Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The journey across the mercury lake was silent. Arthur led the way, his feet barely touching the shimmering surface as he walked on a path of solidified void energy. Behind him, the Gold-Rank party followed in a state of collective shock. They moved like ghosts, their eyes fixed on the back of the man who had just erased a System Auditor from existence.

”Arthur,” Kael finally spoke, his voice barely a whisper. ”That thing... you said you were an Architect. Does that mean you created this Tower? Are you one of the Gods?”

Arthur didn’t stop. He didn’t even turn his head. ”The Gods didn’t create this Tower, Kael. They just found the source code and decided to play at being masters. I was one of the people who actually wrote the lines you’re forced to live by. But that was a long time ago. Right now, I’m just a Porter who’s tired of following a bad script.”

They reached the base of the floating fortress. Up close, the Ivory Citadel was even more imposing. It wasn’t built of stone, but of a white, crystalline substance that pulsed with a rhythmic, golden light. A massive bridge of light extended from the main gate, descending to meet them at the edge of the lake.

”Wait,” Sarah said, grabbing Arthur’s arm. ”Look at the gate.”

Standing at the entrance of the bridge was a man who looked like he had stepped straight out of a legend. He was tall, with flowing golden hair and eyes the color of a summer sky. His armor was a masterpiece of white and gold, and at his hip hung a sword that radiated a blinding, holy light.

”Prince Alaric,” Kael breathed, his voice filled with a mixture of awe and terror. ”The Chosen One of the 11th Floor. The protagonist of the Silver Prophecy.”

Alaric stepped forward, his every movement graceful and filled with an innate authority. He raised his hand, and the holy light from his sword flared, pushing back the shadows that Arthur had brought with him.

”Halt, travelers,” Alaric said, his voice resonant and clear. ”You have crossed the Silver Forest and defeated the Guardians of the Script. But you have done so through darkness and deceit. I am Alaric, the Shield of the Ivory Citadel, and I cannot allow a Void-tainted glitch to enter these holy halls.”

Arthur stopped at the edge of the bridge. He looked at Alaric, not with fear, but with the clinical detachment of a programmer looking at a piece of redundant code.

”The Chosen One,” Arthur muttered, his voice dripping with sarcasm. ”High-Rank charisma, Paladin-class stats, and a backstory filled with tragic nobility. You’re the perfect hero for a mid-level fantasy arc, Alaric. Too bad your role is about to be deleted.”

Alaric’s brow furrowed. ”You speak in riddles, shadow-walker. Your presence is an insult to the light. Leave this place, or I shall be forced to execute the will of the Heavens.”

”The Heavens?” Arthur laughed, a cold, hollow sound that made the Gold-Rank party shiver. ”You mean the servers? The administrators who are currently watching us through the ceiling? They don’t care about you, Alaric. You’re just a tool to keep the players engaged. A shiny toy that’s meant to be broken.”

Alaric drew his sword. The blade, named ’Sun-Reaper’, hummed with an intense, purifying energy. ”Enough! I will hear no more of your blasphemy!”

He charged. In a flash of golden light, Alaric was across the bridge. His sword came down in a massive overhead strike, a move that would have cleaved a mountain in two. The shockwave of the impact sent the mercury lake rippling for miles.

But Arthur wasn’t there.

He had moved with a speed that defied physical logic, appearing behind Alaric in a swirl of black mist.

”Step one: Analyze the Script,” Arthur whispered into the Prince’s ear.

Alaric spun around, his sword glowing even brighter. ”Vanish, demon!”

He unleashed a flurry of strikes, each one faster than the last. The bridge of light was illuminated by explosions of holy energy, but Arthur danced through the carnage like a shadow through a forest. He wasn’t even using his hands; he was simply leaning, twisting, and stepping through the gaps in Alaric’s narrative.

”You’re too predictable,” Arthur said, his voice calm amidst the chaos. ”Every hero has a pattern. You strike, you shout a line about justice, and then you prepare for a finishing move. It’s written into your DNA. You literally cannot do anything else.”

Alaric roared in frustration, his golden hair flying wildly. ”I am the Chosen! The Tower itself empowers me!”

”The Tower empowers the *role*, not the man,” Arthur countered.

He suddenly stopped moving and held up a single finger.

”Command: Script Pause.”

The world froze. The holy light around Alaric’s sword turned grey and static. The Prince himself was locked in mid-air, his face contorted in a scream that had no sound. The Gold-Rank party behind them were like statues, their breath caught in their chests.

Arthur walked around the frozen hero, examining him like a piece of faulty machinery. He reached out and touched the hilt of the Sun-Reaper.

”A beautiful weapon,” Arthur said. ”It’s tied to your soul-signature. As long as you’re the protagonist, no one else can wield it. But what happens if the story decides that you’re the villain?”

Arthur pulled out a small, glowing needle of black light—a ’Narrative Virus’ he had crafted during his time in the Null Zone. He pressed the needle into the back of Alaric’s neck.

”Genre Shift: From Heroic Fantasy to... Dark Betrayal.”

Arthur snapped his fingers.

The world surged back to life. Alaric fell to his knees, but the holy light was gone. Instead, a sickly, purple energy began to leak from his armor. His golden hair turned a dull, ashen grey, and his eyes filled with a dark, suffocating rage.

”What... what have you done to me?” Alaric gasped, his voice now raspy and filled with malice.

”I just updated your character sheet,” Arthur said, looking down at him. ”In the eyes of the Citadel, you’re no longer the protector. You’re the monster that’s been hiding in the basement all along. The ’Chosen One’ has fallen, Alaric. And the story needs a new hero to stop you.”

Suddenly, the gates of the Ivory Citadel swung open. A group of High-Rank knights, the same ones who had served Alaric for years, charged out with their spears leveled.

”Traitor!” the lead knight shouted, his eyes fixed on the corrupted Prince. ”Alaric has succumbed to the Void! Kill him before he destroys the Citadel!”

Alaric looked at his former friends in horror. ”No! It’s a trick! The Porter... he did this!”

But the knights weren’t listening. They fell upon their former leader with a ferocity that was fueled by the very system Arthur had manipulated. Alaric was forced to defend himself, his dark, corrupted sword clashing against the holy weapons of his own men.

Arthur stood back, watching the fratricide with a cold, indifferent gaze.

”Arthur!” Sarah ran up to him, her face filled with horror. ”Why did you do that? He was a hero! He could have helped us!”

”He was an obstacle,” Arthur replied, not looking at her. ”And more importantly, he was a source of ’Narrative Weight’. By turning him into a villain, I’ve created a vacuum in the script. A vacancy for a new protagonist.”

He looked at the Gold-Rank party, his eyes flashing behind his mask.

”And I think it’s time for an ’Extra’ to take the lead.”

Arthur walked toward the open gates of the Citadel, stepping past the dying Prince and the confused knights. The system was already recalibrating. The notifications were flashing in the corner of his vision.

Arthur smiled. The role was his.

”Let’s go,” he said to his team. ”We have a kingdom to steal.”
