake in the gross album sales, as Sovereign Media’s presence in the film acts as a direct, un-invoiced marketing anchor for your youth demographic.”

Gary snorted, tossing a pen onto his desk. ”Your presence? Kid, you have three lines in a diner. You’re a glorified cameo. We already locked the global distribution contract with Miramax. Harvey Weinstein signed the paperwork yesterday. MCA owns the Pulp Fiction soundtrack one hundred percent. You aren’t getting a dime off the physical retail.”

Gary leaned forward, attempting to physically intimidate the teenager. ”You think because you beat Tommy Mottola by selling clothes, you can bully MCA? We own the pressing plants. We own the trucks. We own the pipeline. Go sell your leather jackets, kid. The adults are printing the records.”

Paul let out a small, tragic whimper. ”Elias, he’s right. The contract is locked. We have no leverage. Let’s just go back to the warehouse.”

Elias did not flinch. He did not blush. He did not raise his voice to argue about artistic merit.

An unbreachable contract was merely a puzzle that required a different angle of attack. If the front door was locked, a true capitalist simply purchased the pavement leading up to it.

Elias’s eyes drifted from Gary’s smug face to the clutter of paperwork spread across the executive’s desk. He spotted a thick stack of logistical manifests detailing the upcoming nationwide shipping routes for the highly anticipated album.

He mentally engaged the digital loan shark resting in his cerebral cortex.

[CHA-CHING!]

The world around Elias instantly shifted. A translucent, radioactive-red grid snapped over the desk, slicing through the thick manila folders and decrypting the dense, bureaucratic lease agreements and shipping routes for MCA’s primary West Coast distribution warehouse in the San Fernando Valley.

The system’s forensic algorithms ripped through the municipal data, searching for a logistical blind spot.

A block of blinding, neon-red text scrolled rapidly down Elias’s field of vision.

Elias’s eyes darkened into absolute, terrifying voids of pure, unadulterated capitalist joy. The red grid vanished.

He didn’t need to argue with Gary. Gary had just unknowingly provided him with the blueprint to a multi-million-dollar guillotine.

Elias stood up slowly, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt with impeccable, aristocratic grace. He offered the executive a dark, flawless smile of profound, chilling pity.

”You own the pressing plants, Gary. You own the trucks. You own the pipeline,” Elias recited smoothly, his voice dropping to a silken whisper. ”But an entire ocean of water is utterly useless if a pebble blocks the faucet. Have a highly productive afternoon.”

Elias turned on his heel and strode out of the office, his posture radiating overwhelming dominance. Paul scrambled after him, deeply confused and entirely terrified.

”Elias, where are we going?!” Paul asked as they hit the blistering heat of the sidewalk. ”Did we just give up? That’s not like you! Usually, you threaten to audit their offshore accounts or something!”

”We are not giving up, Paul,” Elias said, opening the door of the rusted 1984 Honda Civic. ”We are going to the Los Angeles County Tax Assessor’s office. I need to buy a pebble.”

Two hours later, Paul Rudd was leaning against a beige, fluorescent-lit wall in a depressing municipal government building, hyperventilating into a paper bag.

He watched in absolute, paralyzed horror as Elias stood at a teller window, calmly pulling banded stacks of hundred-dollar bills from his leather jacket.

”Elias,” Paul gasped, dropping the paper bag. ”Elias, please tell me I am hallucinating. Please tell me you did not just hand a county clerk twenty-five thousand dollars in raw, liquid cash.”

”It is a public tax auction, Paul. The county requires immediate, cleared funds for the transfer of a delinquent deed,” Elias murmured, signing a heavy, watermarked certificate with his silver fountain pen.

Deep within Elias’s mind, the system silently registered the massive capital expenditure.

Elias ignored the phantom sting in his ledger. He picked up the certificate of ownership.

”But you bought nothing!” Paul shrieked, earning irritated glares from the municipal workers. ”I saw the map, Elias! It’s a piece of asphalt! It’s one and a half meters wide! You can’t build a house on it! You can’t build a kiosk on it! You just spent twenty-five thousand dollars of our hard-earned commercial revenue to buy a literal crack in the pavement!”

”I did not buy a crack in the pavement, Paul,” Elias smiled, his dark eyes gleaming with absolute, sociopathic foresight as he folded the deed. ”I bought a toll booth.”

Seventy-two hours later, the day of the national retail shipment for the Pulp Fiction soundtrack had arrived.

The sun was just beginning to rise over the industrial sprawl of the San Fernando Valley. The massive MCA Records distribution warehouse was buzzing with frantic energy. Inside, millions of dollars worth of cassettes and CDs were loaded onto a fleet of ten massive, eighteen-wheeler freight trucks, ready to flood the West Coast retail market.

The lead truck’s engine roared to life. The heavy metal rolling gates of the warehouse opened. The driver engaged the air brakes and slowly rolled toward the exit, preparing to turn onto the public street.

The driver slammed on his brakes so hard the massive truck violently shuddered, the tires screeching against the concrete.

Blocking the exit—standing exactly one inch past the MCA property line, directly across the narrow 1.5-meter strip of asphalt connecting the warehouse to the street—was a makeshift barrier.

It was a flimsy, knee-high section of cheap chicken wire held up by two rusted metal poles.

Sitting directly behind the chicken wire, lounging in a twenty-dollar folding canvas chair, was Elias van Kempen.

He was wearing his vintage leather jacket, sipping a cup of black coffee, reading the morning edition of the Wall Street Journal.

Flanking him on identical folding chairs were Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson. They were both wearing neon-orange traffic safety vests. Paul was clutching a large, hastily painted cardboard sign that read: PRIVATE PROPERTY. NO TRESPASSING. VIOLATORS WILL BE PROSECUTED.

”Elias,” Paul whimpered, his teeth chattering despite the morning warmth. He stared up at the massive chrome grille of the eighteen-wheeler idling just three feet away. ”That truck weighs forty tons. If his foot slips off the clutch, I am going to be flattened into a meat pancake. I will be permanently embedded in the asphalt.”

”The driver is a union employee, Paul. He is not going to commit vehicular manslaughter to save a corporate shipping schedule,” Elias noted smoothly, turning a page of his newspaper.

[DEDUCTING -$100.00 USD FOR FOLDING CHAIRS AND MAKESHIFT FENCING LOGISTICS.]

Owen took a slow sip of a green juice, looking entirely relaxed. ”It’s a very surreal vibe, man. We’re like, modern-day trolls guarding a bridge. But instead of a bridge, it’s a driveway. And instead of riddles, we’re armed with real estate law.”

The truck driver laid on the horn—a deafening, apocalyptic blast that shook the ground. Elias didn’t flinch. He simply took another sip of coffee.

Within ten minutes, the entire MCA distribution hub had descended into absolute, gridlocked chaos. Because the lead truck was blocked, the other nine trucks were trapped behind it in the narrow loading bay. Nobody could move. The millions of dollars in inventory were paralyzed.

A sleek black town car tore into the lot, screeching to a halt near the gate.

Gary, the arrogant MCA executive from the office, practically threw himself out of the car. His face was a terrifying shade of crimson. Trailing right behind him were two uniformed LAPD officers he had flagged down on his way.

”What the hell is this?!” Gary roared, sprinting toward the barricade. He pointed a trembling finger at Elias. ”Van Kempen! Have you lost your damn mind?! You’re blocking a commercial exit! Officers, arrest this kid! He’s trespassing and restricting interstate commerce!”

The two LAPD officers approached, their hands resting cautiously near their utility belts. They looked at the teenager sitting in the folding chair, then at the massive truck.

”Alright, kid, fun’s over,” the lead officer said gruffly. ”You can’t block a commercial driveway. Pack up the chairs and clear the lane, or I’m taking you downtown for public nuisance.”

Paul practically burst into tears, dropping his cardboard sign. ”I knew it! I knew we were going to jail! Put your hands behind your back, Owen!”

Elias van Kempen did not stand up. He did not raise his voice. He slipped seamlessly into his Legal Chokehold protocol, projecting the unyielding, suffocating gravity of a man who knew the law better than the men paid to enforce it.

”Officer,” Elias murmured, his baritone voice a smooth, icy calm that completely neutralized the aggressive energy of the cops. ”I am not blocking a commercial driveway. I am sitting on my own private property.”

Elias casually reached into the inner pocket of his leather jacket. He pulled out the heavily watermarked, officially stamped Los Angeles County Deed of Ownership. He handed it to the officer.

”As you can see by the municipal surveyor’s coordinates,” Elias dictated flawlessly, pointing to the asphalt beneath his chair, ”this one-point-five-meter strip of land does not belong to MCA Records, nor does it belong to the city. I purchased this parcel at a county tax auction three days ago. It is legally zoned as a private, commercial lot.”

The officer frowned, taking the document. He read the county seal, checked the coordinates against the street signs, and his brow furrowed in deep, bureaucratic realization.

Elias leveled his dark, mesmerizing eyes at the police officers.

”If that truck moves forward a single inch, it is officially trespassing on Sovereign Media property,” Elias stated, delivering the killing blow. ”And if you attempt to forcibly remove me from land that I legally own, I will have my attorneys file a massive civil rights lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department before noon. This is not a criminal matter, gentlemen. This is a civil real estate dispute. You do not have jurisdiction here.”

The lead officer stared at the deed, then looked at Gary. The cop sighed heavily, handing the paper back to Elias. The LAPD dealt with gangs and robberies; they wanted absolutely nothing to do with a lawsuit-happy billionaire squabbling over a property line.

”He’s right,” the officer grunted, turning to the furious MCA executive. ”The deed is verified. He owns the strip. We can’t move him, sir. If his property blocks your trucks, you’re going to have to take it up in civil court.”

”Civil court?!” Gary shrieked, his voice cracking into a hysterical pitch. ”My trucks have to be at the retail hubs in three hours! If we don’t deliver today, we miss the entire national release window! We’ll lose millions! You have to move him!”

”Take it to a judge, buddy,” the officer shrugged, walking back toward his cruiser. ”Have a nice day.”

The police drove away, leaving Gary utterly abandoned.

Gary stared at the departing cruiser, then slowly turned to look at Elias. The arrogant, untouchable studio executive was hyperventilating. A massive, comical sweatdrop rolled down his temple. His mind desperately tried to process the fact that a sixteen-year-old boy had just legally paralyzed a multinational corporation using a piece of asphalt.

”You... you bought the driveway,” Gary choked out, his knees actually shaking. ”You spent twenty-five grand on a piece of dirt just to trap me.”

”I told you, Gary,” Elias smiled. It was a dark, breathtakingly ruthless expression of pure capitalist dominance. ”An ocean of water is useless if a pebble blocks the faucet. And right now, I own the pebble.”

Elias stood up from his folding chair, his towering frame casting a long shadow over the sweating executive.

”The retail deadlines are approaching, Gary,” Elias whispered smoothly, executing the Win-Win Parasite. ”If those trucks don’t move, you lose the release window. The album charts at zero. The studio loses its investment, and you lose your career.”

Elias reached into his pocket and pulled out a single sheet of paper. He slid it onto the hood of Gary’s town car.

”I am a reasonable landlord,” Elias purred. ”I am willing to grant MCA Records a permanent ’Distribution Right-of-Way’ easement across my property. Your trucks may pass freely, forever.”

Gary stared at the paper. ”What... what’s the toll?”

”Fifteen percent,” Elias dictated, his voice cold iron. ”Sovereign Media receives fifteen percent of the gross, global distribution royalties from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack album. In perpetuity.”

”Fifteen percent of the gross?!” Gary screamed, clutching his head. ”For driving across five feet of asphalt?! That’s extortion! That’s a mafia shakedown!”

”It is real estate capitalism,” Elias corrected flawlessly. He looked at his vintage Rolex. ”You have sixty seconds to sign the toll agreement, Gary. After that, I am setting up a tent, and my associates and I are going to have a picnic on my property. Your trucks can wait until Monday.”

Gary looked at the idling eighteen-wheelers. He looked at the furious, stressed-out drivers. He looked at the teenager whose dark, unblinking eyes promised absolute financial ruin. The math was inescapable. Losing 15% of the soundtrack was a bitter pill, but failing to distribute the soundtrack entirely would mean he’d be clearing out his desk by the afternoon.

With a tragic, pathetic groan of a man whose corporate soul had just been violently amputated, Gary pulled a pen from his jacket.

He leaned over the hood of his town car and violently scrawled his signature across Elias’s contract, legally binding MCA Records to the most predatory toll fee in Hollywood history.

”Take it,” Gary hissed, shoving the paper into Elias’s chest, tears of sheer frustration in his eyes. ”You are a parasite. You are a bloodsucking parasite.”

”I am a proprietor, Gary,” Elias murmured politely, taking the contract and inspecting the ink. ”You may proceed. Safe travels.”

Elias gestured to Paul and Owen. The two terrified assistants scrambled to grab the folding chairs and the chicken wire, dragging the makeshift barricade out of the way.

The heavy diesel engines of the trucks roared as they finally lurched forward, rolling over Elias’s $25,000 piece of asphalt to deliver millions of dollars in merchandise to the world.

As the exhaust fumes cleared, the digital loan shark inside Elias’s cerebral cortex erupted in a glorious, deafening symphony of pure, golden triumph.

Elias felt the surge of CP restock his arsenal, his balance settling at a formidable 370 points.

The daily maintenance fee cycled through with quiet, mechanical indifference.

Elias folded the contract and slipped it into his jacket. His liquid cash had taken a massive hit, dropping to $494,600.00, but he didn’t care. He had just legally attached himself like a leech to one of the biggest cultural phenomena of the 1990s. Every time someone bought the Pulp Fiction soundtrack anywhere on Earth, they would be paying a toll to cross Elias van Kempen’s five feet of asphalt.

”Come along, gentlemen,” Elias commanded, walking toward the rusted Honda Civic. ”The music industry has paid its toll. It is time to check on the cinematic front.”
