Chapter 749: Chapter 581: People and Animals in Acid Rain

August 21st.

Juzi Island head.

The acid rain was drizzling down.

If the night is an invisible, intangible devil, then the Zombies are the devils before our eyes, visible and tangible.

Ever since the volcanic eruption, it only took a few days before the Zombies began to arrive.

The refugee camp in South District still lacked any human voices.

And the situation in North District wasn’t much better.

Old Sun had been bitten by a Zombie the previous night due to consecutive days of battling with Zombies, compounded with severe lack of sleep, resulting in a moment’s carelessness.

Without any hesitation, Hai Chao directly pushed him into the midst of the Zombie Tide, where he was devoured.

These days, the Zombies that were killed and whose skulls were pierced would fall and be torn and devoured by surrounding Zombies.

A team of over three hundred had dwindled to just two hundred thirty after three days and nights of fighting Zombies.

And the East Wall was almost breached by the Zombies at one point.

In the end, it was their firearms that forcibly reclaimed it.

Now everyone’s physical strength had reached a critical point, everyone had panda eyes, looking hollowed out, neither human nor ghost.

Hai Chao, listless, carried a spear and walked straight into the central house’s hall in North District.

He was drenched by the acid rain, his wet clothes clinging to his skin.

The rainwater, drawn by gravity, fell onto the floor.

The floor was damp, covered with rainwater dripping off people coming and going.

He entered the hall, then sat down with a thump.

The wrinkles in his clothes made an unpleasant squelching sound as he sat down.

Gan Shang was equally weary. Facing the walls that could be breached at any moment, he too couldn’t sleep.

Standing in the central house, he watched over the walls, arranging for reinforcements whenever a section was in particular danger.

Always tense, coordinating the defense.

Hai Chao took out some dry rations, leaned against the wall by the entrance of the hall, his eyes lifeless, seemingly devoid of vitality.

Crunch, crunch—

Hai Chao chewed his dry rations, bits sticking to his mouth; he numbly stuffed the crumbs into his mouth.

His hands, after being in the rain for an extended period, were slightly swollen, white, and peeling.

Hiss—

A sore on the base of his thumb accidentally let some rainwater in, causing him to suck in a breath from the pain.

The acid rain was causing various problems for their bodies.

Many had started to develop red spots that were itchy and painful, but they dared not scratch, fearing the next outing in acid rain would be far more unbearable if the skin broke.

This bout of acid rain had left them in a sorry state.

Although they had raincoats, they had to battle Zombies outside constantly, and the rain would always find its way underneath.

The plastic raincoats often hindered their movements.

Eventually, many simply stopped wearing the raincoats, choosing to counterattack the Zombies in the acid rain.

Tat tat tat—

Gan Shang walked towards Hai Chao and handed him a cup of water.

”Just distilled. Have some,” Gan Shang said, squatting down by Hai Chao.

His hair was disheveled, lacking the usual decorum.

”Thanks, boss,” Hai Chao took the water, which was still warm.

He took a couple of gulps and drank half of it.

Then, he added, ”Boss, some good news. The rain these past few days has started raising the river’s water level. Doesn’t look like it’ll take long before it rises above two meters, and it will be much easier to defend against the Zombies then.”

Gan Shang nodded, responding to Hai Chao, ”Just our luck, acid rain and now the groundwater reeks of sulfuric acid. Tell everyone to hang in there a little longer; once the river level rises, we’ll have an easier time.”

”Also, later you need to check on the diesel generator. I heard from Duan Mei that one broke down, see if it can still be repaired.”

Hai Chao exhaled slowly, emitting a faint mist.

Along with the descending acid rain, the temperature was also dropping.

It was twenty-five degrees the day before yesterday, and now it had fallen into the teens.

And with more rain, going out to fight Zombies was pure torture.

”Alright, I’ll find someone to go check it out soon,” he finished and shivered, shaking his whole body.

Seeing him like that, Gan Shang couldn’t help saying, ”When your men come back inside from the rain, let them change into dry clothes. Don’t try to save effort, with this crappy weather, catching a cold could be disastrous.”

Hai Chao was touched, feeling a surge of warmth in his heart that dispelled the cold upon hearing the boss’s concern.

East Wall.

Puchi—

Duan Mei, holding a spear, stood inside the barricade and shoved it through the skull of a Zombie that had just emerged.

The skewered Zombie rolled down the small Zombie hill.

Instantly, the Zombies below started tearing into the deceased one.

The water outside the barricade was slowly rising. As long as it climbed higher than three or four meters, it would become difficult for Zombies to pile up, and the current should wash them away.

Then, their job would be much easier.

”Duan Mei, what’s wrong with your eyes?”

”Hm?” Duan Mei looked perplexedly at Jiu Zhi. His eyes? What was wrong with them?

But he didn’t have time to check on his own eyes as he jabbed down with another spear thrust.
