Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The Great Library of the Immortal Sovereign Sect did not look like a place of learning. As Kai, supported by Clara and Leo, approached the massive obsidian structure, it pulsed with a rhythmic, blue light that mimicked a heartbeat. It was the only building left untouched by the white void, standing like a lonely island in a sea of nothingness.

”The air here... it feels different,” Leo whispered, his eyes darting around the empty plaza. ”It doesn’t smell like incense or old paper. It smells like... ozone.”

”That’s because it’s not a library,” Kai said, his voice a dry rasp. Every step felt like a needle being driven into his joints. His Screen Time was a flickering candle in a hurricane, and he could feel the cold vacuum of the void pressing against his mind. ”It’s a local cache. A backup server for the sector’s metadata. Everything that ever happened in this world—every life, every death, every secret technique—is indexed here.”

They reached the massive bronze doors. There were no guards. The system didn’t need guards when the world itself was being deleted. Kai placed his hand on the cold metal, and instead of pushing, he closed his eyes and tapped a rhythmic sequence onto the surface.

The doors didn’t creak open. They dissolved into a swarm of golden particles, allowing them to pass before reforming behind them.

Inside, the library was infinite. Shelves of glowing jade scrolls stretched upward into a dark, starlit ceiling. But as they walked deeper, the scrolls began to change. The jade turned into glass, and the glass turned into floating screens of scrolling text.

”Kai, look at this one,” Clara said, stopping before a shelf. She reached out to touch a scroll that was flickering between a physical object and a holographic projection. ”It has my name on it.”

Kai stopped, leaning against a pillar for support. ”Don’t touch it, Clara.”

”Why? It says ’The Fate of the Silver-Haired Maiden,’” she said, her voice trembling. ”It says I was supposed to die in the mines. It says my death was the ’catalyst’ for the hero’s awakening.”

”It’s a draft,” Kai said, his eyes hardening. ”A discarded plot point. In the original script, you were just a tragic backstory for a protagonist who doesn’t exist anymore. I stole that role from the world, and in doing so, I gave you a life that wasn’t written.”

Clara turned to him, her blue eyes filled with a mixture of awe and terror. ”Who are you, Kai? Truly? You talk about scripts and roles and metadata as if our lives are just... lines of ink on a page.”

”Worse,” Kai replied. ”Lines of code in a machine. And right now, the machine is trying to delete the lines it doesn’t recognize.”

He moved past her, his focus locked on the center of the library. There, beneath the starlit dome, stood a massive archway made of pure, translucent crystal. It wasn’t connected to any wall; it simply stood in the middle of the room, vibrating with a frequency that made Kai’s teeth ache.

”The Heavenly Gate,” Leo whispered. ”The legends say that those who pass through it become true Immortals and meet the Creators.”

”The legends are half-right,” Kai said. ”It’s a gateway, but it doesn’t lead to heaven. It leads to the command-line interface. The bridge between the simulated reality and the development environment.”

As they approached the gate, a figure stepped out from behind a pillar. It wasn’t an Elder or a guard. It was a young girl, no older than ten, wearing a simple white dress. Her eyes were completely white, devoid of pupils, and her skin had a faint, silver sheen.

”Unauthorized Access Detected,” the girl said. Her voice was a perfect harmony of a thousand different people speaking at once. ”User: Kai. Your presence in the Archive is a violation of the End-User License Agreement.”

”I never signed a contract,” Kai said, drawing his cracked obsidian blade.

”The act of existing within the simulation is a tacit agreement to its terms,” the girl replied. She raised a small, silver hand. ”I am the Archivist. I am the memory of this world. I cannot allow you to access the Source.”

”You’re a firewall,” Kai corrected. ”And a pretty old one at that. You’re running on an outdated kernel, Archivist. I can see the lag in your speech patterns.”

The girl’s expression didn’t change, but the air around her began to distort. Thousands of jade scrolls flew off the shelves, unfurling in mid-air to form a swirling storm of sharp, crystalline paper.

”Clara, Leo, get to the gate!” Kai shouted, shoving them forward. ”I’ll handle the firewall!”

”But Kai, your Screen Time!” Leo yelled, looking at the flickering meter above Kai’s head.

”Go!” Kai roared.

The Archivist flicked her wrist, and the storm of scrolls descended. Each piece of paper was a weapon, imbued with the ’History’ of the world. A scroll describing a mountain’s weight slammed into the floor, shattering the marble. A scroll describing a lightning strike arced across the room, nearly blinding them.

Kai moved with a desperation he had never felt before. He wasn’t just fighting for survival; he was fighting against time itself. He swung his blade, not at the scrolls, but at the air around the girl.

”Architect’s Strike: Memory Leak!”

Every time his blade connected with the Archivist’s aura, a burst of blue sparks erupted. He wasn’t trying to kill her; he was trying to overwhelm her processing capacity. He was forcing her to remember every single detail of the world at once—every blade of grass, every breath of every disciple, every discarded plot point.

The girl’s eyes began to flicker. Her silver skin started to crack, revealing a core of pure, white light. ”Too... much... data... cannot... index...”

”That’s the problem with being a memory,” Kai said, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He was down to 2 hours of Screen Time. ”You can’t choose what to forget.”

He landed a final, crushing blow against the Archivist’s chest. The girl didn’t bleed; she shattered like glass, her form dissolving into a cloud of glowing particles that were immediately sucked into the Heavenly Gate.

The gate began to glow with a blinding, golden light. The vibrations became a roar that shook the entire library.

”Kai! The gate is opening!” Clara shouted from the base of the crystal archway.

Kai stumbled toward them, his vision blurring. The world was starting to turn white at the edges. The quarantine was failing. The Developers were coming.

”Jump,” Kai said, grabbing both of them by the hands.

”Where does it lead?” Leo asked, staring into the golden abyss within the gate.

”To the truth,” Kai said.

They jumped.

The sensation was nothing like the previous transitions. There was no violence, no pain. It was like falling into a pool of warm, liquid light. For a moment, Kai felt everything—he felt the thoughts of the people who had written his world, he felt the cold calculations of the servers, and he felt the heartbeat of a universe that was far larger and more terrifying than he had ever imagined.

Then, the light faded.

Kai opened his eyes. He wasn’t in a forest, a city, or a sect.

He was standing in a massive, dimly lit room filled with rows of glowing glass pods. Inside each pod was a human being, their eyes closed, their bodies connected to thousands of thin, silver wires. At the far end of the room, a giant screen displayed a map of the ’Multiversal Syndication.’

A man in a white lab coat was standing in front of the screen, a tablet in his hand. He turned around, his eyes widening in shock as he saw the three people standing in the middle of the room, covered in blood and dust.

”What the...?” the man whispered. ”How did an Extra get into the Server Room?”

Kai stood up, his obsidian blade still in his hand, though it was now just a piece of cold, dead metal. He looked at the man, then at the rows of sleeping people.

”The show is over,” Kai said, his voice cold and filled with a promise of vengeance. ”I’m here to cancel the contract.”
