Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 858: Chapter 858: On the Right Track

Jiang Xinyu laughed, ”Alright, it’s a total of 270 pounds. I’ll keep 100 pounds at home, leave 50 pounds for friends, if the village head’s sister-in-law wants 10 pounds, there will be 110 pounds left. Mr. Wu, how much do you want?”

Wu Jiucheng felt a bit embarrassed, ”Xiao Jiang, how much is this cotton per pound?”

”Two yuan a pound.”

The two were stunned; even buying from the supply and marketing cooperative wasn’t this price, and they required coupons, too.

”Xiao Jiang, we know we’re getting a bargain here. We’ll remember this. I’m not sure exactly how much we need, I’ll let your aunt come to your house later.”

”Okay, just don’t come too late, there must be a lot of people buying cotton.”

Jiang Xinyu hinted to them, one was to tell them not to be too late, and the other was to advise them not to buy too much to avoid conflicts with others in the village.

Wu Jiucheng nodded, ”Your aunt will come over in a little while.”

The two elders hurriedly returned home with their rolls of cotton.

As soon as Wu Jiucheng reached the house, he called out, ”Xiao Zhen, Xiao Zhen.”

”I’m here, what’s the hurry?”

”Little Jiang’s cotton has been fluffed out, it’s two yuan a pound. I just talked to her, you better calculate how much we lack and quickly go to her house to buy. Otherwise, it might be all gone.”

Wu Xiaoping came over, ”Let’s not buy too much, or people in the village might not be happy.”

Xie Chunfen also nodded. It’s unnecessary to offend people over such small matters. They just want a peaceful life now.

”Let’s add a pound for each of our cotton-padded clothes, and leave the bedding as it is.” Wu Jiucheng said and sighed.

”Alright, I’ll buy ten pounds, and the rest will be used to make gloves for you. It’s too cold here.”

Cai Xiaozhen sighed too, although she was the one who disliked sighing the most. Her grandmother had once said that sighing would dissipate all good fortune.

But ever since the incident, she had sighed more often than in all the previous decades combined.

”Then go now.”

”Okay, let’s go together, sisters, let’s also get to know Xiao Jiang.”

The other two had no objections, and after a simple tidying up, the three of them went to find Jiang Xinyu.

When Jiang Xinyu got home, she saw several women in the courtyard.

She greeted them with a smile, knowing they were here to buy cotton.

”Xiao Jiang, the village head’s sister-in-law has gone to borrow a scale, she’ll be back soon.”

”Alright, sisters, do come inside and sit.”

”No, Teacher Jiang, you should rest.”

The villagers respected Jiang Xinyu greatly, even more than Wei Kaiyun, perhaps because she was a teacher.

Jiang Xinyu went inside and brought out a small stool from the house, inviting them to sit down.

She also brought out a basket of cooked chestnuts and sat down with them.

”Teacher Jiang, do you have any of these cotton seeds at home? I’m thinking of planting some in the private plot tomorrow; the kids are growing up, and I need to start keeping cotton for them.”

”No, yesterday when the cotton was fluffed, it was taken away by the captain directly.”

”Sigh, once it’s with the captain, it’s hard to get it back,” the woman sighed.

”Next year, our village will surely plant cotton on a large scale.”

”I just want to plant a little in the private plot, it would be convenient to use.”

As they were chatting, Qu Xiaoli came over with the communal balance scale.

”Sister-in-law, I don’t know about weights, so I’ll leave it to you.”

”Alright, quickly report how much you each need?”

Du Fengying brought out two bags from the storeroom and placed them on the ground.

”Xiao Li, give me three pounds.”

”Alright, Auntie.”

She opened the sack, and everyone huddled around to take a look, all exclaiming in surprise.

”This cotton is so good, pure white and fluffy, the fibers look great, it must be warm.”

Du Fengying took out two rolls of cotton, and Qu Xiaoli weighed them, ”Auntie, these two rolls are two pounds eight ounces, not quite three pounds.”

”Then give me three rolls of cotton.”

Jiang Xinyu also came over to look at the cotton, and it was indeed nice, not much different than what they had ordered.

Qu Xiaoli weighed the three rolls, which came out to four pounds two ounces, ”Auntie, four pounds two ounces is eight yuan and twenty cents.”

”Alright, Xiao Li, put them in a bag for Auntie.”

With that, she pulled out a handkerchief wrap and counted out eight yuan and twenty cents, handing it to Jiang Xinyu.

”Teacher Jiang, count it.”

”Auntie, there’s no mistake.”

Just then, Cai Xiaozhen and her two companions also walked into the courtyard.

”You ladies, please sit.”

”Xiao Jiang is really a beautiful girl.”

Jiang Xinyu laughed, ”Auntie, I’m already a mother of three kids, can’t be called a beautiful girl. Please sit down quickly.

Mr. Wu just told me how much you need?”

Cai Xiaozhen spoke up, ”Xiao Jiang, each of us eight wants an extra pound of cotton for our clothes, and buy two more pounds to make a pair of gloves for them.”

”Alright, I’ll weigh it out for you ladies in a moment. Don’t worry, there’s enough.”

Because everyone saw how good the cotton was, they all wanted more, so Du Fengying brought out two more bags of cotton from the house.

These few people bought thirty pounds, and after they left, Qu Xiaoli weighed out twelve pounds for Cai Xiaozhen and her companions.

”Thank you, Xiao Jiang,” Cai Xiaozhen gave her twenty-four yuan. The three left with their bags.

”Sister-in-law, quickly keep aside what you need, otherwise, it might run out later.”

”Yes, I should set aside what I need.”

Du Fengying leaned in close to Jiang Xinyu and whispered, ”Xiao Jiang, what I took out earlier is all second-grade.”

”Give sister-in-law the first-grade.”

”Okay, got it.”

Qu Xiaoli also wanted twelve pounds, and she handed Jiang Xinyu twenty-four yuan.

Jiang Xinyu didn’t refuse because it’s not good to be too generous with these kinds of things. There’s a saying that goes, ’Once you’ve tasted something sweet, you’ll keep chasing it.’ If something’s not quite right in the future, the other party won’t accept it.

At this time, the children woke up. Jiang Xinyu smiled and went inside the house.

She fed the two little ones and felt that the little girl hadn’t had enough. She touched her belly and got up to make her a bottle of milk, though it was only thirty milliliters.

The little girl still finished it all. ”Why didn’t you tell me you’re not full? Wouldn’t I let you eat your fill?”

The little girl looked at Jiang Xinyu with big round eyes.

Shi Xian was so domineering and always had to be fed first. Lately, his appetite has grown, and one serving isn’t enough for him. It seems they’ll need to supplement with some milk formula in the future.

After feeding the two little ones, she didn’t plan to go out. There should be a lot of people coming outside.

There’s no point going out herself. It’s better to stay with the two kids. Shi Xian could make sounds now. He kept saying ’oh oh oh,’ and it was hard to tell what he meant.

Anyway, he wouldn’t be hungry anymore, as he was always fed first.

The little girl just turned her head to look at her brother flailing his limbs next to her. Her activity level was quite low, and the difference between boys and girls was noticeable even at this stage. It’s especially obvious in movement.
