Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The makeshift camp was a sea of bandages, low moans, and the flickering light of dying embers. Survivors huddled together, their eyes hollow, looking at Kai as if he were a god who had descended from the heavens. To them, he was the successor of the Hero. To himself, he was a thief holding a stolen crown.

Kai sat on a crate, cleaning the dried blood off Sunbringer with a piece of torn silk. Every stroke of the cloth felt like a lie.

[Current Goal: Maintain the Mask.]

[Progress: 85% - The audience is convinced, but the Script is suspicious.]

What are you looking at? Kai thought, staring at the blue screen. You think I’m just playing along?

Clara approached him, her silver armor clinking softly. She had been crying, her eyes red and swollen, but she carried herself with the dignity of a high-ranking mage. She sat down beside him, her presence heavy with a grief that Kai had caused.

Kai, she said softly. The council of survivors... they want to know what happened in those final moments. They want to know Aidan’s last words.

Kai didn’t look up from the sword. He told me to lead, Clara. He told me that the light must not go out. He was a hero until the very end.

Clara’s voice trembled. He always was a fool for the spotlight. But you... you were just a scout. A background recruit. How did you manage to survive when even his elite squad fell?

Kai finally looked at her. His gaze was cold, calculated. Because I didn’t follow the plan, Clara. Aidan followed the Script. He went where he was told to go, fought how he was told to fight. I? I just did whatever it took to keep breathing.

Clara frowned, confused by his choice of words. The Script? You mean the strategy?

Something like that, Kai muttered.

He stood up, the golden sword humming at his side. He could feel the eyes of the Eternal Audience on him again. They were waiting for a speech. They wanted him to comfort the grieving sister. They wanted ’character development.’

I’m going for a walk, Kai said, turning away.

You can’t just leave! Clara stood up, her voice rising. The people need you. I need you! You’re the only link I have left to my brother. If you have his sword, you have his responsibility.

Kai stopped. He didn’t turn around, but his shadow seemed to lengthen under the moonlight. Responsibility? Clara, do you know what I really want?

Clara paused, taken aback by the sudden change in his tone. What do you mean? You want to defeat the Shadow King, right? To save the world?

Kai laughed, a low, dangerous sound that made the hair on Clara’s neck stand up. Save the world? No. I want to find the one who decided that this world needed saving in the first place. I want to find the one who wrote the lines we’re all forced to speak.

Kai, you’re talking nonsense. You’re exhausted, Clara said, stepping toward him.

I’m more awake than I’ve ever been, Kai said, finally turning to face her.

In his mind, his true goal was burning like a dark sun. He didn’t just want Screen Time. He wanted to reach the ’Editing Room.’ He wanted to find the entities that treated their lives like a cheap soap opera and tear their world down. He wanted to be the last character left standing when the credits rolled.

[Alert: High Narrative Tension detected!]

[Audience Interest: Peaking! ”Is he going rogue already?”]

Suddenly, the air grew cold. A notification snapped Kai back to the present.

[New Quest: The First Trial of the Successor.]

[Objective: Clear the ’Infested Mine’ nearby to secure resources for the camp.]

[Reward: +500 Screen Time, Skill: Script Insight.]

Kai looked at the screen and smirked. The Script was trying to force him back into the ’Hero’ role. It wanted him to go on a noble quest to save the survivors.

Leo, the loyal shield, came running up, panting. Kai! The scouts just reported! The mines are infested with Shadow Crawlers. If we don’t get the crystals from there, the camp’s barrier will fail by dawn!

Kai looked at Leo, then at Clara. They were both looking at him with hope. It was a classic setup. The Hero saves the day, earns more loyalty, and the story continues as planned.

Fine, Kai said, his voice dripping with hidden intent. I’ll go.

I’m coming with you, Clara said, reaching for her staff.

No, Kai snapped. Stay here. Protect the camp. I work better alone.

But the mines are a death trap! Leo protested. Even Aidan wouldn’t go in there without a full squad!

Then it’s a good thing I’m not Aidan, Kai said.

He walked toward the edge of the camp, his mind already racing. He wasn’t going to the mines to save the camp. He was going because the reward was Script Insight. He needed that skill. He needed to see the lines of the world before they were written.

As he disappeared into the darkness of the forest, the blue screen flickered one last time.

[Warning: Deviating from the ’Heroic Path’ will increase the difficulty of the next Scene.]

Let it, Kai thought, his hand tightening on the hilt of Sunbringer. I’m not here to play the hero. I’m here to kill the Author.

He reached the entrance of the mine. It was a gaping maw of darkness, smelling of decay and old magic. He could hear the chattering of the Shadow Crawlers inside.

[Screen Time Remaining: 1002 Hours.]

Time to see if I can break the scene, Kai whispered.

He stepped into the mine, the golden light of his sword the only thing standing between him and the void. But in his heart, he knew the real monsters weren’t the ones in the dark. They were the ones watching from above, popcorn in hand, waiting for him to fail.

And he was going to give them a show they would never forget. A show that would end with their own blood on the floor.
