NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest

Marisa remained seated, dark wrap drawn close, eyes already turning back toward the eastern approaches as if the visions were once again moving behind them.

”Do not take too long to decide which future you are actually willing to stand in, barbarian. The sky does not care about your hesitation.”

Kane left her on the terrace and walked back toward the guarded quarters where Kessa and Griselda would already be rising.

The greetings continued as he passed: nods, short acknowledgments, the new weight of a reputation forged in blood and divine-adjacent light. He had the opening. 𝘧𝓇ℯℴ𝓂

He had the seat at the table.

What he did not yet have was certainty that the woman who had guided him to both was steering him toward survival or simply toward the throne she had always intended to claim over her brother’s corpse.

The first session of the coalition talks was awaited.

Five days passed after that.

The coalition talks moved with a speed and clarity Kane had not expected.

Each morning the same upper hall filled with the same banners and the same hard-eyed representatives.

Each session Grathak sat on the raised throne and spoke in the same blunt, almost reasonable tone that had first unsettled Kane after the Measures.

The offers themselves were clean on the surface.

Berakamon would commit fighting strength to any coordinated stand against the coming devils.

Trade routes to Menual would open under formal protection, food, steel, information, and the movement of people without the usual raids.

Warriors trained in the deeper packs would be made available when Kane faced the next threats, provided the alliance held.

The final condition was spoken without shame or ornament: if Kane formalized a family bond through Kessa, the full weight of the empire’s military support would lock into place.

No more temporary recognition.

Permanent.

Kessa had taken the news with a short laugh and a look that said she already considered the matter settled in everything but name.

Griselda had listened in silence and later noted that the terms were better than any vision-seer had predicted.

Marisa had said almost nothing in the public sessions.

Her eyes watched her brother with the same unreadable calculation Kane had come to distrust.

By the afternoon of the fifth day, the outline of an agreement existed on the table.

It was, as Kane kept thinking, too easy.

Grathak had not once demanded breeding rights, hostages, or the kind of open subjugation the pure-blood faction still muttered about in the corridors.

He had simply named terms that looked like the practical decisions of a ruler who had finally accepted the sixty-day window as real.

Kane left the hall early that day, claiming the need to walk the residual stiffness from the Guardian’s wounds.

The greetings he received in the outer corridors and terraces were still respectful, still edged with the memory of the Measures.

He used the cover of that respect to move deeper into the palace than formal guest paths usually allowed.

He had learned the routes from listening, from watching which doors the senior attendants used when they thought no outsider was paying attention, and from the simple fact that an empire built on strength rarely bothered to hide its ugliest work behind complex locks.

The underground levels were the same ones he had walked with Marisa before the first meeting.

The air grew warmer with thick, familiar mix of sweat, fear, and old blood rose to meet him.

Distant sounds drifted through the stone: chains, low voices, the occasional sharp cry that cut off too quickly.

Kane followed the strongest concentration of those sounds.

The corridor opened into a wide, torch-lit chamber that had been expanded since his earlier passage.

Iron cages lined two walls. Inside them, elves and humans,, some recently taken, some clearly held for longer, stood or sat in various states of exhaustion and defiance.

In the center of the floor, a raised stone platform held three more captives secured to heavy rings.

Dark, viscous fluid that carried the same wrong heat Kane had felt near the southern mutants sat in open basins around the platform.

The scent of it was unmistakable: concentrated demon essence, thicker and more deliberate than anything that had leaked into the deep forest on its own.

Grathak stood over the platform.

He wasn’t in the middle of casual use this time.

He was directing.

Two senior beast handlers moved according to his low instructions, applying measured amounts of the dark fluid to the skin and open cuts of the restrained captives.

”GHAAAAA!”

The reactions were immediate and ugly: convulsions, raw sounds of pain, the first visible signs of the same corruption that had twisted ordinary beasts into the variants Kane had already killed.

One of the elves began to change even as Kane watched: veins darkening, muscles knotting in unnatural patterns, eyes flooding with the same sickly light he had seen in the manifestation’s wounds.

Kane stepped fully into the light of the chamber.

Several of the handlers turned.

One reached for a weapon.

Grathak only raised his great head and looked at the human who had entered uninvited. The emperor’s red eyes showed no surprise, only a flat, almost bored acknowledgment.

”Barbarian. You should still be in the upper halls listening to soft words about trade routes.”

Kane’s voice came out cold and steady.

”This is the real work while the talks continue.”

Grathak gestured with one massive hand at the platform and the cages.

”This is preparation. The same preparation your southern mutants already demonstrated. Demon essence leaks whether we ignore it or not. I prefer to understand what it makes before it reaches my outer posts in numbers I cannot control. Some of these will die. Some will become useful. All of them give me information the pure-bloods and the river packs still pretend they do not need.”

One of the captives on the platform, a human woman whose veins had already begun to blacken, made a broken sound.

The handler nearest her applied another measured brush of the fluid.

Kane felt the Empress’s Mark flare hard under his skin, the same steady burn it had given him the first time he walked these levels.

”You’re accelerating the corruption on purpose,” Kane said.

”I am learning the speed of it, the patterns, the points where it can be directed or delayed.”

Grathak’s tone remained almost conversational.

”The coalition table is necessary. The days are real enough that even I will not waste them on pride alone. But an empire that walks into that fight without understanding the enemy’s residue is an empire that breaks from the inside. These—” he nodded at the cages and the platform ”—are the price of that understanding. You have killed the finished versions in the forest. I prefer to see the process.”
