Chapter 1176: Chapter 731: Holding the Line for 12 Hours

Li Yu took off his helmet. With the temperature rising, wearing a sealed helmet was quite stuffy.

But he had to be careful. The enemy had guns, and if he wasn’t careful and got shot in the head, it would be over for him.

After setting the helmet down, he fished around in his pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes, shaking one out.

He patted his pockets left and right, didn’t find a lighter, so he lit it on a burning tree.

He took a deep drag, exhaling a satisfied smoke ring.

With a rifle slung across his back, a helmet cradled in his left arm, and a cigarette in his right hand, he walked through the orchard.

Dozens of cars with all their lights on illuminated the orchard.

Li Yu wasn’t worried. Whether it was Third Uncle or Ju Tianrui, or even Luo and Old Bi, they all had the ability to lead and manage independently.

He was confident in leaving the defensive setup to them.

At this moment, Third Uncle, accompanied by Luo, suddenly approached and said to Li Yu, ”Xiao Yu, this orchard is too large, dozens of acres. The walls aren’t high, and the whole layout is rectangular. I was just discussing with Xiao Luo, and with our two hundred men, it’s hard to defend. Even if we manage to hold out, it would be quite exhausting.

So we’re thinking to abandon the western side and split the orchard into quarters, defending only the front quarter.

The Western Alliance folks have dozens of vehicles; we can push those vehicles to the middle to serve as barricades.

In short, concentrate our forces.”

Li Yu didn’t hesitate and said, ”Alright, the western side is close to the woods, most zombies come along the concrete road, and there are fewer zombies on the western side. That works. But Luo, later, park the loader at the gate. Forget about the gate, if there are too many zombies, the loader can roll out and crush them.”

”Okay.” Hearing Li Yu assign him this task, Luo immediately got up and ran off to make arrangements.

No one bothered with the corpses, there was no time to deal with them.

Now, all their vehicles were parked around the wall. Since they wouldn’t have to defend more than five acres, they could concentrate their forces, with vehicles placed alongside the two-meter-tall walls. Most of their vehicles stood taller than two meters.

Hence, they could stand on the vehicles to combat the zombies when the time came.

They brought ten mortars, with a total of six hundred shells.

Additionally, Li Yu brought out a decisive item from the Big Camphor Tree Base to use when things got tricky, potentially reducing their burden.

Luo and others rushed busily back and forth in the orchard.

Cars were parked, spears were prepared, magazines were ready, everything was in chaotic order.

Li Yu returned to the Unimog, watching from a distance as Dapao maneuvered the massive loader into the position at the gate.

He climbed onto the Unimog’s roof, where a heavy machine gun was set up in the center.

Sitting beside the machine gun, he rummaged through his pocket, finding an ancient electronic device.

This thing was tiny, about the size of two thumbs—a MP3 player.

Plugging in the earphones, Li Yu put them in his ears.

He pressed the play button, and a surge of electronic music erupted.

The exciting and unrestrained music filled Li Yu’s heart with calm.

Seated atop the towering Unimog, he was near a decayed corpse with only a head remaining, eyes wide open.

Sitting on the vehicle’s roof, he could overlook the entire orchard.

Many fruit trees had fallen, and the ones still standing were ablaze, crackling amid the car lights as people came and went.

Not far from him, within twenty meters of the gate, sat Third Uncle.

He sat atop a car, quickly eating.

To the south was Ju Tianrui, who arranged his weapons nearby after parking, ready for immediate use.

Lao Yi managed the defenses up north.

Yang Tianlong was on the western side; his pressure wasn’t heavy. Logically, that side should have the fewest zombies.

The main direction at the front gate was led by Third Uncle, with Old Bi ready to mobilize a team for support from any of the four sides as needed.

Luo operated the mortars and armored vehicles, awaiting orders and ready to assist in any direction.

Li Tie and Li Gang controlled two drones a few miles away, monitoring the zombie presence and continually reporting their progress.

As time passed, a few zombies appeared outside the walls.

The numbers weren’t large, just over twenty.

These zombies were probably nearby to begin with; considering their walking speed at night, traversing seven to eight kilometers would take at least two to three hours.

But if it were a stormy night, the time would halve.

It was now half past seven in the evening.

The zombies appeared four kilometers away.

It was expected they’d need at least another hour to reach here.

After over an hour of frantic preparations, they finally sealed off the wall, and Gan Hu’s vehicles served as a barricade against zombies coming from the west.

They began consuming their portable meals.

There was a good chance they’d be fighting nonstop for twelve hours tonight. Without replenishing their energy, they wouldn’t withstand the high-intensity combat ahead.

In the orchard, the fruit trees had mostly burned down, leaving only blackened, charred wood.

Li Yu took off his headphones, got out of the vehicle, and went to the loader at the gate to find Dapao.

”Dapao, when the zombies come, this vehicle will be crucial. If there are too many zombies, take it out and clear them,” Li Yu said, watching Dapao quickly eat.

Dapao nodded, ”No problem, just let me know when to go out.”

”Alright.” Li Yu glanced at Ahong and others inside the vehicle, nodded at them, and told them to eat well.

Then he left the loader.

He patrolled around the orchard, checking the defensive setup.

Actually, without rain, zombies wouldn’t stack up, so the situation was somewhat optimistic.

The hope was that it wouldn’t rain that night.

If it did rain, over time, the zombies’ sensitivity would increase, and once they stacked, it would be troublesome.

Time ticked by minute by minute.

Soon, it was eight thirty.

Li Tie twisted open a bottle with one hand while controlling a drone with the other, saying to Li Yu, ”Bro, the Zombie Tide is less than a kilometer away now, expected arrival in fifteen minutes.”

Li Yu nodded, then brought out a crossbow from the base.

The crossbow’s arrows, of which there were many at the base, had been brought out in abundance this time.

He nocked an arrow, aiming at a zombie outside the wall.

Whoosh—

The arrow shot straight into the head of a zombie.

Thud!

The zombie fell.

The surrounding zombies swarmed over.

The number of zombies outside the wall had grown to hundreds.

But these zombies only reached up, continually roaring at those standing on the vehicles behind the wall.

Outside the wall, a few scattered zombies lay fallen, their bodies surrounded by other zombies feasting on their remains.

”Gangzi, you informed Second Uncle, right? The Western Alliance has been handled,” Li Yu said, putting down the crossbow and speaking to Li Gang beside him.

Li Gang nodded, ”I’ve already told Second Uncle. He said since we’re not going back, we must be careful tonight.”

”Alright,” Li Yu replied.

The car lights were dismantled and placed on top of the vehicles to illuminate outside the wall.

Li Yu squinted, looking at the concrete road through the woods.

He took out a walkie-talkie to announce, ”Attention everyone, zombies are coming!”

Their strategy was to resist zombies while ensuring safety.

The goal wasn’t to kill zombies, but merely to endure the night.

The number of zombies from Gan City was too large; they wouldn’t be able to kill them all in one night.

Moreover, killing these zombies consumed too many bullets.

Even though the base could produce bullets autonomously now, they weren’t to be squandered thoughtlessly.

Li Yu had considered using drones to lure these zombies away, but their numbers here were too many, and the grounds were covered in blood from past battles.

The bloody scent couldn’t be masked.

Compared to the drones, the orchard was certainly more enticing to the zombies.
